Held this view for some time but wondering what others got to say about this theory.
Some weapons especially new ones and some UE ones seem to have kill priority. In this context, I would define kill priority as an outcome when multiple blues shoot at the same target and the player with a particular weapons set seems to get most of the kills. When pix nerfs the weapon, then under similar circumstances the contested kill rate drops and turns into assists.

Not sure if nerfing the weapons causes more assists than kills, but I do know that it is certainly possible. It also depends on the kind of weapons. For example, as far as I've played war robots, kinetic weapons tend to pick up more assists than energy shelled or laser weapons tend to.

I think the weapons that are a 'particle stream', like lasers and tasers, automatically pick up a lot of kills, just by virtue of being constant. They live in the gaps between bullets

Drawing from my own experience here running older MK3 weaps like the rads, bose, flaming balls, and maces.
Going against the baby meta in masters and baby champs often, I can say my weaps outkill my teammates better than 50% when we’re all banging on a ball or other fatties. But up against the 6000 and higher crowd, I get mostly assists playing same load outs the same way.

Definitely something in this.
Latest release weapons tend to get more kills but probably due to the fact the DPS is always so high. Wouldn't put it past pixonic to include a higher chance of getting the kills on newer weapons also.
Even to the point where YouTubers feel "robbed" that they didn't get the kill when using newer items, saying things like "how did I not get that kill? I am using X weapons and they put out so much damage".
