So, after being disenfranchised with the AI bullying me with max gear , I was curious enough to check the top 500 in the division ratings. This chap proved interesting: The account only has about 3k matches played on it, and it's hangar is equally hilarious: Seeing that gave me pause. Perhaps Plarium wants F2P to be the grindiest grind through the teirs conceivable: not advancing gear until it's needed for gear achievements. Playing on a smurf, I've found that having nothing but T1 items (R1 mechs) hasn't seen the AI progress in difficulty at all. At most, they stay in the high sub levels of R1. That being said, the new MM is using hangar power, but probably factors in highest possible hangar power as well when dishing out AI. My main account has 5 mechs at low R6, but Killshot and Zephyr basically evaporate before doing much of anything where everything else is fielding EM rifles and railguns, and Ares isn't "tanky" anymore after the "gear heirarchy" update. That being said, cheers to smurfing with T1, R1 paragon until I actually get 900 Autocannon kills 😅🤣

My Pather only needs another 387 million in missle damage to complete its last task. Wanna race turtles?🤣 Lawd. Lancer and Paragon have that task. I haven't gotten a single T2 item yet, but ranking up low en weapons doesn't seem to boost squad power enough to proc T2 MM. I'm playing this new account as slow as slow can be. If there's a way to complete weapon achievements without ranking up, I'm not ranking up. Since Paragon is still R1, there isn't even a need to buy any 6en weapons from T2. No point in racing to higher teirs when it's a guaranteed meat grinder. Especially because teir V consists of 10k+ Coins worth of items to go any further. Paragon and Lancer have the rank up cost for medium mechs instead of their old spreadsheet cost, so unless I missed something, there may be some good news with them adjusting mech rank up prices. Makes lancer cheaper, but paragon more expensive. The costs sunk into what I have purchased feel like a rip, because 90% of what I had resources invested into were nerfed with the gear heirarchy. Playing at the bottom, with basic arse garbage, is turning out to be more fun.

I’m curious, because I’m about to give this a shot. As sporadically as I’m playing these days, I’m wondering if I’ll get more bang for my (no)buck by laying low. So you’re not upgrading anything beyond R1 6* ? This could actually be fun - kind of like the old 6-pack thing in War Robots.
Edit: And what about pilots?
So I disconnected my last hangar and went surfing again with another new one. Two slots only, Lancer and Paragon, and nothing else. I threw shotguns on Lancer, just because. I never used them before, and they only added a couple of power points over the RPG2’s. I won a pilot somewhere for Assault weapons, so I paired him with Paragon. Then I grabbed a cheap CQ pilot for the shotties on Lancer. Still waiting for implants for those. Somewhere along the line I landed a pile of Paragon BP’s, so I upgraded it to 6* and left it there. That’s where I’m gonna leave everything, and then just accumulate resources. It’ll be interesting to compare notes. My SP right now is 232.
Another side note: I’ve seen other hangars with pretty modest SP’s and not very highly upgraded gear, but maxed or nearly maxed pilots and implants. Their SP’s stayed deceivingly low while they still wreaked havoc on the field. I’m gonna give that strategy a shot - not maxing pilots, but just ranking them up a bit and see what happens.
My new smurf id is 60873710, if you want to squad up.

Danny LinguiniThe MM seems to be going off of the highest ranked mech in the current teir unlocked. I made the mistake of getting Juggy, and even as the only Teir2 item, the MM immediately started putting up R2 hangars. Pilots don't seem to matter, just the mech rank in Teir. AI using mechs from previous teirs have them at a rank higher than the current teir. Everything green is R2, AI will have R2 greens, but will occasionally have R3 Lancer(Plasma or RPG) and Paragon(Shotgun or Long Arm). Since there's no going back, I went up to teir 3 to unlock Ares, Shadow and Guardian. Currently running R3 Paragon with shotguns, Arachnos with LA, and Ares with RPGs. Will report back to see what the AI looks like after settling in. Pilots just break whatever they were trying to do with mech/weapon balancing, because the AI will absolutely have top teir pilots and implants,BUT they are at the same rank as their mechs. If the AI/MM stays steady between teir 3 and 4 (blue teir mechs and below), that would be the ideal level range for something like "6 pack league". It'd also be where I'd recommend people stop progressing to grind out the massive amount of resources they'll need for anything else. Right now, just opened up T3 and obtained Ares. It'll be awhile before I open T4.

