Just need to say this somewhere but my dog is over night at the vet with extreme lacerations (her term but one I very much agree with). I'm a grass samurai or hand mowing aficionado which is hard to explain and gets even more confused with MMOs wildly inaccurate portrayal of the military scythe. Interestingly Mount and Blade gets it right (among other things, love seeing WFOs in the villages!). Anyway, somehow he managed to lift the 120cm (~4 foot) blade off the ground (I think he must have stepped on the handle/snath) and than ran into it with both front legs about 15cm high. It probably wasn't sharp enough to shave with but close to professional culinary cutlery standards... just think 4 foot razor blade. On the right side I had to control the bleeding with a high pressure bandage just to get there. I feel absolute sick. Couldn't eat and probably won't sleep. I read somewhere that some individuals react more to the death of a beloved dog than a relative. Obviously those sorts of people are weird and I'm one of those sorts of people. I'm taking [lots of] medicine for the pain.

It's not weird to value a pet that loves you unconditionally and one who you are extremely close to all the time over an unknown/distant relative or a relative that you may have a grudge with.
Hope your dog gets better, I would suggest spending as much time with him as possible since pets feel better when their owners are around.

Best wishes for your loved one.
Just googled your hobby. That's pretty amazing, actually.

Best wishes for your loved one. Just googled your hobby. That's pretty amazing, actually. Hey thanks. If you didn't find it my mentor Peter Vido's Scythe Connection website has way more info than one can process in a reasonable time. Also because of weird politics involving Peter, youtube, and Bob Dylan their best videos are on some sketchy site. Still worth it to watch a 14y old Ashley blaze about in the "end of oil" video. My 9y old is probably up to making some good videos this summer. Luke will be fine I'm sure, just pay $500 USD and pick him up in the morning. The stress/personal agony... that's something only parents and pet owners get.

Luke (injured dog) playing with newest member of fambly.
Vomit inducing video of some mowing with the exact same 120cm blade Luke hurt himself on.

Ow, it's not that weird to be moved by the death of a pet than a relative, it's the depth of the relationship that matters and obviously a dog that is with you all the time will be closer to you than a distant relative, unless you're talking about your parents or siblings, in which case you weird ?firetruck?. Hand mowing aficionado or grass samurai, how very interesting. I always feel like world is full of surprises and angles like these. Just remember to secure your tools well so nobody gets hurt the next time. I hope Luke gets better soon.f
That scythe is crazy sharp, do you go onto some random grass patches for your hobby or offer to help your neighbour's with their grass patches?

Best of luck for your dog...I hope it gets well soon.
And if I understand it right...your hobby is cutting grass with a scythe?
Edit: Whop. Seems like you posted a video while I was off googling grass samurai.

<snip> That scythe is crazy sharp, do you go onto some random grass patches for your hobby or offer to help your neighbour's with their grass patches? I mow about 6 hectares (~15 acres) a year by hand for $15 USD an hour and since it takes about 14 hour a hectare it certainly doesn't pay any bills, heck half of it will go to this injury practically. But yeah, the secret of the grass samurais is a sharp blade. I'm mostly mowing orchard/vineyard areas, not clear field culture. I could be faster there.

That sucks, dude. Hope your dog recovers quick, lumpybump. I like dogs more than most people. Also, quite the interesting hobby. Hadn't heard of it as a hobby, but my Dad was from Spain and a scythe is how they harvested and mowed everything where he was from. Edit. Border Collies are some of the best dogs. Dad was also a sheep herder and we had em for pets/workin dogs growing up. High strung mostly, but Good Dogs.

Paps, +DethHilt+, and a select few others I'm sure, yeah dogs (I'm especially fond of Border Collies) are the best people...unless you have kids. I understand some folks don't get on all that well with their own, but for me it's only grownups I have a problem with [if ever].

Heart goes out to you, sir. I'd pick my dog over almost every human being I know and I like most of them just fine. Dogs are really tough, so thoughts are with you and your family that Luke pulls through. Having experienced it, if amputation winds up being necessary, dogs are super adaptable and can get on just fine with 2 or 3 legs, especially a collie sized dog. If they're part of the pack family, they thrive just the same as when they had all four. They just want to be around us and their friends.

Luke is fine and if I'd known in advance therapy this good would be free I would stop paying the firetrucking man.
Again, thanks y'all.

Mine got me through some rough times and even though she's been gone over a year, I still have moments when I expect her to meet me at the door.

I totally get that. Last night was the first night for a long time with out him (intact male and ran wild about a year ago). I drank myself to sleep and hopefully didn't insult too many forum members. Still not having someone in your room/bed/house you are expecting changes your perspective.

miscanthus sorry, I should probably do this as a PM but your name is interesting to me as I both grow biomass Miscanthus and design and build inverted down draft thermal mass heaters (not co-generation, much smaller scale). Anyway I peg you for a farmer or landscaper and call you out. Why miscanthus?

Your vet bill comment made me laugh. After my flea and tick covered Lucy adopted me, I took her to the vet. $150 later, she had her shots and microchip. Then the vet says, "We'll have to test her for heartworms before we can start her on the preventative meds." Well, as my luck would have it, the results were positive. So our vet said, "The shot she needs to kill the heartworms is $75. She'll need two. There is no guarantee she'll recover from them. What do you want to do?" I'm thinking, why didn't you do the heartworm check BEFORE giving her the other shots and microchipping her? In for a penny, in for a pound, right? She got the shots, spent a month only going outside to do her business and thankfully survived to live a long, spoiled life. By the time all was said and done, the free dog that chose to be my best buddy ever cost me $300 in the first week.

Anyway I peg you for a farmer or landscaper and call you out. Why miscanthus? Hi lumpybump, I posted the following two paragraphs in the name thread. I've always loved plants and especially different varieties of ornamental grasses. "I've worked in the horticultural industry for the last 25 years. Miscanthus is Latin for one of my favorite ornamental grasses. Playing MMOs I liked ranger/scout/druid type characters and a plant based name was a good fit. It doesn't make much sense when applied to a giant robots, but I still like the name ?" Your guess was very accurate. I worked on a farm when I was younger, owned a landscape company for 15 years and now manage a large design/build landscape firm. I tell people I get paid to play in the dirt. I couldn't ask for a better job.
