“Hotshotting” is what I call playing too aggressively to get an early advantage that ends up with much (or all) of a team meching out too early. (From the pro wrestling use of “hotshotting,” which was using over-the-top outrageous feuds and fights to heat up business in a territory, only to ruin business because once everyone is burnt out and they’ve seen it all already.)
Classic example here. Team with a four-cap at the 8:30-ish mark decides to have five guys attack the remaining beacon. One, totally unnecessary; two, that really will only work in a BR game if you genuinely have an overwhelming power differential (played against a PALS squad last night that… yeah, when three of your players are in Legend, go to town I guess).
Because here’s the thing: much of the game is like rock-paper-scissors, only with a couple dozen bots and dozens upon dozens of weapons. If you’re at the opponent’s beacon and they get to choose which bot to drop in, you’re going to be at a disadvantage. And if your bot isn’t a brawler, being on top of the beacon might not be great.
I’m not saying this never works, obviously—it works if you’re PALS and it you might steal a few games if you’re not—but I see a lot of very winnable games get lost because teams get high on their early success and assume that if they overpower the first bot in the hangar they can steamroll the rest. I have two things that I generally consider symptoms of hotshotting:
1. If they bring out titans before the 7:30 mark, that’s a pretty good indication. 2. If you get triple kills or better with your first two bots when the other team has a four-cap, that’s a pretty good indication.
Neither of these are conclusive, but FWIW, when I see symptoms that I’m dealing with Hotshotters, I start playing extra conservatively, and reserve my titan and at least a strong-ish regular bot for the end of the match. That way, when the other team has lost half of its titans and the others are at half health, I can drop in a Lucha and take another five of six of them and their beacons.

Sadly, most mid-ranged cap camper builds are dead or rare anymore... so people just go all in face first for the spawn raid. Shock bots used to be a good counter for power build ups...they aren't effective anymore unless you have a striker build that can escape the ensuing mele battle to get a good sniping angle on the situation.
Nice analysis BTW.

As a well known hotshotter with a ridiculous amount of victories under my belt, I can say that it may be “bad” or it may be good, but it’s ALWAYS fun.
The one thing I disagree with you is that players who jump into their titans as early as they can deserve another nomenclature. Because I def press the action out of the gate, but NEVER drop my titan early, even if I can. IMO its just more fun to play speed chess than lumber along.

Yes, We've always considered you to be a hot-shot wallet warrior. Lumber. Lumber?!? Not my lovely Minos!

I confess I did prefer the game when it was a little more, shall we say, “tabletop-inspired.” But your post highlights an imprecision in my definition that I should correct at the top… hotshotting is bad when it means losing a war of attrition. (Even then you can still sometimes win the timer war!) That does mean the line between hotshotting and aggressive play is fuzzy and tricky, but I think that’s fine… hotshotting isn’t necessarily meant to be a specific thing not to do as it is a caution against unintentionally losing an otherwise winnable match by not being strategic. So you may still be a hotshotter, but if you’re doing it because it’s fun, shoot away! But here’s a video of me playing absurdly aggressively that I wouldn’t call hotshotting, exactly, because I was never in danger of losing the war of attrition:

@ J.u.n.k.M.a.l.e., that was a 5 cap nasty with a panty raid included. Not hot shotting on your team. Thier team, ye... a little "hot-shottedness" sending several bots to take D cap. I think I counted 3 Shells, 1 Scorpion, and possible another bot popped in for a sec to get wrecked.
Edit: I know that Revenant was mad he didn't melt you while trying to save their home beacon.

Yup, when a half-dead orochi takes out a revenant, you know somebody hasn’t maxed their revenant yet
