Ive always wondered since i got my first pilot, do pilots have any use except for skills. Maybe they help your targeting system do better? At first glance, that sounds like what a "Pilot" should be doing.

Guidance Operator increases targeting speed and Gunsmith skills increase damage which could indirectly describe the effects of a skilled pilot. GO could be the gunfighter quick draw and Gunsmith is just hitting the target more often to cause more damage.

Also speedshooter (kinetic guns get into accelerated mode faster) and sharpshooter (increased accuracy) skills directly affect weapons performance, thought, not all weapons have those skills available.

The targeting mess isnât a bug in War Robots, to them itâs a feature. âYou want shoot enemy in front of you? Nyet, you shoot bot behind wall while enemy pummel you.â âWe choose target.â Remember: âYou donât play game in Russia. In Russia, game play you.â

Pilots implies that they control your robot for you automatically. Well, they have modules which enhance bot capability. Adding Pilots was a way to further monetize the game by adding something else to collect and upgrade and it is similar to other first person shooter games where you have a character which does the killing; both distancing yourself from the killing and humanizing the mechs. I imagine if the view was from in the driver’s seat, there might not have been room for pilots, but we’re just watching (and remote piloting in RL) in terms of the battle. Pilots are our Avatars with each one customized for each bot. It takes a twist of imagination. Just 3 years ago there were no Pilots, Modules, Titans or Drones. We were called pilots by the War Robots devs, now they call us Commanders.

The answer, my friend, is that pilots were Pixos first salvo of “levels of power” added to the game to greatly monetize War Robots even more. I believe, with modules, power cells-aka green crack-did not make the $$$ Pix wanted/expected. Pilots came next, and now? Drones! Can anyone say VISA???
