Picture this.
It’s ME. I’m sitting in my room... CHILLIN, and I load up. Minecraft.
Keep in mind I still haven’t killed a blaze so at this point I’m just kinda wandering around procrastinating until I can kill a blaze and finally start brewing potions before I start grinding diamonds and eventually killing the end dragon.
So I’m sitting in my room, and I’m playing Minecraft..
I die in the nether, (I have keep inventory on because I die every other minute it seems)
I die in the nether to a crowd of zombie pigmen after accidentally hitting one while playing baseball with a ghast and getting mobbed and dying. So I decide to explore, I run in a straight line away from my base to a mountain range I know, its not as impressive as the Shattered Savana I live in but still pretty damn cool. Then I take my boat and start sailing down the river, I find a swamp. I love the way swamps look, I explore that in my boat. And continue down the river, the sun is setting now. And then some of that classic calming Minecraft music starts playing. And I understand even more why this game is so popular.
I am rowing a tiny boat down a winding stream, flanked by mountains, impossible cliffs and beautiful forests. With this music that sounds about as chill as a man in a pool of liquid nitrogen with dry ice floating in it in the middle of the Antarctic in January, I have magic armor that protects me from getting hurt. Boots that keep me from dying of fall damage, a magic pickaxe that won’t break. TWO magical swords, one that deals extra damage to Skeltons and one that deals extra damage to literally everything, and the sun is setting.
How is that not appealing?
Even coming off of the sorrowful death of my cat Mr. Food by falling into a pit of lava, even though it seems silly I just felt….. serene. I felt like I was this hero in a tale, whisked away to some magical land. And the villagers of the many villages situated around my home way high up carved into a mountain told stories of a man who came through every now and then looking to trade, one that wore armor that protected him from harm and wielded a sword two times as sharp as any the blacksmith had any made.
I know its silly but still, how is that not appealing?
I’m sitting here thinking about this, and I die to a zombie. No big deal. I spawn back into my house, the room high up in one of the many twisting spires of the shattered Savana I live in. And I stop and think, the furnace is smelting some iron I forgot to smelt when I mined it. My white bed is right next to a large window overlooking a desert with some really cool generation, so I go and look at the desert then go up to my enchanting room. Its a work in progress, I still need to get all the books for Max level enchants, once I do get them it’ll look really cool, the enchanting table is right in front of a large nether portal, and the room is made out of stone lined with netherrack and lit with magma blocks. Overall a really cool atmosphere, and I feel like a dark wizard enchanting powerful weapons of legend in that room.
Once again, how is that not appealing?
I find myself asking this question, Minecraft is a game that appeals to so many people, and with the modding community. Anything is possible, and if Mojang listened to people like Whitelight, the game could become something that would never die. But even as it is, the game is beautiful in its simplicity. And that’s why its’ appealing. It doesn't demand you hurry, never demands you take any action. Its a game anybody can enjoy at their own pace, and that is one of the great achievements of the game, that is why I think of it as a Magnum Opus. This is why Minecraft is the foundation of so many childhoods and even some lives. And why I am glad it is now part of mine.
