I went up against a Carnage with 2 Thunders in my Lance and I started taking damage. Was only him and I and I had a fresh bot and was squared up on him. The dmg was not insignificant either. I just played again and went up against a Fujin with 3 Tarans. Again I started taking damage from him. Is it the size of the bot that allows some damage through?
I've faced off against Gareths (not by choice) and their health doesn't move if their shield is up and I don't have rockets.

A lance shield only covers certain regions- and their body is huge. Thunders, molots and Punishers, due to their inaccuracy, sometimes hit unprotected parts of your body.

I accidentally slaughtered a Lance with a Thunder Carny due to being locked-on to another player behind him. The auto-aim appeared to elevate the angle of my thunders, combined with a slight high-ground advantage, to be just enough for about half of the flak to get above the Lance's shield. I'll bet he was super-pist too. I mention this only as a compelling example that shields can only do so much. I have also run circles around many heavy bots and shielded bots with both my Thunder Carny and Plasmahad and was able to shoot around their shields via sheer maneuverability.

As for Gareth, he can back pedal to avoid burst rockets like orks and pins. The rockets are triggered to explods at a set range when fired for each rocket. So when back pedaling the gareth will be gone from that spot the Rocket was set to explode and be safe. Gals can backpedal with shield on the side as well.

The Lancelot has the smallest shield coverage as a percentage of its top and frontal body compared to the other two Britbots. It also has a shield that significantly protrudes from the lower body of the bot - which is why Lancelots take full damage when you fire at them when you are below them. The best example of this when you are on the ground on Yamantau and a Lance us coming dowm either of the side ramps from the elevated paths and onto the center beacon --- easy kill for you as the gap between the body and shield leaves the Lance completely exposed.
The Lance is also hit on its wide top by any missile if the strike occurs and the Lance s moving in a forward direction. There s no defense to missiles hitting your top except by moving backwards (shield directly facing missile path) to the missile's approach path - any other direction of movement will result in a partial missile strike on the top.
Lastly, about the 2 scenarios you mentioned, both Thunder Carnage and Tri-Taran Fujin are 2 of the most potent setups you will normally meet --- not much as more DPM and both have an Ancile that makes killing them take longer if you aren't using plasma. In both scenarios, I can say that losing your Kanye shield and taking damage is a normal hazard, as these DPM of both targets is suffiecient to cause that much damage.

Thanks all for the info. Yes its important to stay squared up as much as possible but unless the faster bot gets right next to me (which they love to try) I can typically keep the shield facing them. As for the Gareth, my point was that if I don't have rockets and only Thunders, plasma, or bullet weapons, their health doesn't move. With rockets, I can dispatch them pretty easily.
Oh and I didn't lose the shield. I died with it still on which is worse.
Ill have to replace the thunder with an Ancile again I guess and try harder to stay in a group
