Yikes... this is tough.
For me it would either be one of the tanks or the Guardian... I'd be leaning towards the Guardian. Possibly switching it and the Zep out, back and forth, as needed.
But... if you find either the Jug or the Ares feels like too much Tank more often than not, then one of them would be just as good of an option IMO.
Panther and KS are permanent in my book.

I was narrowing down to the Ares and the Guardian because the Guardian is slow af, and the other is another tank. Wondering if its too much to have similar abilities in the Guardian and the Zephyr at the same time. Definitely agree that Panther and Killshot are locks. Hell, they might get second copies later.

TBH, I change my hangar out as the whim hits... I like variety and will typically rotate bots in and out. For the most part, I keep both tanks, the Panther, and KS, and use the other slot to rotate other bots in and out. SOMETIMES I'll trade out a tank... but I use both of them a lot in Tourney, which is where I spend most of my time. (Hence why I am just now getting close to Div 2.)
In CPC, I think I am more inclined to get rid of one tank and leave Guardian in... having a Zep and a Guardian can open up some good tactical options... but even then it's not a hard and fast rule for me.

Ya I guess I'll switch them in and out for a try. I do have dreams of running the Ares with Carbines, something about that set up feels like Rambo and all the other action films I grew up with lol.....frick yaaaaaah

PC 8 on Jugs and Carb 8 on Ares... but I've been trying this out lately:
So far, I like it better than keeping like weapons, together.

oooh those are sweet set ups! I take it you get the extended fire of the PC8s and the accuracy of the Carbines

oooh those are sweet set ups! I can't say it's better in every situation, but it definitely gives me some versatility while still filling the Sustained Damage Tank role.
EDIT for your EDIT... yes it's a good mix... and reloads don't always match up so I have a better chance of not going without something firing.

Haha .., this is kinda exactly why I don’t have a Zephyr in my immediate plans - there’s nothing in my active hangar I want to take out, and Zephyr doesn’t really fill any glaring holes that ranking up what I have wouldn’t fill. Same deal with Shadow. I know everything I’m running might not be end-game worthy, but who knows how much things might change between now and the forever it’s gonna take me to get to that point. There’s already too much stuff between weapons and mechs that need resources well beyond what I’ve got on hand, so why add something that’s going to spread them even thinner.

It fills a hole you don't even know you have! (why does that sound bad when I say it out loud...) But back to mechtout's original question. The easy swap is to swap out a tank because the weapons energy is the same as they're all medium mechs. Still, you'd still be able to put the MR8s on the Zephyr from the Guardian. I'm partial to the more interesting special abilities and so I'd ditch a tank, but that's just me. I agree with ⓣⓡⓘⓒⓚⓨ48, the panther and KS are staples for me. Honestly though, you'll probably swap them all out depending on the map/battle type. For yesterday's map, my top 2 performers were the Zephyr and Guardian and my Ares didn't see the light of day. For a more open map, my Guardian might not make an appearance. It just depends. 2 tanks in CPC is hard to argue with though, especially when the enemy is always higher leveled than you. Probably best to decide based on the situation. It's nice to have options though!

with less than 2000 XP to go......Who doesn't make it into the Zephyr era? Oh, and you might want to spend a few hours opening some of those silver crates bud...lol

with less than 2000 XP to go......Who doesn't make it into the Zephyr era? the way you rock'd that KS earlier today, he should definitely stay in top 5 spaces. Maybe drop Juggs or Ares.

with less than 2000 XP to go......Who doesn't make it into the Zephyr era? When I got my Zephyr, the first mech I dropped was the Guardian. Abilities are similar but the Zephyr's faster foot speed gives it a bit of a chance to escape tanks it doesn't kill, and the faster cool down means I have a chance of taking out the tank if I can get to cover. Then, when I fell in love with the Shadow with SG4, I took out the Ares. So far, I'm finding my current set up to be more fun, and in tough games, I last just as long as I did before. I'm currently holding out to rank up my Shadow so that I can run MR6 on it for CPC games and SG4 for early Tournament games.
