My first post on a gaming website... hello all.
After a year or more of my 12-year old son playing this game on my cell phone & Google account, he finally got his own phone (and gmail) and created his own profile for War Robots.
Now that he’s at about level 20 on that account, he’s “given me” the old one and wants to play one-on-one against me. I’ve spent about 2 weeks now playing the game, and have gotten the hang of the game-play itself, but my son is still kicking my @$$ regularly. What I DON’T have any clue on is what robots/weapons are good, better, best and what should be upgraded and what should just be thrown away. I’m sure I could find hours and hours of reading on this, but just don’t have that kind of time to dedicate. Thus I come to "the forum" for insight.
I’m considering putting $50 real dollars into the game just to try and make a better stable of robots so I can surprise my son if/when we play again. Son is around the same level as what he left me with (below). BUT… he only has 4 hanger slots as opposed to the 5 in my account.
Would anyone be willing to take a look at the below list of “what I’ve got” and give me suggestions on:
1. What can/should I throw away/sell for Silver?
2. Does current hanger make best use of what I’ve got? If not, what robots should be replaced?
3. Do hanger robots have best weapons out of inventory I’ve got? If not what should be replaced where?
4. Top 5 things I should be trying to upgrade.
5. If I were to sink $50 real dollars into this game, what should I use it towards?

is he allowed to make any in-game purchases? Not likely. He doesn't have CC to use. I could do it for him if I were feeling generous, but right now it's all about me. :-) Hes doing just fine beating me w/out spending real $$

At your current level, it's 90% learning how to use what you have, and learning what suits your playstyle. That said, a few general suggestions:
1) Upgrade your main hangar Bots and Weapons to level 6. It fairly fast and cheap to do, and is a decent level to test drive different ideas. 2) Avoid Artillery. Zenits and Noricums look cool on paper, but are simply not effective weapons. 3) Griffins, Griffins, Griffins Easily the most versatile Bot in the game and effective into Expert League or higher in skilled hands. So many good builds: RDB "Russian Death Button" (Tulumbas/Pin) Gunboat (Molot T/Molot) Leadhose (Punisher T/Punisher) DB "Death Button" (Orkan/Pinata) PDB "Plasma Death Button" (Taran/Magnum) Stuka (Orkan/Aphid) Bomber (Vortex/Aphid) Shotgun (Storm/Gust) 4) Mobility. Have at least 1, ideally 2 or more, mobile Bots in your hangar. Heavy firepower is useless if you can't get into the action in time.
Weapons: Light: Gust -- possibly the best close-range weapon in the game Punisher -- versatile, works well in combination with almost any other weapon Magnums -- great sustained firepower, no reload time.
Medium: Scourge -- excellent all-purpose weapon Orkan -- deadly at 300m or less, probably the most effective all-around weapon Taran -- better range than Orkan, great against Bots with Energy Shields Storm -- stick it up your enemy's nose and watch him Go Away. Best inside 150m
Heavy: Thunder -- less popular in higher leagues but still very good at close range Ember -- best weapon vs any Bot with any kind of shield Dragoon -- powerful Mid-range weapon Zeus -- less damage than Dragoon, but much cheaper, and auto-aim
Weapon combos: most people prefer to stack a Bot with weapons of similar type and range (see Griffin builds I listed). There are a few select "FrankenBot" builds that are effective, but be careful.
Hope that helps; play around for a bit, then come back with more specific questions later.

Oh, and Re: in-game purchase. Wait until you know exactly what you want before outting any real money on anything. Maybe spend a bit on a nice Au deal (varies with region, but I sometimes buy 600 Au for $1.19, with a bonus 500 Au from a "make any purchase" task )

Get yourself and your youngling into the test server on the weekends. *Caveat*:Do pix a solid and actually fill out the feedback form. TS allows for incredible flexibility in terms of experimentation. You get to run stuff only seen in the upper tier leagues plus the shiney new whale weapons f2p drools for and loath. Or if you want to be ahead of the game, build your current hangar and run it against all the meta bots to get a sense of how you would fair against them on the live server. Adjust accordingly after lessons learned and you end up learning what works and what doesn't and most importantly what you can do to prepare for shifts in the meta well before they hit the live server. Kamikaze gave you great information. For what you have, I'd probably swap the shocktrain on the Boa with the orkan in your inventory. I'd replace Natasha with Stalker(loaded with Gusts preferably) and replace Vityaz with Golem and go Avenger(heavy punisher, bought outright for $20) Punisher as the loadout. As you gain more experience, you may move away from these builds but for now, that's what I'd do with what you have. Just my opinion.

