Ok, ok.... I made another mistake...but I have extenuating circumstances and just needed a bit of retail therapy. So, I picked up the MR6 even though I'd previously decided not to, and have counseled others from getting it too. I'm now in a position to take a closer look at these two with actual play experience.
Almost everything I'd imagined for the MR6 is pretty much true. It's like a smaller MR8, not quite as powerful and actually unloads the 5 rockets in about the same amount of time that the MR8 unloads it's 6 rockets. This means that the MR6 has a slightly slowly firing rate. At first, the rockets appeared to be faster than the MR8 too, but I think that's just my imagination.
MR6 > RPG6
So, where the MR6 is better than the RPG6 is in the following areas:
- alpha strike means that you press the button once and then focus on keeping your crosshairs on the target; when using RPG6, my thumb often comes off the red button and I stop firing at critical times.
- bigger splash
- bigger damage per rocket and more overall damage per magazine
- alpha strike also makes it easier to alternate left/right weapon fire
- fewer rockets than RPG6 means slightly less exposure - not much, but we know that the slightest error in this game can kill your mech
RPG6 > MR6
Where the RPG6 is better than the MR6 is as follows:
- faster projectile speed to hit the running mechs - I've wasted entire magazines of MR6 whereas with the RPG6, I have a better hit chance and the ability to simply stop firing and wait for a better shot
- easier to get blueprints and you get it much earlier in the game so that by the time you pick up the MR6, your PRG6 is pretty much on par with it
- better chance to hit at further range
- better reload speed
Ultimately, is it worth getting the MR6? Well, that depends. I certainly won't tell people to prioritize it, but I do think it's worth it to get eventually. The reason is because of Tournament. There are some Tournament maps that cancel out the effectiveness of the Javs, so having another direct fire high DPS rocket weapon toting mech is a plus, especially when the games get tougher and you end up actually using more than a couple of mechs in your hangar. Which mech you put it on depends greatly on your playstyle. For example, I'd originally thought that putting it on the Panther is better because the Killshot already has a third weapon so the slight lower damage of the RPG6 is fine on the Killshot. But, after using the MR6 on the Panther for a few days, I think I'm leaning towards putting the MR6 on the Killshot instead. With the KS's faster speed, and lack of defense, it's better to just sneak up on your target, unleash a double alpha strike and then Melee Dash to finish off the target. The Panther, with it's Stasis Field, can make better use of the RPG6's standoff attributes better. Ultimately, if/when I ever get my Shadow to R5 and can use 2 MR6's, I believe that will be my goal.
So, for folks who are still in early stages of the game, I'd pass on the MR6 and just get the MR8. When they go on "sale" for real money, they're the same price anyway. But, if you need another high DPS weapon, or just prefer the MR's style better, then go for it.
