So how does it work exactly. Game says at the optimal range, your weapon deals more damage but how much more?

Wow. In one of redfiends guide I'm prrtty sure it's where you have a chance to deal double damage. Outdated. It's something else. Server time works on 5 ticks per second, weapons that fire at 300 or 600Rpm can hit two projectiles in a single server tick. That makes the damage displayed on screen look like double damage, when in reality, it's displaying 2x damage for the 2 "hits" counted in between server ticks. Weapons that fire in groupings also run into this, like with Javelins seeming to display only 2-3 damage numbers despite firing 4-6 projectiles, and Carbines displaying only 3 numbers for their 5 round burst, where the first number is 1 bullet, and the second/third display larger numbers for counting 2-3 hits.
