I have been mulling over an idea to make some of the older robots and making them useful at a much higher level.
I feel that many people become discouraged with this game when, after spending 20 to 50 million silver to play at a relatively high level, they hit a wall needing to grind another robot; this time with gold and silver. If this continues every 3 months or so, much of the player base would rather step away from the game instead of spending time to grind and stay behind.
So here goes. I will give two examples. Take a Leo. You want to use it at top tier, but it needs a boost. You can choose using gold or wsp or both. Making a golden Leo - 2500 gold will get you a small hp reduction (15%) in exchange for a front mounted ECU. You want a speed boost ?? Make it into a super Leo with wsp. Top speed is lowered while gaining thrusters like a Lance. Say that costs 10000 wsp. Get both for the combination of wsp and gold.
Let's take a Rhino. No need for wsp, but 2500 gold will get you a 25% reduction in shield size and how in exchange for all weapons being usable and a reverse with the shield down.
I know this needs input, testing and tweaking; but I feel like it would still let Pixonic to make money, keep a player base and diversify the TT.
Thoughts. ??

Sorry for missed info - the Rhino shield would also lose 25% of it's hitpoints.

Sort of like an upgrade for existing bots?
But what is the opportunity cost of developing an upgrade kit, which is equivalent to creating a new bot really, vs creating a whole new bot. The latter is more favored I think as it is more interesting and has more revenue potential.
From the player pov retaining upgrade level sounds good, but for Pixonic that's lost revenue potential, as upgrades can be accelerated with gold.
So no, I don't think see it happening.

The devs toyed around the idea of putting special abilities on silver mechs for a dev only + vloggers match. Cossack got 120 kph speed, Leo got dash, Vityaz got jump. Can't remember what the Golem got. Was it dash? Remember they don't make the Dash robots obsolete, as the Dash robots have other abilities, such as physical shield or built in ancille.
I believe the game gets most of its revenue from people subscribing to premium accounts so they have increased silvers, the silvers are used to upgrade mechs and weapons.
Silvers are and still the most important currency in War Robots due to the upgrades. Unless players are going to use Gold to skip the time process.
Encouraging people to continually upgrade their bots and weapons is what business is for them --- and that's why the new structure in matchmaking encourages that, whereas before it would have discouraged it, since upgrading forces the new player into a higher tier they cannot compete.
A stagnant meta goes against their business model because once the meta bots and weapons are upgraded to a desired level, people will stop. And stopping means less revenue.
By forcing people to adapt and continually adapt, people will also upgrade the widest range of bots and weapons as possible, and that means more prolonged premium time use.
The game doesn't have an eternal flow of new content, in bots and weapons, so it needs to make older bots and weapons more relevant in the meantime. Its why we have a boost on silver weapons --- Tulumbas, Pins and Pinatas. Why Molots and Punishers are being boosted.
At first I thought why Pixonic would boost cheap silver weapons like Molots and Punishers to damage and wear away physical shields more, especially since the shields belong to gold bots. Don't you want to be pay to win, make gold bots and weapons better so people will buy them? But its the other way around, silver weapons are being boosted to help kill gold bots --- the Tulus, Pins, Pinatas, Molots and Punishers ---that doesn't and should not sound good for revenue, doesn't it?
No its not, unless the revenue is being collected somewhere else. And that comes from upgrading and upgrading all these silver stuff so they can be competitive at higher tiers. And that means premium accounts, or gold being used to purchase upgrades.
I would propose that Pixonic should consider giving old bots some special abilities, but with a catch, so you don't have power creep at lower tiers. I propose the special ability only becomes manifest when the bot hits Level 7.

I appreciate the well thought out responses. I guess that I am in the minority. I would make an impulse buy of gold to upgrade a level 12 robot, but would never consider paying a monthly subscription to buy a robot with gold and then spend 50 million silver and a few weeks to upgrade it to level 12 just to compete. Spending silver on newer weapons (and moderate amounts of gold) I would do.

Why would you bother upgrading it to level 12. Just level it to 6 and be happy with silver.
The best idea I can think of is a technique many RPGs used when leveling an avatar.
At certain levels, the avatar gains a new special ability. Let's say the Leo.
When it reaches Level 7, lets give a dash ability.
When it reaches Level 10, lets give it a built in ancille ability.
Or let say, when it reaches 10, the Leo model changes as it gains spaced armor, which acts like limited physical shields.
