It's done by design. The MM will reach deep into the League system if no other Players ate available: i,e; in other Matches or offline.
I'm in Silver-I and it's just about every other Match for me ..

I'm in Diamond, and I have noticed more silver league players in my matches lately. I also fall in with a lot of Expert league players as well. Just the way the MM is functioning at the moment.

I'm in D 3... and many times I think I'm the only D 3. I'm either matched up with and against all D 2, D 1 and experts, or like tonight, with all silver and gold. Bizarreness.

Conventional wisdom tells us a few things: immediately after an update the MatchMaker (MM) goes crazy; since the game has now split in two, Domination Mode (?) and Beacon Rush, this may hold doubly true; and if you look closely at the matchups, you'll notice that if the game has had to reach to the extremes to fill the slots, it will sort of even out--a couple of Diamonds, a couple of Golds, a couple of Silvers. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I've noticed over the last 6 months; I've rarely/never seen all Diamond Reds against all Silver Blues or similar but that's just me.

That's a good point and theory and may help explain it happening on Android but I'm on iOS & I am D3 and I've noticed 2-3 silver players in over half my matches the last 3 days. Most, if not all, have been silver 1 though. I also get matched with a few experts but I never see a match with an expert and a silver player in the same. I've noticed it kind of rotates. I'll play 2-3 games where I'm the only Diamond player, rest are silver and gold. Then the next few are gold and diamond, next, diamond and expert with a gold or 2, then back to the beginning almost on a cyclic basis. I check everyone's rank after almost every game I play out of sheer curiosity.

You guys aren't on Beacon Rush yet? No. No update yet for iOS. You guys are our test dummies ? Has that always been the case (Android first) or does it vacillate?

No. No update yet for iOS. You guys are our test dummies ? Has that always been the case (Android first) or does it vacillate? From what I've heard, that seems to be the case but all I know for certain is this one and the last one (2.9.2) Actually, we never even got 2.9.2. You guys got it and then a couple weeks later we got 2.9.3. I know before that it was the update for the summer event, which we both got at the same time. Anything before those I'm not sure about. Someone else would be better to answer that.

This - thanks xXrobotrippinXx For the last couple of months the matchmaker has indeed been mixing the leagues. It seems if you're doing well then you can expect to get mixed in with leagues higher than you, and if your ranking slips too far, you'll see leagues lower than you. So if you're seeing players in higher leagues it is usually a sign that you're playing well or holding your ranking where you're at. Then you just have to endure enough beatdowns before you get matched up with easier opposition again. I personally find it frustrating as I'm in Expert and my Expert colleagues and I are constantly expected to compete against Master and Champion League players. I had to play against an entire clan of Champs yesterday and we were surgically annihilated. But such is the current matchmaker.

The MM ist a pain, really annoying. I do not care so much about league, but battling against 2 leagues higher makes no fun. It doesnt care if it is only one battle, but MM means to beat me down to whatever, this cannot be compensated by skills or good piloting, it is just pure massacre only. I wish real competition and not to loose because a software think I have to do so...

I agree it is done by design. I don't think it has anything to do with the number of players available. When "gold vs gold, silver vs silver" was a thing in MM, I was having a field day earning AU running a capping hanger. I could consistently keep my damage LOW and my win rate HIGH, and earn a ton of gold in the process. If I played 10 games I could win 6-7 of them and end up with 5 au for 5 of them. Now before you scream "clubbing" running a 9/8 hanger of all lights in android gold I is hard no matter how you cut it and is far from clubbing. I suspect that pix saw that some of us were finding a niche (and a profitable one). With the new league scoring mechanics they built a few non transparent values into the league system behind the scenes, and spent a bit of time tuning it to more evenly distribute rewards. The grind should be a grind, you should be seeing better geared players as an incentive to find the means to acquire better gear. Considering how things have gone so far, if you were pix would you be vocal about this sort of change? The odd part of this is that it was a massive slap to those of us who run "capping" yet I was the only one vocal about it. If you do this sort of match making you need to be careful about how you distribute teams, and how often you seed players UP or DOWN (you can't make someone the bottom dog 20 games in a row) and the system seems to have gotten better about NOT letting this happen.
