I just purchased a Gareth and have a couple of questions:
1. When the shield is unengaged (resting in the left side position), does it in fact protect the left side of the bot? I presume so, but would like confirmation.
2. I intend to run the Gareth as an end-of-battle beacon capper, replacing the Stalker I currently use for this purpose. With a lot of full speed, open field running in mind, what would a good loadout be?

1. Yes it offers protection to the LHS of the bot. If you turn 90 degrees to the right it will protect you from fire coming from ahead as you either run forwards or some other direction.
2. I started using mine again since the recent update. Orkan/pinatas is great.

Plasma is the best setup for the Gareth, but I would not use it as a last second runner because you will not be able to push beacons. Gareth is used for harassing the enemy near beacons to provide support for your teammates to eventually retake it not for single-handedly turning beacons.

I myself have a lvl 5 gareth and have found that 1×taran 1×gekko works great, mainly for the gekko to knock of some hp before in range of the taran

Yep, plasma (taran mag) is generally seen as better.
I have had to drop mine with the rocket buff though. Just doesn't survive when being hit by 20m splash from all angles.

Im diamond league and gareth is my favorite bot here are my observations:
Plasma gareth
pros: can easily take out most types of griffins and carnages.
cons: It's weak against shield bots.
orkan/piñata gareth (my favorite loadout)
pros: can win 1v1 against plasmahad or gareth. Excellent at flanking slow bots for alpha strike drivebys. Decent against most griffins.
cons: energy shields can be a problem but if you're quick you can run into a carnages or fujins shield and circle strafe them to death.

I use a Gareth with an Orkan and Pinata. The general idea is to handle opposing Gareths who have plasma weapons. It's been working out pretty well for me.

Yes the shield protects...
considervthese points.
Orkan/Piñata 300m does a lot of initial damage...then you wait/hide.... get smashed (Setup A)
Mag/Taran... 350m does a lot of damage in a sustained fashion... (setup B)
B beats A eveytime... Unless you are toe to toe... that extra 50m is a killer
or go punisher/Tumbalas... 500m range...
you donr one see many for s reason though...
mag/Taran all the way

I took my gareth & galahad out of my hangar since the update since pins and tulus are out everywhere right now. a gareth just doesn't have a chance in the current, post-update meta. this will probably change soon, but i'd recommend you level it up but not use it for another week or two. that said, i used a taran/aphid on mine. i didn't use orks/pins because its the gareth's greatest weakness. if you have Orks/pins and are standing within range to shoot a DB griffin with them, you've already lost. i think acethunder/ lloyd le mar had a video that taught me that a few months back, but i can't remember. so i personally recommend #1- plasma, #2-taran+aphid, #3-punishers, or (stretching it) #4-pin/tulu
cheers,

With a lot of full speed, open field running in mind, what would a good loadout be? 1: Yes. I often run while facing a completely different direction because of this. 2: Magnum/Taran is a pretty common setup for Gareth. It's my dedicated beacon capper and plasma bot. I pull it out when I need to take down a Carnage, PDB Griffon, or just to cap some beacons. You are weak vs explosive damage, so try to avoid Pin/Pinata/Triden/Orkan/Aphid/Tulumbas match ups. IE: don't switch over to your Gareth if a DB/RDB Griffon is near your spawn.

I take out plasma gary and plasmahads all the time with my orkan piñata gary. My favorite kill yesterday was walking into a full health ancilots shield and nuking his back while he helplessly spun around trying to target me. You just have to use the gary speed to your advantage. Wait until the enemy is distracted then release a volley on them and get them to chase. Then circle around and do it again and again until they drop.

For number 1 answer is yes. For number 2 answer is orkan/pinata or taran/magnum is good.

General consensus is plasma is the better setup. I prefer the orkan pinata setup but I start in mine and my primary targets usually are other Gareths and Stalkers. As a late game beacon capper, I would probably roll with the plasma.

Plasma Gareth.
I use it third or fourth (out of 5 slots). I run it as a late capper and counter to all the Carnages running around. You do have to be aware of where the rockets are though.

It's only day one if 2.9 on iOS, but Gareths and Galahads are not cutting it. There's too much splash all throughout the match on both sides. 3 of my 5 bots are heavies with rockets and the Brit bots other than Ancilots are getting creamed. Seeing a lot of rocket Rhinos today - this makes sense with the mid/long range energy weapons coming out of the woodwork. I think I'll be swapping out a Lancelot for a Rhino tomorrow and give it spin.

I've now taken all the shield bots out of my hangar and am running entirely short and mid range splash (and a thunder carnage).

In another 2-3 weeks, all the pilots that didn't already gave 2-4 Tulus and 2-4 PINs will have them all leveled up to at least level 11. I expect quite a few pilots will have 2 heavies in the 500m splash category. With all the 3-6 spare L11 and L12 Griifs/Rhinos every pilot that been playing at least 18 months has, I think it's an easy call to say we will be flooded with rocket heavies as soon as everyone gets their rockets leveled up.
