In my hangar thread I've sort of brought this up, but I figure I'd focus this here.
Ive been making less gold lately because damage is starting to get harder to come by, so I'm thinking I might want to spend gold to make gold, a better weapon to get my damage numbers up might put me in a better spot to land more gold.
When I win I'm in the 3 or 4 spot and that's peanuts in gold payout.... When I lose I'm always 1-2 in damage, kills and beacons so when I do good I lose, when I'm lacking I'm winning, I'd like to get that reversed by getting better damage per match.
so am I right in thinking I need to spend gold to get better stuff to make more gold to get better stuff to play better to get more gold???

It's pointless. Even if you buy say Orkans or a Galahad which will in the short term earn you gold, the MM will eventual move you up to the point where you will stop earning gold consistently.
My recommendation is switch your hangar out to concentrate on beacon capping which should net you a more consistent 5 gold on a good proportion of your wins.

Yup, if you need gold, Beacon running hangers are more reliable in terms of time spent to gold earned (IE farming)

Buying an orkan is fine. So is remaining dedicated to the 5th slot. Remember, its enjoyment, not a job, so if the grind starts feeling unfun, switch it up

I could level up my dusty Cossack, 「fake pee place」 a tulumba or taran and go cap some beacons on the cheap.... sure would beat lumbering along in a heavy trying to turn beacons when nobody else wants to

5th slot gives you more options to respond to battlefield conditions, more total hp and more total damage output. Its worth the grind if you can handle it. Esp with an upcoming event which will likely add at least some gold.
I made a big mistake buying 5th slot first,I have upgraded a lot of temp weapons and bots to decent level that I am replacing 1 by 1 now. Eg, I am upgrading my 7/7/8 Trident Carnage 3 months after I got my 5th slot (yes, very low level), and I have to stop upgrade my Plasmahad to upgrade my Carnage. I also stop upgraded my DB Griffin to upgrade my Plasmahad, or I stop upgrade my PDB Griffin to upgrade my DB Griffin. The worst thing, I upgraded most things I don't need for 2-3 months because I bought 5th slot first. Don't get 5th slot first, except if you want to replace most of your decent level weapons and bots to level 1 Au bots and weapons 1 by 1 for months. Spend another 2-3 months upgrade them to match the items level you replaced. Especially, We should enjoy the game by killing the red while saving for 5k, not the other way around. I am not a pro, but I know level of weapons or bots is the most critical stats to tell the strength of your hanger.
I am a proponent of "5th slot first" but if you want to get 2x ork first, think that is completely understandable. Orks add a lot of value, and good to get familiar with them earlier on. However, gettings orks doesn't mean you'll win more Au though. If Au rewards is what you're prioritizing, suggest you load out more beacon cappers. Perhaps a few stalkers? Grabbing beacons is the best way to improve your chances for a win.
Getting your 5th slot, on the other hand, means you will instantaneously have more capacity and last longer in battles. Even if you have nothing else but your stock destrier to put there, that's 44k more HP at your disposal, and in those battles when you just have to hold on just 10 more seconds for the win, you'll be glad to have that 5th slot.
When there's a match that starts out strong for blue team and we hold advantage on beacon bar and think it's a win... but 6 mins into the game your team starts meching out, and ends in a loss (I'm sure many have experienced this), often it's because teammates had 3-4 bot hangars.

Agree that upgrading hangar won't improve gold intake for long, you'll go to higher league (which actually might have happened to you now). The focus on beacons is IMO the best advice, I'd also advise squadding as it may bring additional 9 gold per day.
You may also calculate how much gold you get from games. Just realize there's 14 gold distributed (save squads) per game, on average you lose 50 %. So, if you earn something like 11-12 gold per 10 games, it's just average.
Just to the caption of your post: Orkans + Gareth or Galahad before 5th slot. Though not prevalent opinion, I'm an advocate of "first gold weps + bots before 5th slot". Both DB setup both Galahad are IMO both more fun both more effective than one more silver bot in silver hangar. The post I've quoted also adds to this - better to have upgraded Galahad than a bot you'll phase out on Gal's purchase.

5th slot is not the problem. Upgrading the wrong weapons is.
With 4 robots, use 2xplasma Griffin, Pinata Tulu Griffin and Thunder Pinata Leo. Many TT players run 2 Griffins, so upgrading two Griffins, some plasma weapons and a pair of Pinatas is safe. So is upgrading the Thunder on the Leo (for a Thunder Orkan Lance much later).
You can get a pair of Orkans before the 5th slot if you really really really want those Orkans, but you can't justify this by claiming that you have nothing to upgrade.
6pack is easily the best way to enjoy War Robots nowadays. Balanced games & very good players. Come join our league or fight nights at Discord discord.gg/vEup3h
If you have some older bots like the Lance, Fury, Carnage, Galahad or Rhino at level 6 or below, chances are that you can equip a very good 6pack hangar. Otherwise just grab a Tulu/Pin or Punisher Griffin, a Punisher/Thunder Leo or Natasha. Virtually no time or silver required. Check out the legal gear at discord.gg/ry6V5z

You won't have enough WSP at the early stage to build 2 PDB Griffin. If I remember correctly, I had 1 PDB Griffin, 1 RBD Griffin, 1 molots or Punisher Griffin, 1 Magnum/Thunder Nats, 1 Pinata/thunder Leo, 1 Piñata Patton (6 bots swapping around) before I got my 5th slot. After 2-3 months, I am running PDB Griffin, DB Griffins, Plasmahad, Stalker and Tridents Carnage. The only upgraded things that didn't replaced are 2 Tarans, 4 Magnums and 2 Piñata. All the rest of the upgraded weapons or bots in my inventory.
The old Matching system favour you upgrade weapons at least 2 level above your bot, so I didn't upgrade my 3 Griffins at all. I even had 7 piñata for Thunder/Piñata Leo and Piñata Patton.
Thats why I suggest other people should buy some Au weapons or bots that worth to upgrade before saving for 5k Au. Especially if the weapons or bots are good for both early and for later stages, start the upgrade as early as possible. If I start all over again, I will buy Gareth, 2 Orkans and Galahad before 5 slot. I will have 10/10 or 10/11 hanger, not 7/7 to 9/9 hanger I am having. I will even earn more gold reward if I bought Gareth at early stage. (I was tortured by Gareth and Galahad)

