First response was supposed to be the question, my bad.

Well... to the first part of the question...
Depends if you like Ares and the tank-style of play. If you do, then go for it. Another thing to consider is, do you lone wolf it often? Ares cannot survive on it's own if you lone wolf it. It's made to be a team mech and when it leads a charge or cover a retreat, it's amazing. Especially if it's got a couple of light mechs like a JR Shadow or a MD supporting it.
If you do lone wolf with an Ares, better to slap a pair of LA10s on it as it is an amazing sniper and counter sniper. Keep leveling to max and you can slap original Thanos build on it: LA8/RG16.
I voted no because I don't think MR8/RM12 is a good build for the Ares. CB12/PC8 would be better.

I run a couple CB10s on it and play it somewhat cautiously, pushing only when I know I have support and using the sheild and myself to draw fire or protect the team so that we all move forward together. It's incredibly effective. The CB10s let me be effective with cover fire or lighter peppering from a distance. It's a good tank and I appreciate that it's the fastest one. I can run an entire CPC game with it against AI and a typical result is top mech spot with 8-10 kills and 2-4 beacons. Not bad for a single bot The weapons combo is not ideal. I rarely (if ever) advicate for combining different range builds.

I have it on my Guardian now, but I feel the need to step out into the open to unload it, and am exposed. I do play a lot with friends, and will charge the middle with Ares often, so he would be missed in that roll. Panther is one of my pushers as well. Where does everyone put there RM12's?

Ares is not the mech for mortars. If you don't have R5 pulse 8/ MR8 and Carb 12/Stasis 12(R5), there's no reason to rush.
I'd honestly wait for the MR12 release to see if it's reasonable. Carb 8+12 or MR 8+12 are the weapon sets that will(may) let 6.1 Ares shine.
With the shield mechanic change, I'd say Ares is the better platform for Carbs, while Juggernaut, with it's temp shield, would be better for MR. But that's min-max. Either or can use either or.

I have to disagree a little, Koalabear ... Mine is 6.1, and it holds its own, many times while on its own, with a pair of CB 10s. Once it's maxed, with a pair of CB 12s, or the new MR 12s, it would rock socks. Tube Socks, even. But yes it's def a good sniper. But it's brawl, too... I've had some good games with Arc 10 + CB 10, Arc 10 + MR 8, and Arc 10 x2, as well. It's beefy, has a good shield mechanic now, and just fast enough to not feel too sluggish. On tight maps or chokepoints in big maps, both, it's a big ol Greek God of fun!
EDIT, forgot to refresh the screen before posting... lol... y'all already moved passed this lol.
I have my RM 12 on Guardian with RG on the other side. If I am squadding and we are trying to drop against them or custom games, I may leave it like that, or I may load up both RM 12s on the Killshot. Until I max my Guardian, though, it will most likely live there.

at 6.1, Ares is a good sniper platform. It's also good w/ carbines, or carbine arc10 hybrid

At this hot moment RMs are on the shelf as I try Thanos builds LA/RG on Panther and Guardian. Depending on how that goes today, I may put RG/RM12 back on Panther. Advil showed me this build in a match we fought. Very good build on many maps. To answer OPs poll I said No. There are better builds for Ares as has been said. I'm also a bit cranky about RM12s today after getting clobbered by a high end team with at least 3 RM mechs. Even though I use it at times.

I find the Ares is a good tank now and prefer it over the Jugg with the shield now not being on a clock. Big HP boost when you rank up to 6. With 20EN it is great with dual LA10s. I like to first fire off one LA then go to the other one as I can be available more to shoot and the overheat chance will kick in with shots still to do resulting in more damage overall. The shield is great blocking enemy SB, TL, carbine, and a shot or two from LAs when looking down a long corridor like in the middle of the moon map. It is my end game to have this mech maxed with Carbine 12s on it.
Note the achievements for the mech. LA, MR, and carbines are the weapon-centric achievements with the Carbine damage one giving the most points.

See, I like that RM + RG build on my Guardian, with the Thanos on the Panther.
Why? Panther's ability is better for taking and controlling beacons... and I want full direct fire, not indirect mortar fire, for those situations. Especially Center. I start with that build on CPC, especially if solo, and head directly to center and stake my claim on the CB. When it's only AI on the Red side, it's almost a guaranteed success.
Just a few mins ago... stayed in the Panther the whole game:
I prefer the RM RG build on the Guardian because of the lack of defensive ability. I use the both the RG and the RM to kill crippled mechs, the RM to flush people out from cover, and drop shields, and the RG to bring em down, after the RM volley, if needed. The Guardian does have its ability, but that won't protect you like the Panther's fence will when getting hammered while holding CB... and I HAVE to be able to stand on that beacon while taking fire in order to get it right at the start of the match.
They both work and I am sure there are pluses for doing it the other way... but that ^ is what I have experienced.

To add to this.... Jugg is a better Mortar platform, too. Especially for countering Red Mortars since the shield is full-body.
Have a clan mate that swears by a maxed Jug with 2 x RM 12s.
He tends to find builds that are just enough different from META to make folk ask him if they work. This one isn't too outlandish, but it's still very rare to see, and he cleans up with it. I'd def run that, or RM 12 x2 BH if I had either option, available.

Not that many maxed out Juggs from what I have seen with any loadout personally.

I would be a muppet like Mayer and put Mortars on Brickhouse. Just got roflstomped while defending a CP? Drop in Mortar Brickhouse, nuke the CP from across the map, then eject to hop into something faster.

"Nuke em from Home Beacon... it's the only way to be sure..." paraphrased...
It's definitely a viable set-up for either mode when squadding... I assume for solo too.

Ok, to sum up everyone's impressions....I think we're all saying:
Ranking up the Ares is a good idea.
MR8/RM12 is a bad idea.
Plenty of other build ideas here, but personally, with 20EN to play with, I'd aim for dual LA10, or PC8/CB12, or even MR8/CB12 for max versatility.
