What's the point of tournament's if you get put in a bracket with the knucklehead who outgunned you by 2,000 points?

I totally get your frustration on that. But 2,000 is really the floor for holding a lead. I usually try for double my nearest competitor's score (unless it's Grandmaster). I am lucky and I can play a dedicated chunk of time in the mornings and usually try to play 9 games for 3,500-4,000 points. It's pretty successful in dissuading folks from chasing me, although enough still do. When I didn't yet have the hangar to post those scores, I pared back my expectations and often went for 2nd or 3rd place instead.
That said, finding a good time of day to start tourney and get less intense competitors and more AI matches is really key. Taking last place on the first heat for the same reason is also best.
EDIT: I only recently starting doing this regularly so I forgot to mention it, but going through the tournament histories of the top guys is also a good move. That way you can see what scores they're used to posting for that bracket. Also keep an eye on when they last logged on - that can be helpful to see if they've given up or if they keep checking to see if your score hasn't increased.

At my level, and even if I'm just mid-game, competing in Grandmaster is impossible.
Following advice from this forum, I purposely "lose" (finish last) the first two heats, so that the last heat is Master level. Also, I play 1h30 before the end of that final heat. As a result, I can frequently land 500+ A-coins throughout the tourno. That's not a big income, but it's a reliable one.

Grandmaster is nearly pointless for me. I can can occasionally stay in top six, but usually it’s a lot of work.
What amazes me is how many players do the backtracking strategy some of you are referring to. When I do it my matches are full of real players. Two-three people per side per match. I’m like: ‘Ya’ll get out of here, go away.’
I can imagine the lower SP players don’t like it either.

Because that will often get you less competition within a bracket, but in terms of how many human players you face in a match, that's usually what time of day you play.

Yeah, that’s what I mean by backtracking. Not sure what’s going on. I’m playing my usual times this weekend and I’m getting owned by EM rifles. Just had back to back matches with full player/no AI on either sides. I’m having War Robots style seal clubbing flashbacks - by players with less SP than me, 😳

Could be matchmaker is cracking down on you. That occasionally happens to me. I found on today's map that getting behind central pillar with DLs equipped was a good counter to EMRs. Especially if they are hiding behind the middle wall in the temple complex - you can just bounce shots up through the upper window and off the ceiling to take them out.

In general DL (and mortars 😵💫) are still the natural counter against EM riffle. The problem now is that EM are so overpowered that if they can land a shot you're done. So you need to be able to hit 4 or 5 times and stay away from their fire... some lag in your connection and that's mission impossible

I'm going back to my old tactic of just playing enough to get some Fortune Keys, stockpiling the fortune keys, and then splurging on the crate rush to get the 400 A-coins. Yeah, it takes a while, but it's a marathon not a race. Occasionally, if I see that no one in my bracket is really playing, then I'll grind and try to get 1st or 2nd. Sometimes, I'll get the 200 A-coins for Professional tier and that's a nice bonus. TLDR, play what you can and don't drive yourself crazy.

PlusI go for the weekly 200 acoins. 🪙 🪙
