I've been watching a lot of War Robots videos lately and noticed the term clip is frequently miss used. This has been a long time pet peeve of mine. It's like calling a fuel injector, a carburetor.

LOL I got used to this a long time ago, but it IS nice to see it spoken of and the difference to be pointed out... just don't expect it to make a difference with common usage!

Well if you wanted to get technical, A belt fed machine gun, which I believe the Punishers, Tempest and molot fall into use neither a clip or Magazine. It would be referred to as a "feed strip" or "ammo tray". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belt_(firearms)

upon further reading on the old Wiki War Robots page, they state that the Punisher is essentially a Gatling Gun. Doing research on them, they refer to the feed mechanism for that type of weapon type as a "hopper". For what its worth, I share your frustrations on the whole "magazine/clip" thing. That type of terminology is usually limited to gun buffs.

GuitarGuy True. However, both the punishers and molots look an awful lot like drum mags. The hopper would be for holding the belts, but the visual of the weapons look more like drum mags... to me anyway

Agreed, watching them fall off when you reload would make one think its a drum Magazine. of course it is video games so who knows if there "design" would actually be functional. The closest thing in real life I could relate it to would be the M134D electric gatling gun which is belt fed.

Definitely. Debating beyond that would be pointless.

If I say 'I emptied a full clip' in referencing the unloading of a full salvo, do you know what I'm talking about? I think yes, most people would get it. Like most other people here, I'm not a RL weapons expert. So ima keep calling it a clip. Soz.

Ever heard the old saying " the whole 9 yards"? Kind of interesting, it comes from fighter pilots. Best I understand the 50 cal. machine guns on there planes had a feed tray that could hold 9 yards of ammunition. when talking about battles with there fellow pilots it was the slang way of saying " i emptied the whole "clip" into em. :-) See what I did there? lol

Ever heard the old saying " the whole 9 yards"? Kind of interesting, it comes from fighter pilots. Point of fact: it's actually unclear whether that's true. It's also entirely possible that the phrase originated with the Scottish and kilt-making. The mess of etymology is kind of depressing because the possible originations are all equally interesting but only one can be right.

The "Magazine" is the box the "Clip" comes in, so to speak.
You reload a weapon with a "Magazine" that holds the "Clip."
"Emptying a clip into a target," is an accurate definition.
"Reloading a Clip/Magazine," is not.

Looks like a Belt-feed Drum Mag to me. Kinda looks like the A-10 Warthogs gun

I know the Aero M134's we had in the turret had a separately powered and driven part on the side of the gun called the Feeder/Delinker, as well as another feed motor on top of the ammo bin to help push linked rounds into the flexible linkage or "belt". The whole subsystem was called the Amunition Handling System. Lord knows, it takes some mojo to make something feed a belt of 4,000rds of 7.62 NATO into a 6,000RPM gun. Lotta fun to fire, but a pain to break out 40 belts from dunage and link...or policing the brass & links... Picks for ref;

"Reloading a Clip/Magazine," is not. Not quite. The magazine feeds rounds directly into the firing chamber. Clips are used to load magazines. The few guns that seem to actually load using clips (for instance, the M1 Garand) actually use the clip to load an internal magazine. Others, like the M16, use clips to rapidly (although I should use the term lightly in any sense of not causing damage to either the clip or mag) fill a magazine. Magazines often have heavy springs to shove the bullets out, and so loading directly, especially with larger or heavier rounds, can sometimes be a literal pain in the thumb. To "empty a clip" is really more a reflection of volume, not the actual mechanics since a clip doesn't actually have any mechanism other than your fingers to move bullets from itself and into the firing chamber. Clips don't go in the magazines; they help you load the *bullets* into the magazines. </geekrant>

A Magazine is nothing more than a 'box for the bullets of the weapon. The only reason magazines are used is expediency and convenience. The 'Clip is/are the rounds themselves. A weapon can still load a Clip manually, it just takes patience and a good cover to keep yourself alive in a firefight lol

An individual bullet is a round or a cartridge, but not a clip. Clips hold multiple rounds for loading into the magazine. And far from being a mere box, a functional magazine is a crucial part of the operation of the weapon. A magazine failure prevents the gun from firing completely (or locking open when the magazine is depleted), even if the outside is all intact.

But it's just a spring loaded mechanism that 'pops' the bullet in the chamber. Modern weapons are built around this functionality but still allow for manual reload(s) of individual rounds. A Clip is only a bunch of bullets 'clipped' together for faster magazine loading.

Uh, just no. You have it backwards. No, I don't .. Are you refering to the follower? Or the spring? Those are pretty much the only parts inside magazines.

Are you refering to the follower? Or the spring? Those are pretty much the only parts inside magazines. I was simply saying, that Clips are a collection of rounds. You fire the rounds that are of the Clip - you have depleted the collection of rounds in the Clip. Therefore, "Emptying a Clip into a target," is accurate.

The point was that NONE of the weapons in this game have a clip. Wish there was a facepalm emoji. Read Mahlakai's post above, he explained it well. Again this is symantics, popular terminology vs fact.
