My thoughts, FWIW:

What I don't get, is why people insist that it should be LoS? There are enough weaknesses to using Aphids that if a player is smart, and/or has the right bots, they can easily negate the use of them. And what of the accusations of Aphid users being cowardly or being no-skill hack-jobs? LOL! Hiding behind cover, shooting Aphids, from 350m or less, is not cowardly. It is how those weapons are intended to be used. Short range, somewhat inaccurate, burst damage, locking/guided projectiles.

Does it suck to see 5 or 6 arcing smoke trails ripping your side to shreds? Of course. But, on the flip side, it also sucks to have 6 seconds of reload time on your Aphids left, and all of a sudden there is a DB Rhino in your grill, unloading. One has to be hyper-aware of the immediate battlefield to use them effectively, and survive. 350m is not a lot in this game, and you can guarantee that, as an Aphid user, you are on the hit list for the match. A Galahad or a Gareth, or a jumping Griff that has a full DB cycle ready, will be a threat.  You have to be able to adjust to the dynamic nature of the threats, to be a good user of Aphids.  They are deadly, but not insurmountable.

Aphids allow a smaller bot (i.e., Gep Aphid), or a larger, un-shielded bot (My favorite, Leo Aphid/Thunder), to compete with a Rhino or a Lancelot. No, it won't be toe to toe, but that's the point. A big bot like a Lance can get up in any other bots face and, potentially, come out on top. A Gepard or a Leo or, Hell, even a Griff, can't just sit there and trade blows. Even a DB Griff has to be constantly aware of the dangers to his/her fragile (in relation to the Brawler) chassis. So, Aphids allow for another method of fighting for those disadvantaged bots.  Which, in turn, promotes more diversity in the upper tiers, giving new life to bots that had fallen out of favor once the Orkan/Taran/Trident dominated parts of the Gold tier are reached.