T3 and 4 seem to share their MM. As soon as I bought Ares, AI Stalker appeared alongside the T3 rare mechs. AI paragon and Lancer now go up to R4, lancer with Gauss, Paragon with LA 12+8. AI, as usual, has access to everything immediately.
So with only a single T3 item in my hangar: T1: Paragon/Lancer R4, R3 weapons T2: R2 or R3, with up to R4 weapons(Ex R3 Jug w R4 rpg6) T3: R3 only, access to all weapons in T3/4 except nade launchers.

I’m liking this approach. The only T2 item I have is SG4. Still running just 2 slots, Lancer and Paragon only - no spares in the shed. Opponents so far are kept to reasonable levels, so far I’m only seeking T2 mechs and weapons. I did rank up both mechs, and all I’ve seen for AI is similarly ranked gear, maybe just a little higher.
On the subject of gear, shotguns on the Lancer are a blast. SG 2+4 on the little guy - he just walks up to the juggies and punches them in the face. Unfortunately for Paragon, there’s very little else available to me for assault weapons - I can get plasma cannons, but I’d be giving up a lot of range. I could dish out the 3 clams for the package that includes pulse cannon 6’s, but then I’d be stuck with the SP-costly Ares in the barn. Also they’re both T3 gear, so who knows how much that would kick up the opposition level. So I’m stuck with auto cannon 4’s on Paragon for now. We’ll see how they go with upgrades and upgraded implants.

So far it seems like obtaining items in a new teir is what ups the MM, not just unlocking the teir. So, even if you got everything in T2, you probably wouldn't see T3 gear until actually buying something from T3. Arachnos seems to be what screws the MM going into T3, as it still counts as owning something from T4, even though it sucks. Even if you don't claim Arachnos from the derby, it will be automatically added to your inventory at the end of the derby if the 30 tasks were met. I've seen an AI running a rank 4 MD. Currently working on filling out T3 gear and stabilizing. I'll have a better idea of what the MM is doing once T4 is properly unlocked instead of psuedo-open because of Arachnos. Current hypothesis: Anything 2+ teirs below the currently available is allowed an extra rank. This makes sense considering the way stats line up with "gear heirarcy". The MM doesn't change for a new teir being unlocked until an item from the new teir is obtained. Lancers and Paragons were all the AI was spawning until the Jug acquisition. I got Ares as soon as I opened T3, then all hell broke loose.

I think if/when I see the arachnos derby, ima just stop playing until it’s over. So all of a sudden my SP jumped to 378, when just yesterday it was 232. I ranked up Lancer and Paragon to R2 and gave Lancer a SG4. At what point as far as mech and/or weapons rank do you figure things start getting nuts? I see a little heavier opposition since bringing these guys up to R2, but I don’t want to push t too far. The game is actually still enjoyable right now. Of course I occasionally meet enemies that the autocannons barely scratch the paint, but they’re not the norm … yet. I’m thinking bring everything up to R2.6, and then just focus on pilots and implants, and then see how MM/AI behaves.

In teir 2, the strongest thing you're going to run into are R3 Paragons with dual shotguns or LA8, Lancers with Plasma/RPG4. Really, I'd say pick up the best weapons in teir (Shotguns/LAs) and pick a single mech. Going into T3 matchmaking is the same whether you get to 18 stars by buying everything in Teir 2, or buying the "bests" and ranking them up until you get to 18 stars. Theoretically, right now, buying everything in T2 at 2-3 stars, is the same as taking Juggernaut, SG8 and LA8 to rank 6.

So basically, if I want to keep the competition level where it is, then stop upgrading/acquiring tier 2 stuff before I hit 18 stars? And probably avoid obtaining higher tier gear by other means (derbies, or God forbid, purchases, etc)? That’s an easy enough metric to monitor. I’m only at 2 stars right now. And I’m actually having fun again. The only time I’ve been 1-shot killed so far was by a guy with Jav 4’s at R4. Everything else I can pretty much dance around to lighten up their hit rate. On a related side note, I’m torn about grabbing plasma cannon 6’s for the Paragon. They do a lot more damage than the autocannons, but I’m losing a lot of maximum range - although they do have the same optimal range. If I go with something other than assault weapons, I’ll need to grab another pilot and associated implants. But there really aren’t a whole lot of other options in T2 that aren’t a step down from my autocannons, believe it or not. I looked at RPG6’s, but they actually do less damage and take longer to reload than the autocannon 4’s. I’m wrestling with it because it’s one if those things that once you get ‘em, there’s no going back. I could just not use them, but then they’re still sitting there making my hangar look badder to MM than it really is. Your thoughts?

