Don’t worry about some of those posts - the game (and subsequently the player community) is in a bad place right now. The game developers have employed some aggressive (possibly predatorial) monetization tactics over the last year or so.
But the game can still be fun to play and this forum still has many great members doling out great advice.
Take some of those posts simply as concerned pilots. Keep things light, don’t get (or let your kid get) sucked too far into being competitive and the costs associated with that (several thousand dollars or two+ years of playing to get a top hangar) and you’ll be just fine. $50 can get you some fun things and level them up so you can add a little more juice to your family rivalry.

Sorry just skimmed down to here. Seems like you got pretty good advice from a lot of players.
Just wanted to add:
That stalker would do well with a pair of gusts. It'll take down bigger beasts AND give you a decent beacon runner. You'll also develop your skills counting down your stealth ability and cooldown, making you more fluid and effective in battle.
Galahad can do well with an aphid/orkan combo at the lower levels and is great for practicing corner shooting and working weapons individually. Both important skills to master later on. Learning to work the shield (stowing it when running) is also a good skill to hone as is the battle awareness to know when to do so.
Dont forget circling in combat, feints when moving in cover and watching and maintaining distance.
Good luck.

If you do want to spend wisely. If you and son like War Robots, get a premium account for both of you. Beleave me you will need silver sooner or later. And don't worry if you already have a millions, a billion isn't enough for the cost of upgrades that are coming.

The only reason that paying is frowned opon is that recently Pix has been getting more and more money greedy. Almost unethically greedy.

What’s your sons hangar?! If we know that it’s easier to suggest good countermeasures.

Well, my suggestion is more tactical than logistical, so here it goes.
Every weapon has an effective range. play the weapon inside it's range without getting inside your opponents weapon range and a relatively under powered hangar can be incredibly effective. For instance, if you see the adversary drop a pinata/orkan griffin, drop a tulumba/pin griffin. You have 200 meters of extra reach over the orks (plus a bit if you count splash damage, but I digress). Anyhow, once he gets in that 500m, slap some hurt on him and get out of there to reload. Hit and run tactics are super effective, especially if the other player is impatient; they start making fatal mistakes, like chasing you down to your spawn where, if you're in an under powered bot and you've done enough damage on the way, you can finish him off with a fresh bot right at your spawn point. Anyway, if you're using molots (800m range, 500m is the sweet spot) don't let him inside 500m, play the distance game to your advantage.
Learn how to use cover effectively and how to counter an opponent in cover. unguided missiles have a mechanic called 'splash' which basically means you can cause damage to a player with insufficient cover by virtue of the explosion causing ancillary damage. Tulumbas, and orkans to a lesser degree, are good at this. If your son is hiding behind one of those steel partitions in a TDM match, hit it with tulus and watch his health bar. sometimes hitting it on one side is more effective than square. this works if he's behind the corner of a wall as well, aim for the corner and let a few rounds go to see if he's sustaining damage.
Those are a few tips that may give you an edge. I concur with the other suggestions, especially about getting stuff leveled to 6 or better.
Good hunting!

