Credit to Koalabear for inspiring this thread with an introspective post on my introduction to the forum thread. That was a while ago yes, but I did not forget about it and finally am sitting down to make this thread!
So rather than discussing tactics or hard numbers of equipment, I thought it would be fun to ask a simple yet thought-provoking question: What is your favorite “era” of War Robots? The game has went through many phases and metas, and most of us on here have been playing for a long time, so we all have been part of the game’s rich history. Which era of that history was your favorite, be it because of the meta, community interactions, or something more personal to you? I have broken the history of War Robots down into several distinct eras so provide some simplification and uniformity for the poll, and feel free to read them if you need a refresher on your War Robots history:
Pre-Knights of Camelot era (before August 2016): An extremely old and primitive era of War Robots, back when it was Walking War Robots! There were only the classic silver and gold robots and weapons, and a bit later came the workshop, which only had Rhino, Stalker, and a little later Carnage for robots and Taran, Magnum, and Trebuchet for weapons. ECU was the go-to physical shield, and Ancile was added later on.
Knights of Camelot/Fury/Griffin era (August 2016-August 2017): During this time, the developers would become a lot more active with game development, giving the growing player base plenty of new content to try out. The Knights of Camelot released, as did additional robots and weapons for the workshop. Later on in the era, some maps were reworked for better balance, and the Moon map was released, and the hallmark Beacon Rush, the game’s first alternate game mode, was also released. This era would see the emergence of a defined meta, with builds like the Ancilot, Trident Fury, and Death Button Griffin gaining notoriety, enough for some to want them to be nerfed.
Dash/Stealth era (August 2017-August 2018): With Pixonic being bought by Mail.ru, game development skyrocketed, with more numerous and more complex updates being added than ever before. Many of these robots would be meta-defining robots and weapons, such as the Korean Dash Robots and the Inquisitor and Spectre, as well as the Scourge and Shocktrain weapons. This aslo marked an ideological shift in Pixonic, where new content would appeal more to the higher-end players than the general audience, which generated a lot of controversy, since it meant these powerful new items were difficult to obtain. Other notable additions during this time were the game modes Team Death Match and King of the Hill, as well as the Valley and Rome maps.
Pre-Pantheon/4.3 Balance Update era (August 2018-December 2018): This era may be short, but was absolutely packed with game- changing updates. Update 4.0 brought Mander and Weyland, repair robots that were like nothing that came before, 4.2 reworked the workshop to what it is today, and 4.3 nerfed all the most powerful equipment and buffed underperforming equipment. As a result, the previous meta was completely uprooted and the game saw that most variety in the top leagues it had seen in a long time, with all players now able to obtain newer equipment much more easily and there no longer being a handful of builds that definitively were the best.
Pantheon/Ao Jun/Invader era (December 2018-September 2019): This era’s biggest notes were its robots as well as the addition of modules. Modules were game-changing of course, granting robots better stats or new abilities previously unheard of, and quickly developed a meta of their own, most notably with the Last Stand module. The Pantheon robots and Invader began this era’s meta, with Ares and Hades capable of dealing tremendous amounts of damage under the cover of their absorber shields and Invader being neigh indestructible. Ao Jun was introduced some time later, quickly becoming infamous for its dangerous combination of damage, burst speed, and stealth.
Titan/Phase Shift/Shotgun era (September 2019-September 2020): While pilots had an impact just like modules did, the biggest additions to the game were titans and the new active modules. Titans, with their supreme durability and firepower, were able to trump normal robots and easily sway the tide of battle, especially for the super-tank Arthur and the damage monster Ao Ming. Meanwhile, the Phase Shift active module granted exceptional survivability, a trait that the robot Ranana would get as its ability, making both a top pick for normal robots. Other notable robots include Nightingale, an elusive support robot, Leech, which had a brief reign as number one before titans became all the buzz, and the introduction of Hawk and Scorpion near the end of the era. As for weapons, shotguns became the go-to for brawls thanks to their damage and quick reloads, particularly Halo, Corona, and Storm, though nerfs would eventually undo them.
Drone/Tank/Status Effect era (September 2020-present): The modern era stands out for two things: drones and the specialization of robots. Gone are the universal robots like Ares or Spectre that could perform well in any role, as instead robots are now purpose-built for one specific role in battle. Typhoon and Jaeger for range, Shell and Fenrir for tanks, Hawk and Ao Jun for titan busting, Scorpion and Ravana for ambushers, Fafnir and Loki for scouts, and Demeter for support. Drones enhanced this, as they themselves could be built to compliment any robot and enhance it more than pilots or even active modules could. Titans, while still prominent, have lost the dominace they once had due to the new capabilities of normal robots, particularly against titans. New modules like Cloaking Unit and Jump Unit furthered the possible abilities available to robots even more. And finally, for weapons, the proliferation of weapons able to apply lock-down, freeze, and other status, either through drones or themselves, means damage is now only half of what makes a gunfight.
Well, history lesson over! I tried to make sure my dates and descriptions were accurate, sorry if I missed something, I am only human! So now that your memories have been jogged, which of these eras was your favorite, your “golden age of War Robots” if I will? Hopefully I evoked some nostalgia with this, and please do not take this super seriously, it is meant to be a fun discussion and a sort of War Robots retrospective. I bet a lot of people will gravitate towards one specific era (take a guess which), but I await to hear everyone’s favorite era and why it appeals to them!
I figured this discussion is not complete without masterpiece that is the old War Robots hangar music, so here it is to help set the mood!