" Danny LinguiniRPGs are less magazine damage, but higher dps when live. Since I've been getting insta gibbed by mortar/Javelin,and LA 20 EN paragons, I stopped playing that acct and started yet another smurf. The teir system seems jank because of the Arachnos derby and the "Obtain juggernaut" mission still existing (used to pay for itself, but now jug is 325 coins). If you want it to stay where it is, I'd say stay as far away from hitting the 18 stars for T3 as possible, and skip Arachnos. ----- Mech rank plays a role too, since rank 2 Redox, Gatecrasher, killshot, and panther will occassionally make appearances via players. If the MM is doing what I think it is, each mech rarity gets +1 rank over it's successor. Best way I can put it, is that it's rigged in a way where the MM treats a 6.7 green border mech like a 4.7 Purple border mech: Eg. 6.7 Puma's stats are 4.7 Panther stats with a worse ability. Zephyr and redeemer become available at T5, at rank 4, any remaining AI paragons running around will likely be R5-6 at that point. More likely Paragon stops showing up altogether at that point though. That makes the upside of ranking up crap mechs, that they'll be carrying heavier firepower than their appropriate rarity counterparts in the MM.

Redfiend Yep, that’s the plan - don’t hit 18 stars. Otherwise, I wrestled with the plasma cannons, and I won. Or lost, not sure which yet. I took a shot and grabbed ‘em. I know in the *real* world they’re relatively garbage, but I’m planning on avoiding the world that Plarium wants me to live in at all costs. For now they’re totally worth it - damage at 45m and even a bit beyond more than makes up for the shorter max range. Though the projectile speed is slower than a garden slug, so not so good against faster mechs beyond close range. They kicked my stars up from 2 to 4, but I’m not planning on acquiring any more new gear at this point, and all upgrades will stop at 16 stars … though I’ll be watching the quality of reds very closely if I see the star count going up. I already got clobbered thanks to winning too many games due to the lobotomized AI, but I figured that was coming sooner or later. Even though I trounced the human on the other side with more than double my SP. So what’s your plan for the new smurf account?

Danny LinguiniThe plan is sticking to 2 slots with paragon and Lancer and seeing how far I can push them before the game makes fighting T2 items mandatory. The AI is still only spawning R1 lancers and paragons while I'm at Rank 2 Lancer(Rpg2+4) and Rank 2 Paragon(Autos) with weapons also at R2. It was said advancing gear from previous teirs has no effect on teir progression. If the MM is doing what I think it is, hitting Rank 3 with Paragon or Lancer will push me into the T2 MM bracket, even if I still have 0/18 stars in T2. If ranking up lower teir gear really doesn't matter at all, then I should theoretically still be fighting garbage even if I get Paragon and Lancer to higher ranks, as long as I don't actually get anything from T2. If the second one is true, it'll be hilarious.

I’m kinda going that same route, except I have a couple of T2 weapons. I am seeing a lot of T2 gear, and a few T3’s (mainly Ares’s), but it looks like they’re all R2. So far I can handle most of them, except for jav’s - I’ve got nothing for them. But that’s the problem you run into as you rank up your mechs if you want to stick with lower tier weapons - you’re gonna have a whole lot more energy capacity than weapons to fill it. But I guess it won’t matter - you can stand there blasting your autocannons all day, because if the theory holds true, your mechs will have more HP than the reds can possibly put a dent in. Gonna be interesting to see how this goes.

Gonna be interesting to see how this goes. The Ares are probably players, there are plenty of people out there with more cash than sense, and it's cheap for what it is. Right after the last post I started seeing MDs and Juggernauts, but only on 2 of the enemy hangars (Killed all mechs: 12 total). Just going to upgrade/rank T1 weapons(since coins are going to be a super slow crawl) to see what happens. The post that sparked this thread, the MM only spawned R1 gear so long as Lancer and Paragon remained R1, even though the RPG2 and Autocannons they were wielding were halfway through R3, and the basic rocket/assault pilots were R4. No matter the case, this will probably be the last go round I give this game unless I miraculously gain the ability to whale. They've basically cracked down on every decent way to get coins without cash. Vault blitz potentially being gutted makes it even worse. Idk what the hell scape was talking about when he said just playing regularly can earn someone 4k-ish coins a month. Prices were always ridiculous, the currency being this tight in game, even though MORE THAN HALF OF THE ITEMS IN THE GAME ARE ONLY SOLD FOR REAL MONEY, with 2-3 months of grinding for any other single piece of high end gear, altogether, completely ridiculous.

