Fun game for a while, but new league is no fun

The lowest ranked person in the tier has way better stuff than me. Everyone in the tier does. I think I played too well in the lower tiers or something, for a while I was just murdering everyone (frequently got more damage than all other players combined), maybe that jumped me up too fast?

The molot's in the second bay are just something I'm trying for a second, still underpowered but I'm trying to setup a bot for better long-range tactics.

General advice for this situation is, play for beacons. Cossack is a good capper. Rog and Stalker are the best cappers. Gareth is still good capper even with all the rockets. Gepard is only barely worth it as a fast future Aphid (or maybe Gecko) platform, but Gareth is better Au investment. Then Rhino and Gala are heavier alternatives though they suffer greatly from current rocket bonanza. Golem is very fast to upgrade to level 9 (max speed) so is a viable alternative at this stage.

So if blues win, you probably get beacon gold. If blues lose, you will lose a lot of league points, and unless you really shine with beacon capping you will go down on leagues, which is probably good for you (and this is not tanking, as long as you are trying to win every game, get every beacon and honestly do as much damage as you can on top of it).

Also, it's event time so it's worse than usual. Tanker scum are roaming the lower leagues in hopes of completing the missions faster. It'll get better after the event, the nearly maxed hangars will move back up mostly.

(Assuming you haven't 5 slots already, there is also a debate about wether you should get bots or slots first. I'm of the minority opinion that having less slots, even just 3, will allow earning Au better under current league and MM system, and IMO time to get more slots is about when you have bots and weps of level 9 in existing slots. This is for those playing for free.)

Thanks for suggestions, will try grif out with punishers and leo with pins / thunder for now. All the guns you can buy with silver seem kinda terrible. The time required to play this game until I'm leveled up enough to enjoy it is longer than the time it would take me to recreate the entire game in Unity. Probably going go with option B.

TL;DR, RDB Griffin. Most weapons start to be decent around upgrade level 7-8.

Long version:

Tulus and pins are possibly the best weapons in the game right now. Well, Thunder is probably better. Pinatas aren't bad either. If you are in way over your head, Molots have the range to let you not bw wiped out by Tridents and Zeus. Punishers are also good, you just gotta get close and have enough time for them to spin up.

So, Tulu+Pin Griffin aka RDB Griffin is unarguably the best pure Ag bot.

Then bot Pin-Thunder and Pinata-Thunder and also Punisher-Thunder Leo is good.

Molot Griffin or maybe Molot Patton are good for staying alive extra long.

If you add WSP stuff, then PDB Griffin and Thunder Carnage are also meta bots. Magnum-Thunder Leo is good, as well as Pin-Trident Leo or Natasha, or Trident Carnage (but that's total 28000 WSP so will take a long time to get).

There are more, but above generally stand out.

Then, upgrading is a must. Weapon power increases faster than bot HP with upgrades. Most weaponst start to feel ok at upgrade level 7-8, and get better and better. I feel level 9 is sort of a sweet spot, compromise between power and upgrade cost. Maybe level 8 if you don't play a lot and may run out of silver. Level 10 if you play a lot. After that the Ag costs really skyrocket...

As a free player for 7 months (now I got Premium for the event, but that won't help my upgrades until after a month or two, when I would have run out otherwise), I disagree with this being P2W, or free players being cannon fodder.

I just don't see it.

Now don't get me wrong. The MM is... screwed up. But it isn't any more or less screwed up wether you pay or not.

Ultimately this is a game of skill, which I see very acutely in Android Diamond 2, where the bot and weapon level difference seems to shrink to majority of 9...11. Skill determines everything. Weapon power starts to be enough that everybody dies if they screw up (and I've learned enough to know I screw up much more than I myself realize... but still do ok most of the games).

I agree, it's a lot of work and if I didn't already have a multi-player lan/inet Android RPG shooter made, I probably wouldn't be so flippant about it.

However, I did already grind through that multi-month process, and now I can reuse that pretty effectively. Change some models from humans to robots, change some weapons from rifles to turrets... vastly simplify the terrain (mine allows you to explore multiple randomly generated planets), remove the randomly generated mazes / dungeons, remove RPG elements like equipment with magic effects, remove the mini-map, flying vehicles, mining for resources, etc. Basically what I already have is better than War Robots in many ways, so carving it back to the level they went with is a lot easier than building it from scratch.