My advice:
Griffin is fine. That weapons build gives you good mid range.
Boa is good but Leo is better. He comes with Thunder and Pinatas but I used to like Thunder and Punishers.
That Fujin gives decent midrange damage but it dies too easily. Consider throwing a different bot in there.
Zenits and Noricums don't do much damage. Consider putting Thunders and Pinatas on the Natasha for short range destruction.
I'm not a fan of the Vitaz but maybe it works for you.
You need speed in your hanger. Give Gareth or Stalker a chance. Gusts work well on Stalker while Gareth with Orkan and Pinata makes for a great ambusher.
You could also put Tarans and Magnum on the Gareth. You don't currently have any Tarans. You need some.
A final piece of advice: Open chests. I have two Lancelots from Silver chests and last month I got two Furies from Gold chests.

I guess you can also keep the Fujin at first. Punisher Galahad. And if it were me, i would put that one Shocktrain on Cossack. Just to troll around and get beacons until you get something decent Get some plasma weapons. Bulgasari would be good but a bit trickier to operate. Kumiho is great fun, but also tricky to operate well. Mercury and Inquisitor are good. Latest great bot is Pursuer with Gusts/Halo. If you want to spend money, spend it on this.

Invite him to a custom match and both pick Hangar X (with the Pixonic logo). You can go one on one and have the same load outs.

Je Hangar X is great for this and trying stuff out.
And about the leveling. As said by others, don't level anything past 6. When you are comfortable and still interested you may want to go to 9. Medium weapons and newer stuff first. Fast bots are also a somewhat good idea to get to 9. Then bots get their max speed.

My advice: go to the tips and tricks section and work on your fundamentals. Corner shooting and engaging at the right time will mean the difference in your contest with junior. Engaging at the right time example: wait for him to use his special before you. Whether it's a griffin/rog jump or a ground/jump descent/stealth always wait for red to use their's first. Just be covered and prepared to use yours cuz you'll get toasted if u wait too long. You could always join a clan that uses comms. A few matches with comms speeds the learning curve significantly.

galahad is a fun bot to play, and may carry you high up through the leagues. you can consider a short-mid range energy build for this bot, for example scourge an two magnums.
griffins... your hangar may benefitfrom a second griffin, for example a leadhouse, all punishers, build. punishers are very effective at less than 300m. start firing at long range, and use its jump ability to get closer and unleadh hell on reds
you can work a second orkan, and couple it with pinatas or aphids, on a third griffin. orkan builds have short range, but very high burst damage. you can use the jump ability for a flyby red bots unleash the load, and end up under a cover. do this a few times, and your scores will skyrocket.
thunder is a nerfed weapon, but can be utilized efficiently on a strider along with two gusts. in the long run, you can switch to avenger. gusts can be used effectively on stalker as well
try ang get tarans: very high sustained damage output, so good for brawling. in the new economy, it takes lot if timeand Ag to upgrade though.
for mid-long range, get two zeus, then use them on natasha along with gekkos.
unless it is fun to use for you, i suggest you get rid of boa vityaz, and replace them with griffin leadhouse and galahad energy builds as mentioned above. keep upgrading your weapons and bots. there is no rule nor consensus in prioritizing whether bots or weapons to level up. that said, i would not upgrade anything that i would not use in the mid-long term: griffin is worth upgrading, so is orkans and tulumbas. punishers are cheap both in time and Ag to level up.
more importantly, experiment with different builds, and most importantly have fun.

