With the advent of the report cheater button, how do the developers know that a person was actually cheating, or if a player is just butthurt because they got spanked? What is to stop you from getting banned or suspended just because you have an exceptional game?

What is to stop you from getting banned or suspended just because you have an exceptional game? My guess is they're looking at your hanger and your stats which they have available. If your stats fall in line with your hanger, you're probably good. Hackers/cheaters have ridiculous stats compared to their hangers. It shouldn't be too challenging to do this. The problem I see is how it's done. If done by hand, this could become challenging and a time waste/suck for Plarium that could be better spent doing game improvements. If it's automated (even partially so) then it's that's awesome! As an example, I have a good friend who's an ex-War Robots power player. We played in BoT together too. Fantastically skilled player and he just started in MA a few weeks ago. He's already been reported. lol. He's still playing though. He looks like he's cheating because the noobs he's playing against don't have the skills yet that he aquired in previous games. He's also spent a little money to get some fun bots and setups. I haven't heard of anyone I know being booted or punished...but I don't hang around cheaters either. lol

I'll ask my guy. I'm an angel, so I never once considered that I'd be reported. lol

Hopefully there is a automated way to at least eliminate the ones that are obviously just good players.

From what I understand, and note this is speculation but based on something I can't seem to remember, they don't look at just scores. They have all the data on every match, most likely temporarily stored in an easily accessed location for a few days before being archived. But I would bet that there is a way to add up damage done/received and compare with potential total damage output from the gear each person has. If there is something that doesn't add up, it will trip whatever trigger is used. There may be a human component to verify positives once the algorithms do the algorithming... but not sure on that.
