Since rockets now have to be treated like bullets, requiring a direct hit to have any effect (while some toolbag can spam missiles to your face without even having to see you...grrr) and my rocket aim is for poo-poo, I've decided to change my Leo load-out.
He's currently Thunder/Pinata, so I am considering either Thunder/Magnum or Thunder/Punishers.
I know that Magnums are considered superior to Punishers, but Magnums have always just felt so anemic to me. Even though their range makes them CQB weapons, they just don't have that punch close-up weapons should have. They're a drip drip drip of damage while the Punishers are a torrent.
Never having to reload is nice, and Punishers do have that irritating function of having to go empty before reload. Just not sure that gives Magnums enough advantage to make up for the weak bang.
Obviously, I'm leaning toward Punishers, but before I decide, I wanted to see what you guys think. Please note that I'm not looking for on-paper comparisons, but your opinions gained through actual gameplay experience.

If the damage change to shield goes live, I think you'll be happier with the punishers in the long term. I personally am not a fan of them, and they're far worse for corner shooting than magnums are. With all the recent damage buffs, I think they are a better fit to the playstyle you described as preferential. Leo in particular is a very good platform for them due to the large health and the ancile/shield stripping that the thunder is doing at the same range as punishers.
The reload on them can be advantageous in teaching you when to duck for cover, whereas magnums tend to lead you towards wanting to "finish a bot off" and getting you killed by staying in the open too long.

drake1588's advice is solid. If Punishers end up doing significant damage to shields, then I think they will be better than Magnums, and I expect to see them replace Magnums. Punishers have 150 extra range, do more damage close, and shred Anciles, and do bonus damage to physical shields? That makes them effective in so many more situations, and the Leo is a versatile Robot so that weapon is perfect for him. I don't like Magnums on Leo personally because you run into a Galahad, Rhino and Lancelot and you're just toast. With Pinatas, you've got a shot at taking them down.
Magnums do have an advantage in damage from 350m to ~150m and go thru energy shields, but I often feel it is better to break those Ancile shields, especially for a Leo so the the Thunder can get in on the action quicker and also so the nearest RBD can chip in. While Magnums also don't have a reload time, you often can't utilize the steady damage over time for a long time, so if you are smart about reloading under cover and managing your ammunition you'll do a lot more damage with Punishers than Magnums.
Punisher Leo could very well be an Ancilot destroyer, Ancilots shouldn't have enough damage to finish a Leo before the Leo finishes them. My Pinata/Thunder Leo is going to be loaded out with Punishers if the buff goes through.

Agree with drake1588 about the Punishers matching your playstyle, as punishers would've be more similar to Pinatas in terms of finding cover to reload and unleashing the beast once you've done so. Having said that, I'm in iOS Expert 2 and have run a Thunder Mag Leo ever since I started the game. It is my Ancilot destroyer and my go-to bot for full frontal assaults. My weapons are all lvl 10 and the bot lvl 11, so that probably helps. The Magnum may seem anaemia, but the Leo has enough HP for that drip drip to REALLY take effect. Furthermore, if you are careful to cornershoot plasma setups as they approach (even Galahad, you can save that Thunder to rearrange their face once they come round the corner. I hear the others about the Punishers though. I will be keeping a VERY close eye on how this update unfolds. I think it will become a REAL Ancilot destroyer. I typically never run Punisher setups, but I'm seriously coming around to the idea. That is until I realise, oh yeah, i have to lvl 3 weapons all the way from level 1. Sigh.....

I'm running a 9/9/9 Thunder/Punisher Leo for a couple of months now and since buffed it is a viable knife fighter with quite a punch. It looks cool, it sounds cool and it feels great to unload full clips into a the reds. At 300+ meters the Tempest feels like a very good replacement for the Thunder. Also successfully tested in 9/9/9. Both builds can do solid damage and they shred at point blank range.
