For relatively new players with no gambling compulsion in low leagues, where the new bots and weapons are rarely seen, why should they rise in leagues at all? I feel that if anyone is happy with the competition he's facing, just stay where you are. Stop upgrading your most powerful bots and just bring the others to that level. It's a lot more fun playing against silver and gold bots when those are the only things available to you. Why would you want to avail yourself as target practice for the Korean bots and the soon to follow Brazilian bots and Iceland bots and Christmas Island bots etc?

Will those hotties come Brazilian-waxed? Anyhoos I support your notion of " Happy with the competition he's facing, just stay where you are" it's a nice catch. And some people would just want intense battles, even if you're gonna lose badly (like meself)

Staying in a lower league is possible as long as you don't win too often or start doing more damage than your league counterparts (gain to many league points). As you play more and become more skilled you will likely out-perform your league and be moved to a higher league where you will face opponents with much stronger robots and weapons.
There is a small gold incentive to finish in a higher League - but the amount is so small it's sad. Many players, myself included, have emailed Pix suggesting that silver winnings rise with league - but they have not implemented the suggestion.
The lack of other benefits is one of the reasons there are lots of tankers in the game and players choosing to play in the leavers queue. Many players in what used to be silver tier before the league system did not want to rise to gold/top/champion tier and intentionally stayed in silver tier. When the league system was implemented some of these players accepted the new system, some started tanking and others left the game completely.
So I guess my answer is: it is not in some non-gamblers interest to rise in League.
