It seems I only play one to two bots each match, sometimes going to three. Would love to add the fourth slot to bring in my killshot and have some options. Any downside to opening up the fourth slot, such as much tougher opponents? or even worse much tougher ai opponents with their spot on aiming?

I opened the fourth slot, but I can’t say for sure if it’s done anything to the level of my opponents. I swap bots in and out a bit and watch my hangar strength go up and down, and I have not noticed any kind of correlation between that and difficulty of opponents. Quite the opposite, in fact - I see great variations in the makeup of both teams when I don’t touch my hangar at all. The big benefit is, it just gives you a little better choice of options in each battle, map and enemy team.

I did. It's not as if adding a bot costs you any further resources. But I do value the extra flexibility it brings. And I haven't seen a change in opponentns.
Put in a Paragon upgraded to 2*, with Javelins. Gives me 2 RPG bots (Panther/Killshot) as go-to mechs, and Juggernaut as sturdy allrounder. But the Jav build is great on some maps too. I wouldn't know which one to take out there. Especially as the Jug will soon be able to run energy 6 weapons too...

Any downside to opening up the fourth slot, such as much tougher opponents? or even worse much tougher ai opponents with their spot on aiming? Focus on getting 3 bots up to speed. Resources are scarce until you can reliably farm professional+ tournaments. Theres a big with MM that makes AI stupid strong at the moment too, so extending in-match time might not fare very well at the moment. Once your core hangar is rank 4 you're generally safe. The roles listed on the bots do a fairly good job of describing how they should be played: Scout(Lancer, Shadow, Killshot): Evasive opportunists, flanking, beacon capping, and keeping priority targets "detected" for allies is the priority. Unlike War Robots and other clones, there's fog of war. Bots don't show on the minimap, or to allies, unless someone has eyes on them. If you have AI or players on your team using Rocket Mortars or Javelins, they can't target enemies that aren't in sight of allies. Support(MD, Cheetah, Zephyr): You're basically tailing allied Tanks or Attackers. Either Healing(MD), or crapping out mines(Cheetah) to keep your allied fatbois in the fight. Zephyr will become a must have when it's unlocked, as it's ability is the strongest in the game. It does get riggedy wrecked when it's ability isn't live, and all the AI snipers will have you as priority 1. Tank(Ares, Juggernaut, Brickhouse): You're the point man. Tank doesn't mean invincible, smart cover and abusing shield abilities is key to staying alive. AI support bots are kinda trash at sticking around you, but if you stick with allied MDs the enemy will have to teamshot you to actually get rid of you. Attacker(Paragon, Guardian, Panther): Main weapons platforms, but squishy when they push out too far by themselves. Use allied fatbois for cover and lay down whatever firepower you're packing on whatever your allies are shooting. Stick with a scout, attacker, and tank for now. Once MM is fixed, then think about adding another bot.

Sorry this isn't clear to me. Does adding the 4th hangar increase the strength of opponents? I'd like it too for flexibility, but will hold off if it penalizes me. Most of my bots are 2 and 3 stars.

No, adding bots to your hangar, stronger bots, and/or stronger weapons doesn't affect matchmaking on it's own. If you start winning more matches because of the extra bot, instead of just being able to do well with what you have, the MM will put you against stronger enemies for ~winning~ more. The AI only uses 3-4 bot hangars, so while their hangar strength might be similar to yours, they might have that total strength on less bots, and seem stronger.

Yes, I'm sure some of the AI Juggs are 4* - they just soak up damage and come back all T-800 like. Long gone are the days my Ares could stand in the open blatting wildly without scratching its paintwork

Pretty much everything is out of one-shot range, both giving and receiving.