Unfortunate that the money grab is by far the highest priority over making the game fun, more so now than ever before, and they don’t even make a secret about it. Interesting strategy they have working, though. They push and push hard on new and more powerful gear, which sends you down a very deep rabbit hole trying to keep up with the correspondingly more challenging opposition. If you can avoid that desire to keep up with the Joneses, at least by what I’m seeing these past few days, you can avoid that vicious cycle by just sticking with the lowest level gear.
BTW, I really appreciate your insight and observations on how the game operates and manipulates - short of seeing the developers’ actual design specs, it’s a good set of guidelines for what to avoid doing, which is basically everything they’re trying to encourage you to do.

Bugger - I just realized I’m 5 days into the 7-day Arachnos derby. I’m only 10 tasks away from getting that horrible thing. I want those next two piles of credits on the way up, but then I’m gonna have to stop playing until that godforsaken thing is over.
So right now, I’m hitting players with 4-slot hangars, but none of their stuff is ranked up very high. A few R2 mechs, but mostly R1’s, but a lot more R2 weapons. Interesting. Until I win too many games, then it throws the aggressive AI’s at me until I lose a few, and then it’s back to ‘normal’. I’m going to keep everything at R2, no higher than level 6, and just upgrade the pilots for a bit. (Though it’s going to be very tempting to rank up Lancer just one more time so he can carry two SG4’s.) Then see how long the games stay like this.

The players probably haven't hit 18 stars for T2 yet, which makes you their low end fodder. For arachnos: just claim your free chests and 10 coins for 2000 credits. The derby lasts a day longer than when day 7 tasks open up. The Juggernaut task is legacy stupidity, but if they leave the Arachnos derby up after everyone gets gear hub, it's 100% bait. Right now it's still there because they're still doing group A/B with new accounts, where some newbies are still getting the old progress path. Getting KOd by T4 weapons and Gauss stalker without any real way to retaliate really feels bad. The highest T2 gear I've seen the AI run are R3 lancer(shotguns, RPGs, Plasma) and R3 Paragon(Shotguns/Long Arms). Don't know if that's kosher for players to run, or if it's the AI "pushing" players to upgrade. The new smurf(R1 lancer and Paragon only) that only spawns R1 lancer and Paragon as AI, gets punished by purple teir pilots(Nova/Yeti) with Gold implants when I win too consistently.

I don’t know if I crossed another secret threshold, or if I was just winning too much, but last night they really cranked up the AI, and I had a game against a human who wiped out everything with a Redeemer a tier 5 mech!). He had just one R2 Jav4, but he was 1-shotting everything he could lock onto. I’d say that’s a bit OP for tier 2. I wasted that whole game chasing him around with Lancer, but every time I got in range, he’d hit that magic button and disappear to from whence he came, and he eventually nailed me. That was the only unusual mech I’ve seen, otherwise it’s a crap-ton of slingshots and juggies all over the place. I don’t have anything over R2, weps or mechs, but I do have two pilots at R4. Don’t know if that means anything.
Anyway, I’m on a self-imposed 2-day break now. Logging in to collect whatever freebies I can, but I got the last of the credits in the arachnos derby, and I absolutely do not want that bucket of bolts in my hangar. So I’m done now until midnight tomorrow. Maybe if I’m lucky I’ll snag a couple of plasma cannon implants between now and then, because of course they’re rare as hen’s teeth now because I need them.
I’m thinking of tempting fate and ranking up the Lancer to R3 (he’s at R2.6 right now) so I can mount the second Shottie 4. I’m hoping that by itself doesn’t tip the scales and let loose the nasty aggressive AI and higher-powered hoomans. I really don’t want to go down that road, because that usually means the end of the fun. But I’m liking these shotties a lot more than I thought I would.

