I have absolutely no clue how points are awarded for this cluster.

Glad to hear it's not just me.

It's the same system that they used to progress in the old division system. I don't have a screenshot right now (that might be useful). When you finish a battle I think it's 50 points for the first place of the winning team, 40 for the next, etc. Zero points for the first place of the other team, and negative points for the other members of the losing squad. I hope this was somehow useful.

Maybe they spent a lot of money opening those event crates? Those are worth like 500 each or something right?

The crate points are for the leadership event not top 500 season rankings.
So I was just calculating out of curiosity. If it's 50 points for a 1st place win, then 14,000 pts would be 280 matches if you had a 100% win rate coming in 1st each time. At 5 minutes a match that'd be 23 1/3 hours playing time, so about 8 hours a day.
But win rates are never 100% and it's negative points if lose and are 2nd or less. Overall if you play solo you're pretty likely to be in 1st place win or lose. So let's say a win rate of 80%, which is 350 games at about 29 hours total or about 9.7 hours a day grinding solo every day. Using the same math for 120,000 points, it'd be 8.3 hours grinding every single day for 30 days straight. It's doable but yeah that's bat-「dookie」 crazy.
On the plus side, this is making me feel a lot better about how much (or comparatively little) I play this game...
