Back in April, I was in Gold III (Android) and was being constantly matched against significantly stronger opponents.
My hangar level was around 7/7, and I was consistently playing against 10/10 or so, sometimes seeing maxed out opponents.
I was barely holding up, oscillating between Silver I and Gold III.
Then somewhere around mid-April it seems like Pixonic rolled out a new MM system. Finding a game started taking ~10-15 seconds instead of 3 and opponents were closer to my level. I was still being out-levelled, but opponents were closer to lvl 8-9. I started progressing rapidly all the way until Gold I.
Surprisingly, my opponents hangers didn't seem to get much stronger and I kept being paired with opponents all the way across the Gold spectrum, rather than at my exact league.
I was being paired against Gold III more often than Gold I. Then the event came, and I happily graduated to Diamond.
Opponents suddenly got significantly tougher and I started seeing Lancelots everywhere and maxed hangers became the rule rather than the exception. I was being an underdog, paired with anything from high Diamonds all the way to Expert and Masters. In any case, somehow due to the event madness, a strike of luck and a bunch of full-diamond-squad games with my new clan, I managed to almost reach Diamond II. Win rate through the roof.
Then I went back to playing solo, and the reality hit me hard. Games upon games I kept being matched against skilled opponents 3-4 levels above me, and was being promptly destroyed. Despite trying my best, my win rate went down from 72% all the way to 36%, but still in Diamond. I was frustrated and hopeless, and started considering tanking back down to Gold. Remembering how 「dookie」ty is the LQ, I decided not to straight out leave games but instead change strategy: playing for fun instead of playing to win. Harassing opponents with my Gary and Jesse, not caring too much about beacons, going into spectator mode for a minute or two in games where I was getting crushed. My average damage went down and so did my rating, but game satisfaction went up. Finally I dropped down to Gold, and suddenly games became much more fair again.
So now I'm floating around 2300 rating, half my games in diamond and half my games in gold. Some games I'm playing to win and some games I'm playing just to 「fluffernutter」 around. Until I get my hanger levelled to 9-10 and get myself a Lancelot I'll probably keep the same strategy. I'm not in a rush though as I rather try out other bots and weapons than concentrate on levelling my main hanger and then be stuck playing the same hanger over and over.
I am hopeful that Pixonic is on the right track to fixing the MM, but as it is now I'm going to keep the same strategy to keep the games more enjoyable.