+1 for custom game and hangar x.
Great advice already here on hangar building. Use the squad feature if you want to play together vs others instead of just against each other.

Just one other word of advice. We have a league called 6x6(level 6 bots and weapons). If y'all are having fun fighting against each other, then you might enjoy fighting together more. I did wish they had paintball when I was going up. I think I would've liked doing that with my dad instead of golf.
Also you might of got lucky-the average age here is 30-50

I seriously believe every mech is viable right up to Diamond league. Also lastly, what my son and I started doing is playing 1v1 but he uses the Pixonic premade hangar and I use my bots. It's so much more challenging. You guys could do opposite?

Have you watched any good starter youtube videos? That'll be real helpful. Here's one that cover's a lot of ground....

If you are going to build your hangar to play 1v1 against your kid, knowing what he typically runs in his hangar will help. When you play typical 6v6 games, a range of mechs is good so you want a few for close-range, and one or two for mid/long range and maybe one just for running beacons.
If you will be playing 1v1 against your kid, change to all short-range/mid-range right before you battle. If he has mechs with energy shields, make sure you have some plasma (magnums, etc.) or punishers/molots to take them down quickly. If he has mechs with physical shields, make sure you don't have only plasma.
Try to get your favorite mechs and weapons to level 6 ASAP, Griffins first. Maybe Fujin and Galahad next.
My kid plays way more than I do. I may play an hour or two in the evening and he'll play various games throughout the week and tons on weekends. He can play a fast, dashing, darting, style that I don't find much fun. I play to relax at the end of the day so prefer tanky builds or mid-range builds that rely less on operator skill to stay alive. I like my Leo with Ancile and three Magnums. I like my Falcon with Avenger and two Zeuses. I like my Fujin with Hydra or Tarans. I like my Griffin with Molot/Molot T. I just got my 5th hangar slot last night and am trying to decide what to put there. Right now it's a Griffin with Orkans/Pinatas.
Spin for chests as often as possible (use the ads for free spin on bronze and use 100 keys for silver). You can get some good stuff. Check the royal daily, as you can get some free cards and you might have a lot of coins saved up for use if you see something you really want.

Wow... great info so far. There's some jargon I might need to look up ("leadhouse" etc...) just to clarify advice, but it all sounds pretty solid.
Several folks mentioned I should swap out the Shocktrain. My son was pretty excited when he got it a while ago so I figured it must be one of the better weapons. Is that not the case? Or was it once a good gun but is now outdated, or is it just that it shouldn't be used on the Boa (as it is now) and put on a different bot?
Anyway... that was the only thing that actually surprised me so far since I was under the impression that the Shocktrain was some super-weapon.
Thanks and keep it coming! Much appreciated.

Oh... and should I keep working toward the Strider or give that up? I'm already about half-way there with 4490/10000 but don't want to keep sinking resources into that bot if it's not worth it. Seemed like a cool speedy bot (and my hanger definitely needs some speed).

Shocktrain is a powerful weapon but usually seen on bots that carry three or four of them. Shocktrains are much hated on this board because four of them fully leveled can one hit kill almost anything and damage nearby bots. Leadhose means an all machine gun build. Punishers and, if you're lucky, Avengers. Somewhere on this board there is a list of terms but if you just hang out here you'll pick it up in a week.

Seemed like a cool speedy bot (and my hanger definitely needs some speed). Keep producing comps for it (wsp 2.0). It's a great bot that serves so many purposes; for domination and beacon rush it's a top tier beacon capper. For TDM it's great for flanking behind enemy lines and diverting attention. For your OP it's a great dueling bot for the 1v1 with your son. Put gusts and a thunder on it, save all 5 dashes and wait till he jumps/engages you. Dash laterally until he wastes his salvo trying to hit you then unload and dash away. Rinse. Repeat. Loser does the dishes

