I wonder how close to the Battletech storylines they could get without being in trouble. Hell they even had two names for the same mechs. (Inner Sphere and Clan names for some mechs that both had) Timber Wolf anyone? Was'nt that the most op mech ever? Nope - that would be the ... forget which mech - something light and fast... that I loaded out with machine guns. Strip most of the heat sinks off and put 8 (or was it 12) MGs on it. Run in to close range and leg shoot. It was OP as hell. But yeah, the Timber Wolf with Gause Rifles was awesome. One thing I miss from Mechwarrior II was the heat mechanic. It worked really well to balance creative weapon loadouts. Yeah you could put insane weapons on some of the mechs, but one alpha strike and you were shut down from heat overload. It was fun to build loadouts for cold planets, or ones with water you could stand in, or have the option to kill the enemy but risk shutdown to do it. Good times. One of the best games ever (Ghost Bear's Legacy expansion to be specific) It's the reason I'm here.

I almost always ran mechs I built, rather than the "regular" ones. The rules were pretty good, but sometimes you could find a flaw here and there. For instance, before they changed the minimum tonnage to 25 tons I ran a small pile of 10 ton sprinters with no extra armor and the biggest engines they could fit. I literally charged right into the opposing mechs to cause engine explosions in my own mechs and make little nuclear explosions all over the place.
The most OP mech I ever saw, though, was a 100 ton mech I put together that had nothing but armor and machine guns. It took a massive beating getting close, but a zillion machine guns has a nasty tendency to also cause a zillion critical hits. My friends wouldn't even finish the match after I managed to ambush three mechs in a row with it and it stopped all three with one shot each.
