I need something decent to fill out my 5th slot (which I haven’t opened yet, because once you do, there’s no going back). Is Sentinel worth $20 at 3.6? Any other suggestions? I need something fairly robust, but faster than a garden slug for that first beacon foray, which is why I’m shying away from another tank. Out of the box, the Sentinel already has more HP than my 4* Panther, though a lot less firepower. Guardian is available for a lot more a-coins than I have in hand, and it’s also very squishy. All the other good stuff is still unavailable. Or do I just stick with 4 slots for now?

Don't get Sentinel and definitely not for that price (I am getting offer a 2-Star for $1.99). I don't see anyone running it and I don't think it's that good. I think it's one of those items that looks better than it is when AI is running one.
There are a lot of good mech options out now to get instead. What are the four mechs you are already running?

Currently running: Surge 3.5 with AT 6 & 10 Panther 4.2 with DL 8 & 12 Bastion 4.6 with MR8’s Killshot 4.6 with HR 6 & 10 In the barn I have a Lancer at 2.7 with over 600 bp’s, Juggy at 4.1 with 128 bp’s, and Paragon and Arachnos that I really couldn’t give a poop about. For unused weapons, besides the usual startup stuff, I have PC4’s and PC8’S, TL6’s, SB8’s, SG8’s (from an event), LA10, GR 4’s and 6’s, JR 4-6-8-12, and Minigun 8’s. Some of these I’ve tried and don’t like, some I just have no interest in using. I have no idea what to do with those Javs - one thought is to level up the Lancer with Jav 4’s for that 5th slot, as I know that can be a troublemaker up on rooftops. But again, I’m not sure it’s worth opening that 5th slot for.

Definitely get Guardian. Its still able to counter most abilities and it is actually an amazing CQC combatant. You do need weapons appropriate to it though. Early on, I used MR8 and eventually LAs. I did stop using it for a while until I managed to score RG16 and did the old Thanos build. Now, with dual RG16, it's my most consistent mech alongside GB16 Panther. If I could clone my Guardian or Panther, I would drop Redox in a heartbeat.

So why isn't your Surge the go-to mech for seizing beacons at first?
Guardian is squishier but still good, because of its ability. Gatecrasher is beefier and faster, so it's a good option too, but the ability won't be as useful. Redeemer and the new Eclipse are the other main meta mechs. Given you're starting at square one with either, I think you might want to wait until Eclipse goes on sale. Redeemer is useful, and can definitely snatch beacons but like its Backtrack ability, it is more about avoidance. As a stealth mech, Eclipse might be best for seizing beacons out of the gate, as well as CQC. Definitely watch YT to see what the verdict on it is, but I already heard some good stuff about combining it with Missile Racks.
Last two possible mechs are Stalker, which I like but is only good with DLs or RMs and requires careful play. Similar is Orion, which is more a sniper mech. Stalker is still a beast for FFA where it can super-heal, but overall I'd probably look at the other four versus these two.

Depending on the map, it’s either Surge or Killshot as the first beacon grabber. Trouble is, they both outrun the rest of my team (unless I have an on-the-ball hooman zipping right behind me); so if there are reds with the same intent, I have no support, especially if I bypass the home beacons and go straight to center. Sometimes it works, but reds usually seem to have this habit of sending two or more to center to invite me to tea and biscuits. They’re so considerate like that. Thanks for the info, but I think I’m gonna just sit tight for now, until I’ve gone as far as I can with these four mechs. Bp’s for everything I’m running are so rare, it’ll be a good long time before I need to think about what’s next.

Yeah, since AI has gotten maxed it's usually better not to rush the third beacon, but lurk in ambush and wait for your AI to distract the enemy. Sniping is also a good opener on a lot of maps.
Sticking to four slots is a fine way to go. No need to rush.
