Since i started playing 2 months ago i was really puzzled by the incorrect use of the term TANKING by this community.
One would expect that it would be the normal term, meaning someone that stays in the front line and is able to withstand lots of damage, be it from an high HP pool, or using covers to shoot, or having strong shields.
In this community it is instead used for people that leave battle, they aren't even part of it, not even leaving a bot behind to tank. Early battle leavers are called tankers, ppl meching out at first bot are called tankers, if you do something un-ethical, basically you are called a tanker.
Why on earth , and who came with the bright idea to use the term tanking for something totally unrelated?
Why not just call them ditchers?
Can someone enlighten me please?

I wondered why it was that term... Then just thought of it as they are just sitting in their bots parked. Some of the bots look like tanks. So I figured that's it? IDK there are several odd terms used by these young whipper snappers these days.. Like something is loud for instance. I'm just old lol Btw I call them 「go solo」ers not tankers..I laugh more about that.... More like what they are really doing.

Uugh sigh....
Tankers = people who TANK their scores to drop down in the leagues, so no it's not the mmorpg term "tank", completely different genre, with the new mm and introduction of leagues to get to a lower league you have to have pisspoor stats, and to have that with high gear (except for being braindamaged) you have to TANK your score to drop in leagues
And yes they are both losers, 「go solo」ers and special, all at the same time.

Bots are Tanks, Players are Tankers. In this rock-paper-scissors game no bot can Tank damage in the traditional sense. Ancilot comes close, but dies fast to Torkelot, or plasma to the back or sides.

Try thinking about it as if your stock just tanked on the market after the market closed.

Tanking is a broader term than gaming. I heard some ESPN using tanking to describe NBA teams sucking on purpose to get a better lottery chance.

tank taNGk/Submit verb gerund or present participle: tanking 1. fill the tank of a vehicle with fuel. "the cars stopped to tank up" informal drink heavily; become drunk. "they get tanked up before the game" 2. USinformal fail completely, especially at great financial cost. NORTH AMERICANinformal (in sports) deliberately lose or fail to finish (a game). "the lackluster performance prompted speculation that he tanked the second set"
Hmmm to deliberately lose or fail.. sounds like people have been using it correctly

rotfl, this is the first time i have come to know of the original meaning of tanking. good to know. You never stop learning Considering this is a game, i find it surprising people chose to use it when the widespread use in gaming for over 20 years is the one of being able to take damage. But do you agree that the term can be confusing for the average gamer?

I agree with op. Tanking in all the mmorpg I played do refer to a player who can take/withstand massive damage, usually as part of strategy for other teams members. Here, oh well. Tanking it is Note: Anci Lance would be a great tanker heh

I also remember in the pre-internet age that what mmorpger's today call a tank was called a brick. We used paper. And dice. Carved from cave bear teeth. And we liked it that way!

But i can give you a great al paca coat Btw, what i find more strange, is that for this particular term the community uses the correct dictionary meaning, while it went nuts creating funny gamer names for everything else

<snip> But do you agree that the term can be confusing for the average gamer? I had the same original double take you did. Much like how people changed the definition of a "gun" from the mid-late 20th century. It is so odd to have radically different meanings for the same word in the same game. I have tanked damage with my Galahad while the team grabs a beacon in Canyon. I have accidentally tanked by capturing three of five beacons on Springfield ending the match early no inflicting a sliver of damage. My team really tanked the match by playing like a bunch n00bs that stayed back and sniped.

In the early '90s my dad was aboard a KC-135 tanker during a refuelling mission for the now-decommissioned SR-71 Blackbird.
Oh.

Tanking is used in professional sports when a team loses on purpose to increase their draft position. not uncommon

Now that we know where "tanking" comes from, can we discuss the misuse of "salty" to mean angry instead of crude and vulgar?

Both definitions are valid. It would make more sense to use tank since it's a common gaming term, plus mechs are basically giant walking tanks (you know, the WWII era armoured vehicles). So it was kinda strange at first to not see this usage. He's tanking, errr, what?
In sports, esp. the NBA, teams tank and lose to gain an advantage in the lottery draft. I think most other sports don't have as much tanking, only basketball since the rules are meant to make terrible teams competitive so all teams have a chance to win, and the league remains balanced. When I read about the Lakers tanking this season, I don't get confused with the gaming definition due to context.
I always thought it was strange that words can have two totally different definitions. Why not make a new word up to avoid confusion. I guess in this case, it's a collision of 2 worlds and one lost. So what do you use for the gaming one now (bot that can take a lot of damage)? I try not to reuse the word, and randomly pick other words. Also, how did tanking come to be used in sports? I'm guessing the sinking of tankers (boats that carry oil) like the Exxon Valdez, one of the worst oil spills in memory?

If we only had a thread of terms maybe called glossary. Maybe a poster like sochilli (Saltesers) could create this thread. Then we could get it stickied by a mod.