Shocktrain was nerfed recently but it’s still pretty good at high levels in multiples, but on a Boa with Thunder not so effective. Orkan is better here as others have said.
You said your son has a similar hangar level, so he’s kicking your butt with tactics vs raw firepower. Watch him play and try to talk about his thinking when he does something you wouldn’t have done. Know thy enemy.
Learn the strengths and weaknesses of each weapon. Like the RDB is great at hitting opponents just behind cover with its splash but you need to fire just to the side of cover and not directly at the bot.
Also, what is his typical hangar? Depending on what he’s running you might switch things around to best counteract his strengths. In a 1 vs 1 scenario there will be times you have the wrong build for what he’s running (like the Fujin against plasma) but it can go the other way too (Like the Fujin against RDB Griffin).
Speed can be just as big an advantage as firepower as it allows you to control range and place of engagement.
Tarans and Magnums are good but they are difficult to get at low player level. My newest account has Workshop level 22 and it’ll still take 25 days to build a Taran because only 5 slots are open and 100 Taran components available.
As others suggested definitely get rid of the Zenits and Noricums, those are only potentially useful in squad battles. If possible I’d get a Rogatka with Orkans or Tarans. It’s a quicker bot to upgrade (about 7 days to level 9), it’s fast and nimble with decent health.

As another middle aged dad... I want to point out that your son ENJOYS KICKING YOUR 「bum-bum」.... Quite possibly, if you start beating him regularly, your play time with him will sharply decrease...only you can assess this, but if so...is winning a game that will never earn you $$ or the respect of your peers worth more than the sound of your son's laughter when he beats Dad?
If you enjoy the game outside of playing him then working harder to upgrade your hangar is worth it...if not, then it's not worth spending real$$ on this game....
My suggestion....TULUS, PINS, PUNISHER SERIES on the quicker bots you have....try to run like hell and make him chase you down.
LEOS are cheap and tough (although slow) and will make him work harder to take you out...
Your GARETH & GALAHAD are great counters for SHOCKTRAIN in a 1v1 battle....PINS & TULUS will make him avoid counter fire...
My advice is coming from a "cheapskate" who has more fun listening to his daughter giggle than laying a beat down on her.

You're going to pay 50 dollars so you can beat your son in a video game? Have a little of pride here man.
-Run the Boa as Thunder/Orkan. -Run the Fujin with Punishers. -Pin/Tulu Griffin is fine. -Dump the Vityaz, run the Galahad instead and arm it with Punishers. -Throw two Thunders and 2 Magnums on the Natasha.
If you can get a Taran, put the Magnums and Taran on the Galahad and put Punishers on the Natasha or run the Magnum on the Boa. If you get a third Magnum, run a Magnum Thunder Leo instead.

Replace vtajz with galahad orkan magnum he will give you some speed.
You can cornershoot with this guy and the shield is strong against energy. The bot weakness is any kind of rockets. Galahad is not good in higher league but like this you use the orkan a very good weapon.
Griffin tulumbas is good
Natasha is cheap to level but the Zenit thingies ar no good.
I like the advice to lvl everything to 6. Note bots have max speed at 9
Sadly 50$ gets you nowhere. Maybe buy VIP to receive more silver

bronzeknee: "You're going to pay 50 dollars so you can beat your son in a video game? Have a little of pride here man."
I'm not sure whether "have a little of pride here man" is meant as dig or something else, but my apologies if I insulted anyone with that comment.
psychopsyd: I totally understand what you're saying. The only reason I went through the bother of putting all the information down and bringing it here for input is that I thought it would be fun to see his face sometime when we play again, and he's surprised I've actually got robots and/or weapons that are as good as his and I can give him a run for his money. I'm never going to get to a point (without paying WAY more than $50) where I'm playing this game enough to beat my son on a regular basis, so I'm 100% positive he will continue to get great satisfaction at kicking his old man's butt a vast majority of the time. If not, I can always try Fortnite... I'm sure he'd destroy me with great ease. :-)
Again, my apologies if something about my comment that I'd consider spending $50 real money was against some unwritten War Robot Code, or if I said it in a way that sounded bad. I certainly don't claim to know all the proper War Robot forum etiquette so please excuse any NuBe gaffs.
Thanks to everyone so far that understood where I was coming from and who were willing to chime in with their advice. Cheers!