Fun fact: There are a series of predetermined "sales" for every new account. They're the ones that pop up in daily deals, and I do not know how many of them Paylarium has queued up for new players. Think: Ares+ Pulse6 Arc 6 with the first "Battle o thon" event having a task specifically for arc 6 R3 Guardian w R2 Voltaic RPG8 R3 Shadow w SG4 R4 Zephyr w R2 MR6 On top of the "specialization spree" R2 mech that goes on sale every week. The game will intentionally pair F2P with the players that buy those offers, while tilting the AI in the paid player's favor. So, if you see a high teir mech in daily deals for $2-3, expect at least one encounter during the sale. Also, there DOES seem to be something going on with people dropping their SP to tank the MM. How and how far that goes, I don't know. Depending on the amount of games their account has on it, could be either or. The "Server maintenance" may also be creating jank as they fumble with background code.

I just made a Smurf account to try out some of what y'all are playing now and relive some of the early fun. Somehow I don't think I got that tier system in this account. It looks like the same old. So I will re-read through these posts and go from there. Any suggestions welcome. I got Ares from Plarium right at the start so I added rpg6s and it rocks so far. ;-)

I just made a Smurf account to try out some of what y'all are playing now and relive some of the early fun. Somehow I don't think I got that tier system in this account. It looks like the same old. So I will re-read through these posts and go from there. Any suggestions welcome. I got Ares from Plarium right at the start so I added rpg6s and it rocks so far. ;-) Gear hub is still A/B grouping. You got the original progress path, so won't be seeing it until the official release. since they said the beginning of August, I'm willing to bet it'll be when Scorpius/Chain12 crates end.

I’m wondering if the tier system has always been in play behind the scenes as far as matchmaking, or if it’s something new, or if there’s something else altogether going on in their devious little minds. I got Lancer, Ares and that big blue tank mech all when I first ran the new account. So I wasn't able to see if there was a difference with Ares.

I got Lancer, Ares and that big blue tank mech all when I first ran the new account. So I wasn't able to see if there was a difference with Ares. I didn’t get any of those, and I haven’t completed any tasks that would give me any other mechs. I have only Lancer with shotguns, and Paragon with plasma cannons, and that’s all I’m running on this account. So far the competition is staying pretty steady, mostly T2 mechs and weapons, mostly at R2, but a few at R3. I did see a couple of tier 5 mechs, but that’s pretty infrequent. The SP’s, though, they’re all in the 800’s and higher with four slots filled, I had a couple of reds over 1000, usually after a winning streak, which pretty much wipe everything else off the board; otherwise I’m mostly the top mech. Interesting note, though it’s probably been mentioned here before - ranking up T2 gear adds T2 stars, just like buying new T2 gear. Upgrading Lancer to R3 didn’t change anything, but bringing the shotguns to R2 increased my stars from 4 to 6. So I’m probably going to keep all those weapons at R3. Maybe at some point I’ll grab a T2 mech to replace Paragon, but that won’t be any time soon. More likely I’ll just get and upgrade better pilots and implants. I just dumped all my hard-earned a-coins on Major for Paragon, so the upgrade process starts all over again.

So yeah weapons mean something as to what level opposition you get. I have longarm8 on Juggernaut and two Rpg 6s on Ares. SP is 623.

I'm still just going to stick to achievement hunting before leaving T1.
The 900 auto cannon kills with Paragon can't be completed any other way lol
Something I did notice, is that the upgraded mech achievements seem to make a passive suggestion for how far each mech should be ranked up before being replaced.
The "Master engineer" achievement varies from mech to mech.
I'm not sure if rank ups count as upgrades for this, or just the regular level upgrades. If it is a passive measuring stick, it's pretty much saying dump Commons/uncommon/rare mechs around Rank 4, dump purple borders at T5, and only bother with R6 on Gold border mechs.
I'm playing the slow and steady, literally just ranking up T1 weapons to 5.7 before even thinking about ranking up mechs.
Trying to buy any kind of power to move forward just seems like the slippery slope the bean counters want.
Item sales are R2, R3 at the neon shop, and look "decent", but only for those that don't know ranking up from 3 to 6 is still $40-50 worth of Acoins per item. The swathe of new purple/gold border gear has also considerably slowed down blueprint accumulation.
The BP problem is the biggest issue, but that's not saying much when credits/coins are just as bad.
They need to make it so BPs stop dropping once a player owns enough to max an item.

Trying to buy any kind of power to move forward just seems like the slippery slope the bean counters want. This is their entire money-grabbing strategy in a nutshell. The slippery slope that once you start down it, there’s no getting off without quitting and starting over. Or just quitting.
