So I always have this thought of unlocking ares in favor of my jugg which I sometimes find to be slow. How does the two compare? Should I just focus on my Jugg or Get the Ares.

Jugg is a beast when it comes to raw health and brawn. Good brawler.
Ares has the foot speed to be a great assault mech, especially when it’s shield is up. My missile rack 8 Ares is my second drop.

They are very comparable... but different, nonetheless.
Basically... Jugs is Solo Tank Goodness with some monster HP. Shield is strong, 360 degrees, and not on a timer (if you aren't hit, it stays up). Status effects do apply through a Juggy's shield. Jugs is slightly slower than Ares.
Ares is a team bot... can lead a charge and protect more than itself. Can protect against Javs if they aren't too high of an angle, and even if they are, if you angle up and face them it will block most, if not all, of them. Slightly faster than Jugs. Shield is strong, but on a timer. Even if you don't take a hit it goes away after a certain amount of time. Status effects are blocked by the shield.
I would say I see more end-game Juggs... but with the right setup an end-game Ares could do well. Still, my thoughts are that if you are conserving resources for other gear, Ares is NOT required. It is a preference and while very strong mid game, will not stand out once you are looking at "META" end-game hangars. Again, though, it is still a tough bot once R5 +, and, especially with Sniper weapons, can still make trouble for reds. If you like it, it will suffice. But if you want the "best" gear, Juggy will do just fine as a tank that you can pretty much leave at R5 and then decide later if you want to Max it. I have ended up putting both my tanks in the rotating slot in my hangar and use them mainly for tasks or testing builds. Guardian becomes a tanky 「illegitimate child」 once leveled, so it has taken the dedicated role. With 24 en, it's much more effective. Play style is different though, so I am not calling it a tank... but it serves as a strong replacement for that role that allows me to keep both support and high damage options, along with some tankiness, open, all in one bot.

At R5, the Jug actually has more HP than the Brickhouse. It is a beast and is so hard to take down solo. My next goal is to get both CB8 and CB10 for it for the times I put my Jugg in the field.
For the tank role, in my opinion, the Jugg is the better overall tank when compared to Ares. The shield regenerates much faster and the slightly slower foot speed isn't that big a deal. You can even use the Jugg as a sniper/counter sniper but in this role, the Ares is slightly better.
If the Jugg could get a buff to 20EN and can carry dual CB10, then it would be an awesome mech, but it might be a bit OP at that point.

Juggernaut is the more reliable tank for using it as a brawler tank. Ares' shield timer gets added onto the cooldown timer if it goes down, making it a bit less consistent, it's also got a longer base cooldown for it's shield at 15s. Ares isn't effected by Stasis beam and thermal lance attacks that hit it's shield, while Juggernaut still suffers buildup with it's shield up. Ares can still get punked by Javelins and Mortars with it's shield up. Ares can guard allies, and it's shield has more HP overall. Whether that additional shield HP is worth the downsides is a personal choice.
I would say Ares is a better mech for coordinated play, while Juggernaut is the goat regardless of how it's used.