Du weißt, dass das hier ein englisch sprachiges Forum ist?
I am actually of the opinion that orks don't have that much use at the point in the game where you need a 5th slot.
They are useful sure, but at a point where there are fewer shield bots i do not see the point
I am not playing lower league now, so I don't know. But 4-5 months ago when I was lower level, I was tortured by shield bot. Sometimes I even bring Piñata Patton as well as my Piñata/Thunder Leo to at least see their hp drop. I even thought it was bug when I hit them with Piñata but the hp didn't drop (I know Gareth and Galahad can backpaddle my Piñata now). Will 9/9 Plasmahad last twice longer than 8/8 PDB Griffin? Most likely if there aren't many Tridents. 5th slot is only crucial when you have a very close game, but still, some Au bots can last 1.5 to 2 times longer in the battlefield.

All I know is, I just got through with a mini rant on an unrelated thread where I shared my recent experience with Blues only having 4 slot hangars (except for me) and Reds having most or all players with 5 slots. The majority of the Levels were higher on those 4 slot hangars, but guess who won? Well, since it was a rant... I bet you can figure it out. Get that 5th. ASAP. It matters.
For transparency I run 8/9 averaged hangar. Yes, I have some Au weapons and bots, but I have a 5 slot hangar. I see 4 slotters with Lances, Galahads, Aphids, Gekkos, etc., and not just one bot, but the whole dang hangar. With bots and weapons up to 10 - 11. We would have won at least 2 of those matches had my team not meched out early. In the last 2 mins we went from having a beacon bar that was 3/4 full with a Red bar around 1/4 full to me being the only one left v 6 Reds that had 3 Garys running around turning beacons there at the end. I'd like to say I just ran around and led them on a merry chase till time ran out and we still won, but no... 4 on 1 in Shenz, they caught me. Ugh.

Don't under estimate levels on the weapons and bot, my 9/9 PDB can only take 40-50% hp of 11/12 PDB Griffin 1 v 1 before I was killed. Just few days ago I checked the after match report.

I am 9/9 about a quarter the way to 10/10. I mech out a good percentage of matches. I much prefer to mech out in the 9th minute with 5 slots than the 7th minute with 4. If I have left an advantage that the reds can not correct in one minute we will win.
4 gold bots, gold weapons on the fifth. Doesn't matter at all. The 5th slot is more important.

What makes you think I underestimate anything... did you not see the levels of the weapons I use? I made the case in a thread yesterday that level 9 weapons are good against 12s you just have to shoot a little more. That wasn't the point. The point is that you have less bots. So, when you do die, that is 1/4 of your hangar that is gone. When a 5 slot hangar loses a bot, they lose 1/5 of their fighting ability. The team with more bots, if skill and weapons are somewhat equal, will win. The MM has been better at matching levels and skill lately, for me at least, so this becomes the biggest factor.

You are not quarter way to 10/10 if you buy few Au weapons and bots before 5th slot, you most likely quarter way to 10/11. In addition, you also have 5th slot.
You won't have enough WSP at the early stage to build 2 PDB Griffin.
Obviously. And depending on how much the OP plays, silver is also a bottleneck. But 2 PDB Griffins it's a fairly short term goal. As long as you have workshop level below 15 you'll get some bonus WSPs, so maybe 700-800 a day?
I mean, it's always a tradeoff. You could in theory design your target hangar, and upgrade only what's there. If you use Pinatas/Tulus/Thunder as placeholder (as they all come at level 5), you could then get Orkans, level to 12, get Aphids, level to 12, get a Lance, level to 12, while you're still running a level 6/5 Pinata Thunder Leo in one spot. Then OTOH you could check what has a good time/price ratio. For example, if I run a Thunder Pinata Leo, I wouldn't think twice to upgrade the Pinatas to level 6. That's a day of upgrade time, not more, even if you never use those Pinatas again. Also, a Natty is a great Trident platform until you have the Carnage or Fury to go along with them, and you can upgrade Natty to level 9 in just over 3 days and 5 million silver.
I'd figure if you use a 5-robot hangar and get everything to level 7, you'll "lose" about 20 days of upgrade time on stuff that you you'll replace later on. But hey, I actually enjoy having some stuff in my storage. Running the occasional Aphid Stalker or a Hydra Fujin is fun
But even if you don't want to spend a minute on stuff that won't be in your top hangar later, it's doable without having too weird hangars. Say you have identified 2 Griffins and the Thunder as endgame worthy, upgrading those to level 8 will already take 8 days. A pair of Pinatas, 4 more days. After 12 days you'll have enough WSP points to buy a Taran and upgrade this, and then another Taran and upgrade it too. Then get stuff to level 9 while you collect WSPs for the first pair of Mags. Upgrading two Griffins, a Thunder, a pair of Pinatas, two Tarans and two Mags to level 9 takes 36 days, in which time you'll have collected enough WSPs to get the second pair of Tarans and Mags.

I see your point, I upgraded all my weapons and bots equally (weapons 2-3 level evenly higher than my bots). I have wasted a lot of time upgrade the things I am not using now.
But only upgrade PDB Griffin will make your whole hanger weaker (higher level need more time to upgrade), which means less likely you going to earn Au reward.
