So, in a bid to see more diversity here's how you do it.
Custom paint jobs: Keep the custom paint jobs that exist and keep them coming. These are also base templates that can be altered as detailed below. They'll still cost an arm and a leg, but they're nice, pre-made templates of exceptional detail.
Regular paint jobs:
So you have a base template, say camouflage pattern, which, btw, I can't believe you guys haven't implemented for at least the patton. These would be less detailed than customs, but busy enough to be nice nonetheless. These patterns cost say 100 Au. Now you have in said pattern primary, secondary and possibly tertiary colors. Now you add paint colors. These both must be bought individualy for each bot. Each color can cost say 50-100 Au. Then apply. So you could have camouflage pattern in blues and blacks and grays, or traditional greens/tans, or alternative blues/winter style . Now everyone's bots can be different.
Using this method one could also change custom paint jobs, like blue hex on a griffin could be red hex, or black hex or whatever, and godawful schemes like the one available for the carnage could be tweaked to be more palateable.
You'd sell more gold, players could customize at a reasonable fee and the battlefield is much more diverse.

On the other hand, the pink camo that will inevitably appear under your scheme might truly be godawful.

And if I ever find myself in guerilla warfare in a cotton candy factory I'll be SOL.

Like it but also add a nice buff by adding speed or withstand more damage
