I used the Rhino in that same mid range style when I first got mine.
I found Tulu's to be most effective for damage output but the Hydras are alright and don't tempt you to lower the shield in order to fire them.
From start to finish, no matter what, I recommend Magnums on it too. Crucial to have the constant fire to deter Carnages from rushing you.
The damage output while behind shield is what will buy time and ultimately save you many times.
Once you get used to the awkward mechanics of the Rhino, try it out with Orkans. Things only get better as it levels up.
