Been thinking about why my Hover is still able to compete in such an insane meta. Ao Jun, Leech, Fenrir, etc.
Hover is the only bot that can easily reach the high ground. Ao Jun and dragons are on rails. Spiders crawl ability is too hard. Maybe Invader but that's too hard.
Here's my Top 5 reasons why High Ground for Hover is OP.
1. Better than stealth. Nobody notices me up there.
2. Better than any shield. Use roof as cover.
3. Surprise. Seriously, no land bots will consider the 3rd dimension. I can just fly over the obstacle and get ya hiding there.
4. Higher high ground than Ao Jun. Targeting system will not look up that high or lose lock/focus.
5. Confusion. They cannot find me if I'm above them. Targeting system only works when they are looking in my direction. But if I am right above their head, they need to search 360 degrees to find me.

And when they finally notice that they are getting zapped by something they can neither evade nor reach it’s too late.

And when they finally notice that they are getting zapped by something they can neither evade nor reach it’s too late. I'm trying to stay away from talking about skill, of either the Hover pilot or complacent reds. They do factor in, but I want to talk about the game mechanics of it. I mean, everyone understands why stealth is powerful, why the God shield is OP, why Leech is so strong, etc. Not many people understand why the high ground is powerful (it's become a meme), but I want to talk about the ingame reasons that pertain to War Robots. The main catalyst is why the Ao Jun is inferior to the Hover, and why does the Hover benefit because it's standing on ground that's 2 feet higher than the Ao Jun (well flying/standing depending). In a way, this makes Hover one of those high skill ceiling bots (literally and figuratively). I admit most players will find the Ao Jun a better bot, but the Hover can do so much more. I'm not even talking about the skill it takes to do the "Tickle Your Toes" maneuver with the Hover, just skim an object while in the air and land and hit the ground running. Much harder skill to master than the Super Dash when that was first discovered. But i'm digressing. I'd like to see more bots that take advantage of the high ground. Not ones on rails like the Ao Jun or AQ. That's why the Hover is unique and other flying bots like the Raven can't do the same things. I also think unique bots are really hard to fight against, but i didn't add that as one of the reasons. It's possible in the future there will be a new bot released that takes advantage of the high ground, and it's very popular. So this post isn't meant to be about skill or the Hover, and more about the high ground.

I love my Hover and it does have some distinct advantages to it. But I'd agree that a big part of it is that it's underpowered and reds don't feel any ticking clock to destroy you before your ability recharges. I run pulsar/marquess on mine and unless I present an easy/quick target, a lot of enemies will pass me over at first. Then at some point they do finally notice and start really hunting me down.
Running Tarans likely contributes to the effect as well. Especially since it doesn't have any lockdown capability that enemies have to worry about. Before the Taran nerf I ran them on my Spectre and despite all the firepower, I'd get overlooked a lot. Wrecked a lot of reds thanks to that.

The fixed weapons physics partially offsets high ground advantage....
In real life, you would add another 50-100m range to guns and rockets fired from above...and they would hit the thinnest armor on a vehicle....in this game, if you fire a VORTEX at 349m and your target backs up to 350.01m, you miss...and you don't even scorch the paint. Give the HOVER a range boost while in flight. (Rockets/guns)
For that matter...reduce the range of flame weps fired downward. Heat rises and should dissipate over distance...jmo...

So what are some of the best maps and locations to take the high ground on? ;-) There's so many, it's ridiculous. Some of the worst maps is where I found some great strategies for the Hover like on Moon, SF, or Yam. Some of the "best" ones are starting to get overused, so you lose the advantage of surprise and if another red Hover takes your spot. I find that it's just up to your imagination. I've been piloting the Hover for 1.5 years now, and i'm discovering lots of new spots and ways to use the Hover in the last few weeks/months. The best thing is to always come up with a new spot, so I don't become predictable. Some basic ones that I first started using. On carrier, those tall towers near CB. Jump straight up and hit any red trying to get CB. Shenzhen, get on top of the blue building. But there are tall buildings everywhere! I haven't explored every nook and cranny yet. Valley, get on top of the temple in the middle of the map. There are a lot of levels up there, and different places to hide. Star Destroyer. Pretty obvious, get on top of the dang ship. Once you get spotted, the jig is up and reds will be hunting you now that you've annoyed them. That's why it pays to have lots of other spots. Plus the more you discover, the more kills you'll get. It's the not so obvious places where i can use my hover ability, that's where i can outplay someone like a Leech. That's when my Hover bot switched from a weak or mediocre bot into a powerful bot.

