If you had a friendly fire mode you would get hit by surprise before you could repay the favour.

Out of curiosity what were you running? Did you compete on beacons?

I'm looking for motive.

I have followed a player's bots around for an entire match blasting away in the hope they get the message.

LOL. He/she is probably still muttering profanities about me ruining their match. I'm guessing it made it hard to figure out when it was a red shooting at him through my constant barrage of fire. ?

After 30 seconds of constant shots in the back to myself and 2 other blue bots moving as a team, I got pissed. The player was just being an obnoxious arse at that point.

A lot of players don't appreciate the ammo wasting love taps.

IDK about any player who arbitrarily decides they "own" all the beacons...the thieves who steal them from another player, who might be slower, but earned it. I will actually slow down so they get there first.
There is no excuse for poor sportsmanship or the me,me,me mentality.

Save the shooting celebrations for the end when you've won.

Trolls exist in every game and in every tier. I suspect motive had less to do with anything in game than it did to just be a punk.

Likely Scenario (names just picked at random, no similarities to actual people are intended):

Justin and Brad get home from school at 3:00 pm, tired, and mad at their teacher for getting on to them when they laughed at a particularly loud fart that was released in class by a disliked classmate.  You know, the one that always does his work and is polite, but looks a little different?  Anyway, Justin feels he will get in a better mood after playing a spot of War Robots, so he grabs his tablet and sits down.

He joins a match, and sees, immediately, a bot that has garnered his attention for some reason he cannot, nor cares to, fathom.  The match starts, and Justin's hard, resolute face begins to split and soften into a smile.  He decides to follow that bot. 

"I bet he get's pissed off when I do this!" Justin says as 12 year old hormones begin to displace intelligence and common sense, making any sort of consideration, compassion, rational thinking, and/or logic, a moot point; as young Justin begins to shoot his fellow team mate, continually.  As he does this, he idly kicks random puppies that have found their way into his room, and considers the next round of house egging he and Brad have planned for after sunset.

As he contemplates those future activities, a realization of a reachable goal enters his mind and finds its way through all of the mire that the hormones have caused into his vocal chords and then out through his mouth,"Hey Brad! I've been shooting this guy for 3 minutes straight... how much you wanna bet I can make him rage quit?!"

This is just one likely possibility that I consider probable, after spending a very short time exploring multiplayer matches on XBOX live when I first got an XBOX.  Nothing seems to have changed since.  CoD, was the worst. 

Trolls galore + lack of a troll filter = the occasional Richard-head Stalker/Gep.

No they wouldn't

I ran into very similar situations twice in the last week...

Once, I was in my Orkan Cossack at the beginning of the match, I wait half a second to see where the other runners are headed, and then turn and head straight for the nearest beacon (which was otherwise being ignored).  Some guy on my team in a FrankenPatton starts shooting at me, and doesn't stop, even once I'm out of range.  No joke.  He was trying to shoot me through buildings.

The other time, I was in one of my Boa Brickthrowers making a bee-line for the front line.  The whole way there, a blue Destrier ran circles around me blasting me with his magnums.

Baffling.