Yeah buddy! Chalk one up for the ol' man. After having not played together for a week and a half, my son and I played some last night and dad finally got a win! Significant modification to the hanger, a few upgrades (yeah... used a little gold), and then practice navigating Griffin jumps, Galahad corner shooting and general "situational awareness" payed off and definitely caught "the kid" off guard. He was actually really happy (and suprised) I won, saying in full 12-year old boy mock exasperation: "Finally! I didn't think you were EVER gonna give me a good fight. Have you been practicing?" Here's the hanger now: + Galahad Lv5 Magunums (L6) & Taran (L5) + Griffin Lv6 Pins (L5) & Tulumbas (L5) + Griffin Lv6 Punishers (L6) & Punisher T (L6) (Lead Hose right?) + Fujin Lv5 PunisherT (L5s & L6); and the newest member of the family..... + Strider Lv4 Thunder (L6) & Pinata (L5)
Also got invited into a clan... I think by someone on the board here. Jaeger Tech 4 (flowerdestroyer = leader).
So, here are some new questions:
1) I haven't found a real strong consensus as to the best set-up for a Strider. I'm working on getting my first Gust, so maybe Thunder/Gust, but the Gust is probably weeks away in production (unless I get lucky and win some components) since I only have 4 build slots. For the time being is Thunder/Pinata OK, or are there better options?
2) I continually screen captures of other players with fancy backdrops to their hangers and elaborate "swirls" around robots in the hanger. I know it has nothing at all to do with the game-play itself, but I was just wondering how those were obtained and/or whether the different backgrounds meant anything in particular.
3) How does the Workshop level-up work? I've been at level 15 forever and don't seem to be aware of any means of upgrading. No "keys" won, and never seen as a reward after battle. What makes that metric increase?
4) Clans: What are the expectations of a person who's joined a base-level clan? I probably don't play enough to be a super asset to any clan, but what are the major "Dos & Don'ts" of Clan etiquette? I see that gold donations increase the power of the clan, but do many people really donate their hard-earned gold? Is it expected that I donate gold regularly?
OK... that's it. Having a LOT more fun with this game now that I have a better understanding of compatible robot/build configurations, but league advancement has already bumped me into significantly tougher battles. Went from Bronze II to Silver III (and almost Silver II) very quickly over the last week. While the increased rewards are great, I'm not sure I like progressing quite that quickly...
(btw... my apoligies if there are already dedicated threads on the topics I asked about above... feel free to call me on that... just trying to get some quick answers on those but if you want to direct me to the thread, I'm cool with that. )

1) Realtively good and cheap(ish) setup for Strider is Gust/Avenger. I guess Punisher/Avenger is acceptable also.
2)Have no clue what is meant here
3)Workshop progresses through "crafting" components. After each completion progress is made. But have you left any matches? No rewards after battle strongly implies to LPQ. Low priority queue. You end up there if you leave fights. That contradicts the paragraph after 4) so i'm not sure what to make of it.
4)Depends of the clan. Some are casual and just like being in a clan and the opposite side is active squading, comms and good activity. Gold expectancy is rather rare i presume. I for instance donate quite often if i have any to give. But you have to feel comfortable in a clan, otherwise there is no point.
I'm sure more good advice follows after my post.(pardon my grammar)

1) Strider is a wild little beastie. In general, close-range is best, since you can close range like nothing else in the game. Thunder and 2 Gusts is probably the simplest setup, and fairly cheap...Gusts are easy to acquire and reasonably easy to upgrade. Once you have some experience controlling it, you might want to switch to Ember, Exodus, Avenger, Dragoon...or even go defensive with an Ancile to take on Orkan builds.
***NOT RECOMMENDED FOR REGULAR PLAY*** If you want to annoy your son with a Troll build, put a Zenit and Noricums on it. No hope of catching you with anything other than a Kumiho, and no way to hide from your shots except for a couple maps that have tunnels.
Only use that in Custom 1v1 matches.

As another middle aged dad... I want to point out that your son ENJOYS KICKING YOUR ?bum-bum?.... Quite possibly, if you start beating him regularly, your play time with him will sharply decrease...only you can assess this, but if so...is winning a game that will never earn you $$ or the respect of your peers worth more than the sound of your son's laughter when he beats Dad? If you enjoy the game outside of playing him then working harder to upgrade your hangar is worth it...if not, then it's not worth spending real$$ on this game.... My suggestion....TULUS, PINS, PUNISHER SERIES on the quicker bots you have....try to run like hell and make him chase you down. LEOS are cheap and tough (although slow) and will make him work harder to take you out... Your GARETH & GALAHAD are great counters for SHOCKTRAIN in a 1v1 battle....PINS & TULUS will make him avoid counter fire... My advice is coming from a "cheapskate" who has more fun listening to his daughter giggle than laying a beat down on her. First of all, what a cool dad, you are. *respect And I vote for psychopsyd's opinion.