Give the HOVER a range boost while in flight. (Rockets/guns) For that matter...reduce the range of flame weps fired downward. Heat rises and should dissipate over distance...jmo... Exactly, this is what I'm talking about. In terms of physics, the high altitude of the Hover can make more of the Vortex or Aphid class of weps hit their target, but I don't use these weps. Same with Hydras and other missiles. If you use a splash wep, then it's possible to dmg a red hiding behind cover. For line of sight weps, the higher you can go, the better angles that's possible. The closer that red is hugging the wall, the higher up the Hover will need to go. (making the hover a better choice than the Ao Jun) For partial cover or low cover, if a red is hugging it. Same thing, the Hover will need to go higher up depending on how high that wall is. (again making hover the better choice than Ao Jun) I'm not sure how distance is measured in this game. Whether it includes the 3rd dimension in its calculation. I do know weapon placements on a bot matter. But it's only 1m difference. Rhino has its medium weps further back, and Griffin has them mounted more forward giving it a 1 meter advantage. Not a big deal in most cases, unless you're playing a cat-and-mouse game with someone really skilled. Anyway, i agree that real world weps have a range advantage for high ground. But there's also no gravity, i mean there is. But it doesn't affect projectiles for some reason. So that's a plus. Another advantage of taking the highest ground, you just travel faster that way. There's nothing blocking your way, so it's like an airplane flying at 35000 feet. Ao Jun and other low orbit flyers got lots of stuff blocking them. But i know some of the land speeders can match or do better, like the Strider or getting some super dashes off. But only on straight line paths.

The most impressive thing I've seen a Hover do is avoid a point blank attack from me by going straight up. My bot's targeting system couldn't even process it.
I've gotten up pretty high in Shenzen with my Raven. It's trickier than with the Hover because you don't have quite as much fine control over the thrusters, but then again, Raven seems to go faster on its flying arcs.

I was a big hover advocate when they were initially released. There was a lot of potential in that bot at the beginning and after subsequent buffs, it's nice to see its viability in Champions League. I'll dust it off every now and then when I'm looking for a fun ride. What's your loadout for the bot? last one I ran was a spark/pulsar, spark/scourge or aphid/vortex (despite the nerfed hitboxes).

Scourge/spark is the one and only setup for Hover. Pulsar/Marquess or Vortex/Aphid are fun, but don’t give you quite the same on target damage output at maximum agility. Hover’s strengths are agility and durability in a package that’s cheap to level up (especially OE). These attributes are best complemented with modules and pilot skills that emphasize health and speed. BTW ground speed also very noticeably transforms the momentum you get after hitting the ability button. I honestly think the whole higher ground discussion might be overrated though. IMO the Hover’s ability to get to places no other bot can (and getting there fast) are more important than flying higher than the Ao Jun.

OP? The hover is cannon fodder in champ league and has been for a while. I've seen that too.... But given that there seems to be an outspoken contingent of HOVER pilots...I will concede that I haven't fought against skilled HOVER pilots. Then again... even if it's an easy kill...if he's killed 2-3 bots before getting smoked, who's to say it isn't a viable platform. I can't tell his kill count on the field. I get the fewest kills in my ARES....but I expect that. I use him to take on 2-4 reds. I'm not expecting to survive....just stop an advance or tie down 2-4 reds while my team gains a better position. Yep...they got an easy kill...and laughed at my "princess bot"....but they took damage and were stuck in place for 20-60 seconds. And I have respawned at the new beacon we captured.... (Not bragging or recommending this play style...you REALLY have to count on your team for it to work and you rarely score well.) Whatever fruits your loops...I will keep killing HOVERs that cross my sights...if he's made kills before that, well, he's now stopped. If he accomplished what he wanted to do, I was too late.

You do know theres is a better hover in the workshop. It has the same hp, about 3 times the amount of firepower and it has stealth, oh and its better looking. Oh and it flies faster...
Im sorry you can be the best hover pilot but ill still laugh and slaugther you in a fight because its a hover with tarans lol. Its fun but its not a very good bot. I sold mine like 4 years ago.
If you really wanna be useful hover run vortexes with aphids mk2 them and slap on shieldbreaker.

And Hover is much faster and thus more survivable on the ground. As to speed....Ao Jun may be a touch faster going in a straight line but Hover is still fast when gliding over the ground. I dont use hover at the moment because I like Fenrirs and do use Ao Jun as my beacon capper with two heavy weapons. But I am going to bust out my Hover later as a Griffin kicked butt in Valley yesterday with Vortexes/Aphids and I want to try other locations on other maps. One-hitting reds is so Fun! ;-)

I've been hit by plenty of vortex hovers, and while it hurts they die quick for their effort. Hover is a joke in this meta. Period. As far as comparing it to the Ao Jun...hover is only better at one thing. Giving me silver.

I dont strive for the lofty premises of High Level Champion or Legendary, though that could change. I play lower level Champ and enjoy it. That includes taking out grounded AJs and the newly vulnerable Ares Purple Power Rangers. I have Hover in my Hangar today to help get the 50 event coins for capping beacons. He will rain damage and destruction on many a bot. But my goal will still be those coins, not to play meta. I dont have any Mk2 12 a anything but I suspect even a Mk2 12 Hover and weapons might not do as well in High Champs as my Hover does now. Though it would have the SB now. :-) So Hover is not meta probably, but it is a valuable bot everwhere else. ( Except FF? Idk I dont play that lately).
