I know some people have a distaste for anime aesthetic, but Shadowverse is player friendly for F2P.
It is a 1 v 1 card game in the same vein as Hearthstone.
Like Hearthstone, it has rotation and unlimited formats.
Rotation makes it very F2P friendly, with the meta shifting maybe twice a year.
Card Crafting costs are fair.
For the current crossover event, they are doing a cross over with their own anime if the same name.
The event gives the player one of three temporary decks based on the Crossover release, including legendary cards, until the next release. The next release will be at the end of the event and current battle pass(which is the better deal over buying crystals). It ends near the end of the year.
The battle pass is the only thing worth spending any money on. In game currency pricing is weird due to platform and localization issues. The battle pass is 3 months, gives cosmetics, free packs, free packs for the upcoming expansion, and a boatload of the currency earnable in game.
The only exception is the "Newbie deal" available in the first week. The sale is only available the first week after starting. It is $20.99 USD for 1200 Crystals and 3 "Legendary" Packs, which guarantee a legendary card from Rotation. The offer is available for purchase 3 times. If you enjoy your first week, I ~ highly~ recommend taking this offer.
There are starter decks with 5 legendary cards each for 1200 Crystals, OR booster packs for 100 crystals(first pack is 50% off).
Because of wonky pricing, $20.99 USD is only 1200 Crystals at normal price. Holiday events open cheap (sub $10) deals on Crystals.
‐--------
There is also a long running series of single player story missions, and practice matches against NPCs with meta decks from the early game.
Beating each practice NPC on "Elite" difficulties 1, 2 and 3 will unlock achievements that award 200 coins(base currency) each. The total amount of coins that can be obtained this way is 4600.
Packs cost 100 coins.
Every new player gets 10 packs of every set currently in rotation, and 1 Legendary pack.
--------
ALSO: Shadowverse is a multi-platform game, and needs to be manually linked to another service through the client.
DO NOT link your account when you first start.
If you do not link your account, you can delete the game's data in your app settings and start a new account.
This is HIGHLY USEFUL.
This means if you just play around and figure out the game, you can wipe your local data and re-roll a new account. It creates an entirely new account. This means the aforementioned "newbie" offer can be made available when you're sure you want to stick with the game.
The first account is a throwaway just to understand the game mechanics and the general flow of a match.
For anyone that has already played it, but stepped away(as I have):
Blood and Rune are the up and coming Meta. Shadow and Rune are currently T1
Shadow is losing cards next rotation, and was T1 last block as well.
Blood is a solid T2, with most of it's meta relevant cards being immediately available from the event structure deck.
Forest is T3
The other classes are trending out of being teir 1 previously.
----------
Beginner tips:
Pick ONE class to start with. The sheer amount of resources given to new players can allow them to build any meta relevant deck if they know what they're doing.
Meta rotations give every class their time in the sun, but that also means other classes are mediocre/bad by comparison while that's happening.
Classes trend in and out in groups. Rotation is 1:1 in terms of expansions in and expansions out. So, one expansion might have really good cards for 2 or 3 of the classes that have been underperforming, while having mediocre cards for the dominating classes until the rotation breaks some of their power plays. Then the classes that have been getting support become meta, rinse repeat.
Progression is pretty much:
Pick meta relevant class (Blood is easy as piss right now)
Get rid of everything else for vials(crafting material)
Pimp that class out.
Start building a collection after the next rotation. That way, you have recent meta relevant cards that last longer, and can pick up another class as it starts to gain traction.
Have fun, good luck!
