Forgive an ignorant question, but is there no real way to get A-Coins in MA except for buying them, with the exception of the very random lucky Fortune Vault roll?
I am at the point where most of my units need 1,200+ to get to the next level, yet I don’t want to shell out the cash. But, am tired of getting killed within 3 seconds in Deathmatch because of OP opponents.
Yes, losing is part of the game. Yes, I am a poor loser. As much as we ripped on War Robots, at least we could get weaponry/mechs for free.

Besides the two ways you mention, the only other ways to get A-Coins seems to be events and fortune vault blitzes, tourneys.Weekly objectives nets us 200 about every five days. My hangers so far behind that tourneys won’t help, and the events are a trickle; 100-400 A-Coins. I think the trickle of A-coins and the amounts needed to upgrade are designed to get players to spend.(Sorry to be Captain Obvious there.). I tend not to spend unless it’s a remarkably special offer. I keep just enough A-Coins to afford Legendary Implants I’m interested in. A-Coins for upgrades are limited to long term commitments. I’ve lost the drive to spend resources on experiments.

Clear weekly gets you 200, and the few you get in crates adds to that. Getting first in tournament helps, but to do that consistently you need to buy tickets. This past season battle pass gave us 100 A-coins, and about 800,000 credits. It is money, but it is an OK deal.

....oh, in the past it was much easier to aquire A-coins without a wallet, but after it came out of beta, they messed with the metrics

Tournament is the main way to earn. Of course that is a time suck, so it may not work for you. When you grind in tournament matters. The evening is filled with human players and the matches are terrible, so I avoid then. Morning or off-hours in the afternoon work much better. My strategy is also to skip one tournament heat in the beginning. The competition for the top places is fiercest if you consistently advance each tournament heat. At your hangar strength, I wouldn't bother going for first place on many heats, just the ones that are good opportunities either based on the map or your competition. The main thing is to invest in a Rocket Mortar 12 build. Ultimately Killshot and Stalker are the best endgame mechs for that but lots work well in the interim. No other weapon can consistently earn as many points on as many tournament maps as the RM12 so it should be your highest priority. Also there are more RM-dominant maps than the reverse.
Eventually as your hangar strengthens, you can more easily contest the harder brackets. Initially I tended to avoid going for first though I'd try to grind harder on Expert to get the 400AC. At this point I am averaging 300-400pts per match on maps with line-of-sight weapons and 400-600pts on Rocket Mortar maps, so I can grab first place and build up a quick enough lead to hold it. But I should point out that I did supplement with some spending and that's after 13,000 games played.