You're right though, getting something release quality is easy to underestimate. My last client (last month I made him an Android "game" for a college experiment) put it well, the first 90% is easy, the last 10% is like another 90% by itself. That's fine, following War Robots as a template actually helps me out a lot, keeps me from making too many loose ends to tie up later.

As for the game being just as screwed up if you pay or not, I disagree there. If I had comparable equipment to the people I was being matched against, I'd (still) be taking peoples lunch money, or at least having fun trying. Instead, now I can't develop further because I'm in the wrong tier. I can barely get any kills because the people on my team wait for me to mostly kill someone, then they finish them off real quick and take the kill, which they shouldn't be able to do, imo. The way my game awards the player is based on how much damage each player did to the destroyed target, so if you did 10% of damage and I did 90%, it doesn't matter who actually killed the target, you get 10% of the reward and I get 90%. That's how War Robots should have done it, but there's a lot that's very wrong with this game, imo.

Otherwise, my existing game project (not finished but playable as is) is almost identical to War Robots in terms of camera vantage point, controls, targeting, etc. Although mine lets you switch to first person if you want, so you can aim a lot better... and some weapons have sniper scopes, etc. None of that in War Robots.

I just remade the Punisher weapons, now I'm going to make one of the robots to test out animations with.

The new tweak to the MM has everyone battling everyone. Every other Match is with Gold and Diamond - me and one other Silver. It's horrendous, actually.

You came during a strange time. I was in the Pixonic camp for a long time but it seems that the Developers have lost some foresight. Prior to your arrival L6 was perfect for Silver League. But since the latest Update the Player Pool has shrunk and Pixonic is trying to fill the gaps

I'd normally say, "Just keep plugging away" but I understand your position ..

Here's a typical couple of Matches for myself:

Bronze - Silver, Silver - Silver, Gold/Diamond - Silver (where myself and one other are the Silver).

I can handle Gold Players, not that difficult actually. But when you toss in four or five Diamonds, well let's just say, "Stuff on a rock."

Hey thanks everyone for the suggestions and encouragement. I think I'm about done with War Robots, but to be fair I was always just trying it out anyways. I like to try a lot of games and see what works and what doesn't as an influence for my work. War Robots stuck with me longer than most of these 'test outs' because I happen to love giant robot combat, I grew up on MechWarrior games, I watch Pacific Rim at least once a week, and I make my own robotics with a 3D printer/steppers/arduinos etc. 100% robot nerd here. So it was inevitable that I make a giant robot combat game anyways, and War Robots seems like a good starting point, if I remove the scammy stuff anyways.

So here's a pic of one of the guns so far, I'll probably get back into it at some point and touch up the texturing a little more but this is pretty much good enough for now.

First, sorry for the novel... I am a bit too wordy, I know... 

OK, now, my general response to the spirit of the thread, and not to anyone in particular is:

Well... I am firmly in the "skill trumps equipment" camp... and I believe that, so far, F2P is still the name of the game. Pix has done a good job of not letting it become P2W only... but they ARE teetering close to the edge.  That is why I am for a weapon/bot level cap for, at least Silver... maybe Gold.  No higher though.  (I am coming from Android perspective)

Whatever you or I or anyone else thinks, the game is playable with all free weapons/bots... but it may take a start-over with the skills learned from the first time for people to realize it. I can't tell you enough how well my lil 6/7 acct can do if I am on top of my game against 10s and 11s that reside in Android Silver.  It is surprising and oh so satisfying when you fight hard, damage or kill many bots, take beacons... then look at the results and you are 1st or 2nd... and they are in anything from 8/8 to 11 or 12!

I can forget I am in an "underpowered" bot and as long as I stick to these basic rules/skills that you should be learning in the lower level leagues:

*Keep your head on a swivel and be aware of both what your team is doing as well as the reds... you should never stop looking around unless directly engaged, and then as soon as there is a lull like when reloading or recharging shield, look around again, even if still in the battle!  Never get tunnel vision, or act like you and the Red are in a duel.

