As you can see from Linearblades schnitzel post, we uncovered that a mod from a long ways back brought in someone named pillow of doom as a vtsf (volunteer staff) to help during a difficult period of time when someone was trolling the forum with massive gore posting. The responsibility of the mass deletion regretfully falls upon the shoulders of your current moderators, because it is our responsibility to consider these possibilities and take security measures, including the removal of inactive vtsf. So we want to apologize for not being more thorough in this matter. Not that it is any excuse for such a blunder, but when year after year things roll along just fine and we have all sorts going on in life, it is easy to be to relaxed about important responsibilities.
At the moment (9:25am pst), we have been investigating the situation and examining admin controls and options to try preventing things like this from happening, and we are in dialogue with proboards trying to see if we can have the data restored. As soon as we have firm conclusions, we will inform you.
So please accept our apology for the mishap, and our gratitude for your patience, continued participation here, and your kind efforts to lend a hand.
🙏🏻

Ok, I'm speaking for myself here. You mods are doing good job for free here(or so you convinced me and it's not your fault posts got deleted, hence no apologies needed. You haven't deleted those posts, have you... And I think we're all doing just fine without outdated information, people are still here, and that's what counts. Go forum!

乃ㄥ卂乙 thanks. But even though we didn’t do the deletion, that deletion was only possible because of a lack of follow through in our security protocols. One of my clients lost 2 weeks worth of cancer research data to hackers because of a lack of follow through on one particular protocol by an IT guy. You can’t say it was the hackers fault when it was the IT guy whose responsibility it was to prevent it. As for loss of info being no big deal, even though we continue, not only was there a lot of useful recent information there put together with a lot of time and effort, there is interest in keeping an archive of the entire history of War Robots and there are plenty of people who access that vintage information. So we definitely don’t take the loss lightly. Nevertheless I agree, we carry on with our friendships and benefiting from our current work in the forum. ✌🏻

Bummer, probably half the questions I asked about weapons and robots on Google Search came back referencing posts on this board. I hope some of those are cached by Google.

linearblade that’s the thing, it was not a hack. The guy was given vtsf access a long time ago and we hadn’t removed that status. So he had access to the killswitch. The thing we are looking into now is how to limit the abilities of vtsf should we need that help again. Thx for following up on this stuff

I appreciate this website. I especially appreciate the job that all the mods do.
I had been a gaming server admin for almost 10 yrs. Dealing with the problems as a mod can suck. I once screwed up an update. Myself and the senior mods were trying to figure out what or how things went wrong. To cut it short. The admin at the server farm had to do a reformat and reinstall. So myself, and hopefully others don't expect y'all to be perfect. The situation of lost knowledge always sucks. But, can be rebuilt.

I second 乃ㄥ卂乙. Unless you guys eat sleep and drink this stuff, it’s not likely you’d have known that ability even existed for VTSF. Hell, I was one and I didn’t even know I had it. So, some information got lost; if it was really useful and still relevant, it will make its way back here one way or another. The forum is still operational, and active members are still active, and that’s what’s important - the community will continue to thrive. To my knowledge nobody is pointing a finger of blame at anybody except the one who actually did it. And call me a sentimental old fool, but I’d even go out on a limb and suggest it almost seems to have brought the community just a little closer together. Apology not accepted.

I was just...checking NexusBlade 's post history, and then I got to September, and it hit me: wait, I souldn't be able to see this.
Awesome guys! Thanks goes to all of you for making this happen and to ProBoards for being understanding and helping us despite their strict rules!

Guess I'm popular now, lol. On a serious note, it's great to have everything back, A lot of history I would hate to see simply deleted.

Thank you again so much for bringing this back but just want to inform you in case you don’t know that the search function doesn’t seem to identify anything before the event. I was trying to find a year old post of mine about “Loki speed” but only a handful of recent posts with Loki and Speed came back. I managed to find it with a site specific duck duck go search though.

This would be b/c it's a backend thing. Looks like when they restored our old posts, they either didn't reindex them (Elasticsearch), or it's actually happening right now in the background and the job hasn't been completed yet

Great the forum got restored! Hopefully this will never happened again.
Let’s tighten down, limit and restrict Admin access and roles. Ensure that you all have complex passwords. Also, any way to have routine backups?

No wonder you have all these likes, ѻﻭɼﻉ. We can appreciate your admitting a mistake and fixing it, along with all the work you do in general voluntarily. Thank you very much. I believe I speak for everyone when I say "No hard feelings, things happen, keep up the good work," anything positive about your work that comes to mind.
