Guess it make a pretty tough beacon runner I think so, I've been seeing rogatkas with Ecu as well.

What's the point? Gary's only real weakness is rockets, against which the ECU won't protect anyways.
I suppose if he likes to run straight into the thick of it, that could help? But he'll still die pretty quickly even from plasma, and if he was surrounded enough to need that then the enemy will retake whatever beacon he was looking for.
Or, perhaps he was just running a goofy experiment.

When one shield just won't do.

Well, it does mean that the Gareth can run down either flank and still have a shield while moving at top speed. With just its normal shield, it's easier to run down the right flank. Running backwards down a flank isn't usually a great plan, which is what you need to do if you want to run down the left flank and still have your shield in the way of stray shots. I prefer the extra weapon personally, but I might try an ECU sometime. (Currently using my only decent level ECU on a Griff with 2xPinatas and an Orkan.)

Don't forget... the ECU now has a LOT more hit-points in lower levels... With the prevalence and buffing of Bullet weapons and Hydras now... this may not be a bad idea for a Beacon capping focused player. Of course Rockets still hurt it... but usually when I run beacon grabbing runs in a Gary I do it mid or late game in areas that are not being paid attention to... Snipers, Bullet Banditos, Carny Sparky, and Hyda-holics are more of a threat at that point. To have two shields to rely on during the long trek across the Tundra of Yam or the Dry Riverbed or behind the Ridge on the farm side of SF, could make it worth losing the light weapon... especially since I don't want to engage anyone if I am in Beacon Rush... I want to turn their side beacon and respawn there in something better, or open the gates for my team, ASAP. So if I can just absorb damage and make it there, I am satisfied. Might just have to play around with that.

I've been seeing that a bit more often, is it legitimate?? Russel called for this a while back only with an Orkan on top. Seems like the ultimate 「i want to snuggle you」 build to harass beginning-of-the-game beacon cappers.

Yep, that was pretty while ago one of the experimental builds =) Also it's good for people who can't run backwards or sideways. Free tip: if you use common Gary - don't switch a shield to save your self from sniper ahead, tilt torso. You will keep your speed.

The Ecu feels more worth trying after that little buff, I wish they increased the HP in general, would be more worth trying.

Having thought a bit more about it, this seems like a great idea for a dedicated beacon runner. ECU Cossacks and twin-ECU stalkers have both been recommended as good uses of an ECU to me on another thread. The Gareth simply replaces jump/stealth with the ability to use a weapon at the same time, and move one of its shields.
Also, a Gareth with ECU+Hydra seems like a fun bot to run. You won't do much damage (still more damage than an ECU Cossack or twin-ECU stalker), but the range and indirect fire means that you can continually peck at reds as you run around capping beacons. And sooner or later, at least one of the reds will grow tired of annoying hydra salvos and attempt to chase you down. You might die, but if that red is chasing you around the map, he isn't attacking your teammates or focusing on beacons.

I strongly suggest using ECU\Hydra Gareth ONLY as a last bot (or at least second half of the match bot). 1) Very good speed could turn the tide of a battle (by capping beacons) 2) Armor protects you from the sniper fire (and snipers could be a problem sometimes) 3) Hydra help you pick off crippled enemies while you are out of reach (there would be A LOT of half-dead reds in second part of the match) While if you run such bot as a starting bot - you will be murdered by enemy splash beacon cappers with more firepower, and Hydra won't do much.
