I think the way I learnt a lot was by reading the forums, wiki and watching videos.
Tactics you can learn from any of the above sources but skill is only what you can apply (gained from practise and hard work).
When I use my bots each one has a role in my hanger and on the battlefield.
My Boa is for holding beacons and killing MagGeps.
My Pinata Gep is for capturing beacons, countering Aphids and harassing campers. Occasionally killing shielded bots.
My DB Golem is for ambushing and quickly killing heavies.
My Rocket Golem is for attacking knife fighters and for keeping people away from centre beacon.
Each bot having served his role is disposable, if the reason for pulling the bot out has disappeared then it's time to drop the bot (or aim for the nearest red beacon even if extremely dangerous).
Regardless of role I am always moving towards or defending a beacon.
I think the thing to remember is: Win the war not the Battle.
You need to learn to assess the battlefield and decide what will give your team the best return on your participation. Sometimes you'll be forced to hide under the bridge in Canyon for a few minutes to make sure the beacon stays yours and stops the enemy from turning it. Sometimes it's about using your last salvo to kill that Aphid Gep, even though another bot is ripping into you. Target the most dangerous opponent in your area and work with allies to take enemies down.

It's hard to be specific about how to directly improve without seeing you in battle, do you think you can upload a video of your play by any chance?
Here's a some simple rules to follow.
*Always target the biggest threat first
*Always move under cover, the only time you should be able to see an enemy or let them see you is when they are inside your attack range
*Don't let yourself come under fire by multiple enemies, try and separate them by using walls to cut them out of the fight
*What can you do right now that will help your team win the match?
