Since I rolled 3 good skills on my Lance trying to get ghost (armor, physical shield, and mechanic), I was trying to level it up from 21 to 31... Played 5 rounds, won every single one I think... Barely moved the EXP bar.
What gives? Does everyone just use gold? Like 「whiskey tango foxtrot」.
I never took a pilot past 21 so I wouldn't know. 5 hangars and stuff.

You earn points by playing the mech the pilot is in. When it levels up, you pay more gold for a higher rank and an additional skill.

How much would it cost to force it up? And another thing... Is ghost active 100% from level 31? Or do I need to cap it at 40 to get full effect?

I used both Au and playing so I can't give you a good answer... but I did notice that it takes a lot more to get anywhere past 20... as well. I don't know what drives the EXP gain but if it is HPs, then Boosters may be the answer.

It should give you an indication where it shows the level progression of the skill... what percentage does it show next to the "Retrain" button? IF it is 50% then it is already maxed.

There is a bar underneath the skills that grow stronger as your pilot gains exp, like Roadhog.

Here's hoping I don't get energy shield expert or some ?dookie? and feel like going to 50... Arggghh Probably just spend the 1k when I get there. But I only have like 4500 and 2500 is reserved for Basil. So I don't know if I can get it this second.

If you get Physical Shield Expert at Corporal rank will cost, in terms of experience, the same as it would when the pilot is a Sargent. We pay more so they can get multiple skills. It does take time. Frustrating. I don’t take my pilots past Captain. Paying 5k for that extra skill? Can’t afford that....wish they would give THAT as a gift in Special Delivery or Operations, instead of outdated weapons.

To level pilots reasonably fast you either need to get top honour frequently, or cycle matches fast; the latter can be more efficient (but tedious, and is more like grinding than playing), whereas the former is more fun but harder to pull off consistently. You earn points by playing the mech the pilot is in. When it levels up, you pay more gold for a higher rank and an additional skill. Just to clarify: the last time I checked you only need the pilot in your active hangar, you don't actually need to field the mech to get the pilot experience. Often enough I'll only use 3 or 4 mechs per match, mech #5 doesn't get fielded that much, so I use it to level unspecialised pilots.

If so, did you find out from play testing or have you seen it mentioned somewhere? Genuine question because that seems contradictory to the amount of EXP my pilots get.

From my own testing, I am sure. It is how I levelled the Adrian pilot I had that I didn't want to commit to a bot, so I swapped him with my Weyland pilot (that was already maxed to his promotion) as I rarely get chance to deploy Weyland, and I wanted to test the quickest method to level pilots (quick games vs top scorer). This was a few months ago mind, so I can't guarantee it still works, but it definitely has worked for me - as Adrian levelled up just as fast as another pilot I was actively using in my first drop bot. As long as the pilot is assigned to a bot that is in the hangar you are using for that match it should receive experience even if not fielded; assuming Pix haven't changed it.

Just play and try not to think about it. It helps to remember that even though you have a new skill, the robot is still as good as it was before you promoted and got a new skill. Patience and save your gold. It gets expensive after the first 2 levels. Exp earned is 10% of honor earned (I don't know if Premium affects that though and I have it, so...). I've got a couple pilots moving to level 60. It's just ponderously slow. If you play it right, your better, more essential skills will be achieved earlier and later skill will just be cherries on top. Good luck!

Ok thanks deadeye that helps a lot. My max honor doesn't get much past 2k so no wonder it took 5 battles to get maybe 100 exp.
Also worth noting I don't need to operate the Lance to get the exp, even though I like piloting it. It was sitting in my long range hangar and that hardly ever gets used... So I swapped out Scourge Ancile Quizo in the meantime.
Now all we need is a level by level chart for exp and what the gold conversion is..
I understand after 1500 gold for the 4th skill it jumps up to 2500 for 5th. So all the more reason to just cash in the 1k and skip the 50 randoms... In all likelihood I'll see something else I like and the cycle starts over again...
I'm really tired of feeling like I have to grind for something. After I get these Tempests and basil I'm over it.

It is 350 oxp per level from 21 to 30, right? If you are making 15 oxp per game it is 23 games or so. Reads like normal. Wait for the rank of captain. I have 5 pilots at lvl50 now, and it took me two months or so on average to go from 41 to 50.

All pilots in any bot in a hanger fielded in a round get the same amount of pilot experience. Pilot does not even need to be in a bot or have weapons for which the pilot has skills for. It does not matter, they will get the XP. So, if you have a high level bot you want to field for additional damage and can go without its main pilot, you can put in a pilot with skills set for another bot and/or weapon and they will still get XP. You just have to have the pilot in the right bot and weapons when promoting the pilot as that determines which skills are available.

At the 5000 mark, it does get slow...tho 2500 isn’t fast.
Still, it has struck me now fast the whole ranking/skills acquisition has gone, not how slow (until I made a Major to add Armor Expert to my Tyr). The whole pilot thing still seems new.

Just ignore it until you get the notification that the Pilot is ready for promotion.

But when I went for ghost it restructured the whole build. Even at lv9, with an armor booster Lance has 195k HP... The shield is quite strong with the finished shield expert. The Ancile is only 75k at lv8...I'd love to put some fortifiers on it but so would Bulwark like those.. and that's 2x 2500 gold plus upgrades. I need like 500M Ag because I never did basic modules and I need 50 of them!
