I'm a relative novice on the bass, the instrument I love. I've been learning through Rocksmith 2014. I bought an acoustic bass today, I've spend the evening drinking bourbon and playing Tom Petty songs, and I think I'm in love.
Who are the musicians of the forum?

I play the guitar, almost 60 years, have played the bass, and the violin maybe last 10 years. Played drums for awhile, but found it much easier to lug the guitar around.?
Edit: And no you may not call it a fiddle. ?

Pick a little on the guitar and bass, tickle the keys a little, but I AM a drummer. Gimme a good bassist to play with and I'm happy.

ŞĆĦŇIŦŽ€Ł that is the next thing I want to try is a Viola. Fingers are getting old person syndrome, not near as nimble as they used to be. Or maybe a Cello.

I have always wanted to play the cello. Such a haunting sound. I saw a documentary of Yo-Yo Ma playing in old Roman prison catecombs. The sound and acoustics were incredible. So very dark like the catecombs

Drummer. Trained by a big band guy, fell in love with prog, but still have a thing for jazz fusion. I have a guitar, but that doesn't mean I can actually play it though.
I don't play any more though, wife, kids, house, mortgage, life... no time.

I play piano and I am the second chair violist in my school Pleaaaseeee don't ask me what a viola is A viola? You mean that thing that looks like a violin but is really just restringed, removing the E, and adding a C next to the G? I am glad you enjoy playing along with your fellow orchestra members. I wish you best of luck at getting first chair. Thankfully less people play viola in every orchestra, so it's not as competitive as the violin section.. ŞĆĦŇIŦŽ€Ł that is the next thing I want to try is a Viola. Fingers are getting old person syndrome, not near as nimble as they used to be. Or maybe a Cello. my original viola teacher is in his 60s, he's still playing viola. you can do it if you set your mind to it

Bass guitar and backing vocals in a good but unsuccessful alice cooper tribute band. Been playing bass for about 20 years. Dabble in classical guitar.

It's hard to get a gig too. Dancing to 9/8 apparently isn't easy (I'm severely dancing impaired) and if they women don't show up they guys usually don't either. There's still prog bands around, but most of them have gone real heavy to satisfy the masses and keep the band from living off of mac and cheese.

Piano since I was 6, mostly classical, but am trying to learn jazz, blues, rock, and country. Strictly amateur, but I'd say I have pretty serious skillz. I placed third in a piano competition once.
Trombone since high school (and yes, I was section leader in matching/symphonic band). Played bass trombone in the college jazz band. Played a little bit in a community college symphonic band (section leader, but of a tiny section), and later in a community big band (for which I received the only money I have ever gotten as a musician, a whopping $12 for a gig at a senior center). When clearing out stuff in our move to Texas in the wake of the financial crisis, an ex-girlfriend talked me into giving her the bass bore bone for her son to learn. But then my wife encouraged me to reclaim my original triggerless trombone from my parent's place this past Christmas, partially because she wants to learn how to compose for it.
I've been learning drumset for a bit. Picked up a cheapo set in high school and took a handful of lessons, took a few more jazz lessons in college, dropped it when my first few jobs out of school could only afford me an apartment and then a condo. Bought a more serious drumset four years ago when we bought a house and have been studying it more seriously ever since, mostly rock with some jazz. It is, by far, my favorite instrument.
And I also twiddle a bit on the electric bass guitar, synthesizers, and classical guitar. I even took a few voice lessons here (my wife is a trained classical singer and will also give me tips). Kids have definitely put a big crimp on how much I can play, as well as this dang game. I haven't played in a band yet, despite the music scene here in Austin, although I've jammed with a few guitarists.

Some of the prog metal is pretty good but most of it I'm not a big fan of. Too busy for the sake of being busy.