*Fire when a shot is there even if you are not fighting that bot... especially if he is engaged with your team-mate.  You can't do that, though, if you aren't doing the one above ^
 
*Lead your rocket shots - even level 6 or 7 DBs will kill bots, just takes a little longer for the 10s to die, but even they will feel the weight of a full DB salvo from a level 6!.  Same with RDB though you have to lead a little more carefully from longer range, but you do have a more forgiving splash radius.  Also, even Puns and Molots require leading if they are moving laterally across your screen... auto-aim and all.
 
*Speaking of splash... USE IT!  For low level players in high level matches, nothing is easier to use to cause damage and not receive it.  Especially if, again, you are running an RDB!  That splash is enough that you have a LOT of slack to work with hitting them around corners.
 
*Duck behind cover to reload!!!  IF splash bots on the Red side are after you, make sure you get deeper in cover than you think you should.

*This sorta pertains to the tip above and the tip below, but needs its own entry.  Reload weapons that don't auto-reload when you have any time to do so... Tarans, Punishers, etc.  If you have half a magazine... shoot a wall till empty and make it reload, if at all possible. 

*KNOW your bots.  KNOW your weapons.  Learn them.  Learn how to use them in all aspects.  Know what targets are better for what weapons.  Know how to counter the very same setups... both so you can defend against it, and use it against Reds that play the same.  If you learn this early, you will be a monster once you start getting 8/8 hangar levels.

*Don't travel lanes that snipers are covering if you do not have a shield.  Period. Use the terrain, or use a shielded teammate that is going the way you are... conga lines are applicable here... as long as you don't get into range of Splash builds while grouped up.

*Don't ignore beacons but don't go for one you cannot take without help if you are alone.  Team wins take teamwork.

And frankly, this is just scratching the surface of the skills/knowledge you need in order to compete with SKILLED people with the same gear, not to mention the ones with higher.  It works for both.  The only time you can just waltz into a fight without being as tactically aware and proficient as possible, shooting without worrying, spraying and praying, etc., is when you are in fights with people that are low in skill level. 


Now, games where I do well against much higher opponents are NOT guaranteed and it doesn't happen every game... but it DOES happen.  The point is that you won't always win, but you can surely improve the chances that you don't lose if you hone your fighting skills to an acute edge, no matter the situation.  Granted, I am obviously not referring to Champion level 12/12 bots in your Silver league games... but more when you encounter Silver players that are 12/12 or similar levels, either tankers or spenders.  Most times those players are NOT skilled.  Hence my point of Skill trumping Equipment. 

And Pix is even more-so pushing the F2P alternatives this Summer with the Ballistic weapon shield multiplier.  Add that to RDB builds, and you are going to have some fun, tactical matches if people are trying to play and win... Something that is a give or take situation during the Events since people are usually selfishly worried about their tasks.  As long as they are on the "win battles" task, all good... but kill and beacon tasks can cause some very anti-team like behavior. 

My approach is to treat every game as a win that is waiting for me to take it... stats, tasks, rewards be damned.  I might tweak my hangar a lil, depending on the task... but I am not playing the match to complete it.  I am playing to win the game with my team.  If more folk thought like that, the tasks will just complete themselves as you are going to be doing the things you need to in order to complete them, by playing to win. 

Anyway, this is just how I see it and take it for what it is... just another opinion that is 1 out of thousands...

I was so relieved when Aphid win quests were only 4 (of 6 kills each IIRC), the final quest was killing quest.

Of course then I stopped getting kills. Except when I am one kill short of current quest comoletion, then I get like 8 of 'em in the next battle.

Oh well. Now I have 4 Aphids. Aphid Patton! I wonder if I should do the upgrades for it. It's not exactly meta bot, and if era of Dashes and Scourges comes, it'll be even less so. Then again 4 Aphids connecting... Half of red HP gone... is it worth it? (Just rambling here, never mind me.)

I totally agree about worthless teammates. So it made me wonder... what if you could vote up/down your teammates after a match? Or... if people abuse the downvote (as I suspect they would), maybe only allow upvotes and only a limited number of them. That could be tied into the reward system too.

This is something I'm considering for my game, btw. I doubt Pixonic would implement something like that.

Other things I've considered adding would be one player training modes (versus bots), multiplayer co-op versus bots, and lob-sided matches like one level 10 / maxed out player versus 6 lower level players (maybe not that specifically but something along those lines).

I think it would be nice if there was a mini-map, and a reload button. Any other glaring omissions anyone would suggest I consider adding?
