Just finished up some Saturday morning practice with some of the honey badger folks some from black ops and others who I am failing to remember. Its always fun, even if you get your bum handed to you over and over
In chatting with Pilot DJ Rox who was instrumental in these games happening I realized a few things that have always irritated me about six pack discord may be much larger issues. Simply put the discord sever isn't being leveraged for the things discord is good at (real time chat) and is filled with things that are effectively noise on discord but instrumental to running the league. I chalk most of this up to organic evolution (it happens) and would like to recommend some changes with that in mind.
1. Start a Facebook Group for Six Pack. Why facebook? Why not here on the forum? Simply put FB has a lower bar to entry - you basically need it (FB) to participate in the league and I honestly can't say the same thing about a form account. *
- If this were to happen then things like "who's on a team", match results and challonge.com links could be pinned in a post on a month by month basis. It might even be possible to redirect this information into discord with a bot if people still wanted it in there.
- things like recruiting (and it isn't a real time activity for most of us) would be better served by a FB group and non real time comunication.
- The overall goal of this change is to reduce real time signal from non real time information that is vital to the function of six pack but amounts to noise.
2. Give android and IOS the same treatment as FB and AMZN on discord - group their remaining relevant channels together and let me mute the ones that don't apply to me with some degree of ease. Again, more signal less noise!
3. Make a major change to roles and voice on discord - This is tough to describe without doing it so I'll do my best to make it make sense.
- Create a role for team captain(s) (as some teams have more than one) - this role allows them to assign roles with lesser responsibility.
- Create a role with no special permissions for each team.
- Create a voice channel exclusive each team (team role + captains role).
The purpose of this is to encourage teams to use the 6 pack discord for voice. I know that there is often a fair bit of chaos on game day and when trying to get teams together to practice. This is exacerbated by the fact that we all congregate in different places. If we were able to use something that was shared for games and practice then life becomes easier. By restricting visitors to team captains (who should have sense enough NOT to drop in mid game) we can make setting these sorts of things up much less annoying and much easier.
Will all of this work? Maybe. I know that today there were quite a few of us from various locations gathered on the honey-badger discord server and we made it work - using the more public six pack server would only serve to create MORE traction for the league and we might have gone longer (3 hours already) if more players dropped in.
* Note: I hate facebook with an undying passion so for me to be saying "we should do this" should temper the suggestion to one of utility not desire.
