Eh, I'm still playing, but I'm 'protesting' my own little way, in two steps (please note that this does not include my periodic f-bomb-laden contact rants to Pix).
1, I'm done spending RM. I was never anything close to a whale, as I've probably only spent a tad over $100 total on this game since I started playing it earlier this year. Some of that was straight on gold, but most was in special offers that included bots or weapons that I wanted combined with gold at a great price. But even that won't be enough to part me with another cent now, unless they decide to offer something ridiculous like 10K Au for $1.99. No more money. If I can't grind it out, I'll do without.
2, If things get really bad competition-wise, like the game gets totally overrun with maxed out dashes, inquisitors, scourges, embers, or whatever else they trot out for their next money grab and I can no longer compete or have fun with my no-more-pay hangar, I'll just stop playing. It's a marginal difference right now between the number of good, fun, competitive games and those that make my blood boil. I threaten to delete the app and shred my iPad and set myself on fire in the middle of the street, but then I'll have a few decent matches and remember why I still basically like this game. But when that fun/suckage ratio slides to the negative, well, that will be that. They'll have P2W'd me right into wasting time elsewhere.
Obviously some players have reached this point already, some haven't yet but inevitably will, and some will just keep grinding through it to the bitter end, whatever that is. And I applaud you.

All the above recommended great games. I would recommend Clash of Clans, friendly league system where you gain almost no profit from attacking Townhalls 3 levels lower than you. You can farm as much as you want in lower leagues for resources and upgrades (its even considered legit) or push to reach higher leagues for more rewards. You can also do no upgrades and just do battles/raids and clan wars for fun. (I used to connect twice a day to collect resources and do two war attacks twice a week) And above all the premium currency "gems", is collectible and achievable to all by doing events/tasks and just collecting trees All troops/heroes are open to all, just depends on your town hall level, and yes it takes years to max but its fun! Many years ago, in my school/University LAN, we played Doom1/2, Unreal tournament, Quake3Arena, Half-life, Counter-Strike, Starcraft1, Warcraft3/3, Age of empires1/2, Empire Earth, RedAlert2 and some Fifa2000 so on... A great PC games, I recommend is Starlancer and Freelancer
MMORPGs: Diablo2, MUonline and Runescape btw Any recommended f2p Android shooter games? (no robots) Yo! I noticed that you said Runescape. Do you play rs3 or 07?

Worms Armageddon on gog.com I played it quite a bit on n64. good campaign and challenging deathmatch against ai. Lots of cool weird weapons like exploding ming vase and bananas. Cows, sheep, earthquakes and so on. Multiplayer is where it really shines. Just be prepared for a steep learning curve.

I haven't played War Robots all weekend! I've been getting reacquainted with Galaxy on Fire 2 HD. It's like playing Privateer all over again. $12 bucks got me 1M credits to use in the game. With 1M credits, I was able to buy a decent ship, and kick 「bum-bum」 weapons that really helped move the game along in those painful first hours of any game. The game difficulty also ramps up relative to your ship so I'm not bored in combat situations. And the nice thing is that it's playable offline. So on the subway or anywhere else where you can't get a good signal, I can still be blasting, trading, mining my way through the game.

For Rogue-like I can recommend Sunless Sea, It's quite entertaining if you like lovecraftian horror and survival in the dark games. I got it for free so I'm not quite sure how expensive it is but considering it's quite indie I'm guessing it's cheap on Steam.
