I've been playing this game since Dec 2016. Back then, it was all about the British bots. It was also before the League system came out, and "winning" wasn't that big of a deal. I started in a clan called Delta Force and left with 5 friends to start a new clan called wootWOOT. And then the League system started. It was super hard to grow the clan because "winning" became the only way to level up your league ranking. And players only wanted to run with the "winning" clans. It was like you couldn't even get a squad going unless it was 6 Champs. So, we all had to make it to Champ level to get into the wining circle. I tested in at Master level and made it to Champ though solo play in a month or two. I was running 2 lances and 3 Galahads, plasma and rockets. No range.
Right around this time, Aphids got nerfed. A player in our clan, SuperFly, introduced us to clans like Toolbreakers, LA and HEAT. Our clan resisted merges and focused on squadding with every clan that we could. Before the 3.2 update that brought component builds into the game, me and my clanmates were squadding with the best players and clans in the game. It was fun—really fun! I learned a ton from many players and clans in the game. I was primarily running just Rogs and Galahads at this point, but I did have 5 Lances and would run them if the squad wanted me to. I was not a Griffin pilot yet, but I still enjoyed them.
Then the 3.2 update hit. Dash bots crushed my Rogs and Galahads. Dash bots crushed my Lances. Running range wasn't effective either. It was highly aggravating facing Dash bots. I had saved up about 500M in silver in anticipation of the dash bot release. However, I refused to play roulette for them when they came out.
Day by day, the game was getting further and further unbalanced and unfair to play. The great Lance era was rapidly turning in the the OP component era. Even worse, the competitive Champ community got torn to shreds. Initially, players avoided squadding with other Dash pilots in hopes of not facing other dash bots squads. The early 3.2 era was NOTHING but getting trounced by a Dash bot spawn raid in every game on every map. Then, of the few players that could afford the Dash bots, Embers, Shocktrains and MK2, they left their long time clans to join the ranks of the already existing alpha clans in the game. This made the already hard to beat alpha clans impossible to beat. Players started playing Domination only in hopes to avoid the alpha kill squad clans. When that stopped working pilots just went back to the chaos of playing solo matches in efforts to face 2 dash pilots instead of 6. At this point, my friends list was dead and no one squadded up anymore. Squadding only matched you with dash/shocktrain kill squads. No one wanted to face that crap. At this point, MK2 Shocktrains had become THE meta of the game.
The message sent by Pixonic was, if you want to win, then you need to Pay for it. Many quit the game. My friends list became 80% inactive after 2-3 months of the 3.2 release. I was so disgusted with how Pixonic had released the new overpowered bots and weapons, that I decided to run in the opposite direction. I was determined to Brawl instead of shocktrain and to pilot gritty old Griffins instead of pretty little Dash bots. I already had 500M in silver, so I did the calculations to figure out how much silver I needed to MK2 a full hanger of Plasma and DB Griffins. I needed 1.1B silver. So, I played games until I earned it all. All in all, it took 6-7 months to save that much sliver. I actually sold off all my level 12 range weapons and about a dozen or more level 12 bots. I had a ton of Gold saved up as well, maybe 60K or so. When I hit 1.1B I MK2ed 3 Plasma Griffins and 2 DB Griffins. No money spent. Honestly, I was doing alright without the MK2, but the MK2 has certainly helped in face-offs with Dash bots.
So, just before our wootWOOT clan completely folded, we merged with a clan named RED. And then we merged with Arch. And then we almost merged with Atom. And then we almost merged with MARS. And then we settled and renamed to TRI?D []. We have Champ, Master, Expert and Diamond/Gold clans that you can join!
I don't think that there is much that is "fair" in this game right now, but I still enjoy playing it. I've learned a lot of "tricks-of-the-trade," and I hope to share all them with all of you. I hope to help empower all pilots to play better. I am unapologetic about only running short range griffins. I will continue to do so in the face of any new bot that Pix throws into this game. I will not run any anciles or shields. I will never run ANY component builds or range. I'm an old school brawler and I'm hard as hell to kill. I hope to keep the era of old-school brawling alive, even if I'm the only one. You're welcome.
I've been fortunate to learn from many other pilots in this game. Here is a little tribute to them. Sadly, many of them don't play this game after the 3.2 update. But here's to keeping history alive!
