Alright, it's been long enough since I first ended here with a headful of steam, creating an account here to vent post. Heres a proper introduction for me.
I began playing War Robots back when it was still Walking War Robots. I still distinctly remember really enjoying Old Yamantau, running a 2x Punisher 1x Spiral/Ecu/Aphid Gepard, fighting for mid or capping the ground points as a wee lad. I played till a bit after Gekkos were released. They were quite a bit busted, with 1100m range and heating effect- in hindsight, given the game's state, probably sinisterly subtle foreshadowing- but I managed to grind some out.
And then I had to stop playing.
When I eventually rediscovered the game it was late 2019-early 2020- understandably, it had long since changed. I lost that account, but it was quite easy picking the game back up. Now armed with a bit of money, I was disappointed to find out that Gekkos just kinda sucked now, but thats when Pixonic came in with the Fuijin newbie deal- a very potent introduction to the new abilities and mechanics (i.e shields). With that, leveling was a breeze- until I ran into my first Titan.
Since Titans never existed as far as I knew before, they were an unpleasant surprise. They had far more HP than a normal robot, and even though they all had the same machine-gun weapons they dealt insane damage. I quickly learnt to hide from them- no way would my barely leveled robots and equipment take them head-on, not even side-on. Probably not from behind either because they could activate their metal-melting AOE ability. I think at this time I also got an Ao Jun from a crate, but that still wasn't enough. Eventually, I was able to destroy one. That match may have been lost and it took an entire hangar, but I did it. Probably the most frustrating part was that I couldn't find the damn thing in the Robots list- How did people have it? I searched the wiki, but for a while I didn't find my answer. Eventually I would find out that the player needed to reach level player level 30 to access titans.
The next part was my most enjoyable time but also a kind of a blur. I would get Leech, run it with 4 Cryos, Cormac Falcon, Behemoth. I remember setting up my 4x Thunder Behemoth on Shenzhen behind that building overlooking a beacon which Behemoth was just tall enough to shoot over- perfect cover, and absolutely scaring the pants off someone who tried getting around the cover with the Thunders ripple-firing and melting their HP. Its not a viable strategy, but it was fun.
Of course the early times couldn't last. There were more effective bots to get. Playstyle shifted to efficiency. Scorpion was disgusting, but as someone who effectively began playing (properly) it was acceptable- watch the 350m mark and one was a bit better off. Hades gave me my first purple shield, in time to rise to the challenge of meeting Ao Ming. There seemed to be a good deal around every corner, too.
And slowly, it started getting worse. Hawk was added, and as we all know was insanely busted- at the time it was due to the ability doing full damage to robots too, but in hindsight it was really adding another type of protection system that had no counters. And it would just get worse over time; but for some time, I was able to keep moving forward.
Kramola was my personal point where I realized it wasn't going to get better. A homing, non-magazine, direct fire weapon with no lock-on? There's no way to justify it. Sharanga with Strikers, supersized Shocktrain Spectres. Mk3, increasing the gap between the haves and have-nots. Overpowered build-up modules. Though, this is when I finally got my own access to the drone brawling meta. I knew now that I couldn't reach the top sensibly, so I played more relaxed, now running Mender and Fenrir to be somewhat survivable in this landscape. And after I had my fill. I mostly quit. That was before the drone rework.
And here we are. Theres nothing for me to come back to. Actually, I have negative things to come back to by this point. Upgrading has become veraciously monetized. Every aspect must have its own currency. Data is sold to advertisers to spam you with War Robots ads if you ever decide to quit. The balatant moneygrabbing powercreep of "Ultimate X" and whichever new equipment just released. Every match outside of Champion is just hiding for 2 mins as 1-3 Hurricane Bots per team autofire then self-destruct, and/or at the whims of whichever Tanker happened to decide to get a victory. Progression lost any meaning, there is nothing new that can be grinded, nothing worth grinding for, only more powerful stuff to be bought with real money - as a drop from a lootbox. (You could also technically call those currencies, too, treating each datapad as a "key" to a chest which you can "get").
If trust is earned in drops and lost in buckets, the bucket is not just empty, but I've thrown it into the trash. Only thing left, really, is to countdown to End of Service.
Well, that's me, and my experience. I didn't climb to the max, and now I will never. I've heard parts of many other stories. That it was the Wild West bots that were the first proper power creep. The Shocktrain Spectre Meta. Climbing spiders. Thats all thats really left, but its intresting. I'll be here awhile.
