Okay, made that jump to quad Aphids for my Patton as I mentioned a few posts ago. Been about a week or so and here are my thoughts on it.
I have them mounted on a 4 Patton and currently have them at 6/6/6/7. I've wanted Aphids since the first week I started playing. I really liked Spirals, but to this newbie, Aphids were whole new level of cool.
The day after I bought them I found out about the update to them so that was quite a bonus. I knew beforehand that they didn't have the range of the Spirals and that accuracy was lost a bit but I still wanted them.
Be aware that these are not your own personal nuke button. When they hit, they hit hard but that's the trick. A fast-moving box, you're probably not going to hit them at all. A moving medium, you might get a 20% strike. I'm moving heavy you might get 70% of your damage but that's depending on how slow it moves. But it's absolutely magic when you come across somebody just standing there firing and your missiles are just waiting to lock.
You can't fire madly with the Aphids. You have to pick your shot. It's great that the firing arc is higher now but I still feel that they don't have the turning radius of the Spirals and you need your target a little further away from a wall.
One trick that I kind of figured out and really like is that when you have someone targeted and they jump, you just wait till right before they land to fire. Then, you have that moment for your rockets to get there while they're paused from jumping.
Bottom line, Aphids need more skill than Spirals. I know I've still got a long way to go but at least I see the road ahead.

So, what do you recommend as good defense against them? Often by the time i recognize it, it's too late, but I'm getting better. It's seems like they are becoming favorites of the clubbers these days.

It's seems like they are becoming favorites of the clubbers these days. In my experience, 2 things come immediately to mind... 1.) Hug walls. Stay close to whatever is between you and the Bot firing Aphids at you. Sure a few leakers may get past, but overall the cover should eat the damage for you. 2.) Stay moving if you can. This is good advice in all aspects, but definitely if there are aphids flying about. If you are in a smaller bot this is going to be the best defense besides the wall hugging. In big bots, with the update making the pattern smaller right before impact, moving is the only way to make any of the salvo miss... but it is much harder to avoid them in a big, slow bot.

Exactly what comes to mind. Once you locate an Aphid you need cover and you need to keep moving. Those two things are your lifeblood as far as keeping out of ground zero with them. Let them shoot, then you have 10 seconds to displace and/or attack. Once you get to 8 seconds, make sure you're moving so that less missiles hit you.

This is the exact advice I'd give to an Aphid pilot, as well.
