Hadn't really played my with Aegis much until it popped up on the specialization spree. (I see mind's careening into the gutter as I re-read that)
Anyway, I discovered that more often than not,I ended up taking damage whilst trying to poke my weapon out beyond the shield. Kinda how I ended up with 3 kids, but I digress.
DR's have solved that issue. Deploy the shield, back up a step or two, and fire around the edge, or straight over the top. Works really well, if you can deploy it at a slightly lower elevation.
One thing I have noticed is the AI bots stop firing immediately after the shield deploys. Sucks when you're actually trying to take shield damage or keeping a teammate alive to earn points for the Aegis individual bot tasks.
