I would be ok with skins only being available for real money, but less then the current Au conversion. Options from .99 up to 9.99 and I would probably shell out.

#1 and 2 is what I look for the most in "Skinnerware", whatever that is supposed to mean.
And I do believe the most profitable games are the ones that successfully tap into addictive behavior or provide a triggered dopamine response. It's like being a Pavlov dog.
An example I like to use is a game I used to play called Rage of Bahamut. IMHO, that game was the near ultimate in my limited experience of skinnerware. Big events like Holy Wars, which were clan vs clan battles, were directly related to the number of resources you spent. And of course, you can buy resources. And all you really did was push a button. So you'd attack and win, get points, instant dopamine response, repeat. Out of resources? Buy more resources. But they made so much money the first year, it was insane.
Luckily, there was a way to be somewhat competitive as a free player, not through grinding, but through the trading market. I was able to somewhat play for fun, but nowhere near top.

Wow - $50-$100 per WEEK? That is ... well if it's worth it to you and you've got the $ more power to ya. What game was that? As I like to tell my wife: Women, gambling, booze, and drugs are all WAY more expensive and destructive vices so maybe she should be happy I just muck about with games on my iPad. At least I'm at home and very unlikely to contract a disease or gamble away our house. Lephty is that you? I played Blitz prior to coming here and would drop about $50 a month there. Here, I've dropped less than a $100 in the past 6 months. What I've discovered is that yes, the real world money spent will give you an advantage at the lower tiers but it's slight. It's offset by those players who've invested their time and energy levelling their bots and weapons up. As you rise higher in tiers, you'll really start to feel the pain unless you have a long term plan. Rush to lvl your bots to quickly and you'll be outclassed by those players with the wpn levels 2+ higher than yours. If you immediately unlock slots, you'll also feel the burn as you get outmatched by higher tier reds. Pixonic could make more money if they had better marketing or more impulse buying opptys but I notice they don't do this as often. A prime example is the recent Halloween event with the pumpkins. The pumpkins were a bonus currency that would allow you to unlock a free box once you had earned 10 pumpkins. Prizes ran the gamut from weapons to bots and included AU & AG gear. That made the impulse buys more appealing since you could in theory spend $2 and end up winning a $50 bot. Unlocking bot slots doesnt currently affect how MM places you. Honestly, the best way for new players to progress with the uncertainty of the new MM is keeping bot/weapon levels equal until the update drops. Pix has gone out of it's way to incentivise this without actually penalizing players (base level reductions + gradual gains per level). That, and most players will eventually hit the 10/10 wall of grinding hell.

Those looking for an intelligent, thoughtful and more cautionary take about the morality of freemium games would likely appreciate this recent post by Dr Richard Garfield, the inventor of Magic: the Gathering. www.facebook.com/notes/richard-garfield/a-game-players-manifesto/1049168888532667The short version is, he feels "whales" are exploited by the games they pay for, but makes a distinction between freemium and "skinnerware." Skinnerware is a more predatory game experience that looks to hook players by appealing to addictive behaviors. ... Thank you, I've been looking for that! I think War Robots dangerously skirts the line. I think it definitely has "speed ups": the option to speed up already-purchased upgrades by paying gold, especially since the game itself specifically recommends that the player purchase them. The advantage in multiplayer games is, I think fairly significant. The cap at Gold Tier is rather heartening, though.

We could ask the guy who blew $1 million on a game lol phandroid.com/2016/12/12/game-of-war-whale-spends-1-million/Seriously, I fall in cat3. I do not spend money on games if they are free. The only time I usually do so is to get rid of ads. I don't really look down on those who buy stuff. I think it more as a challenge and a chance to boost skills.

I would spend money on premium if it also offered a 50% bonus on gold you've earned. Otherwise, I've spent about $15 since I started playing 3 weeks ago, so I think that makes me a #2

Hey PJ! o7 iii
Agreed - the $5 Gepard with level 5 Pinatas deal was a great one, but now that I bought that I don't see anything of similar value. I'd pay $10-$20 for the same deal with a Gepard with 3x level 5 Aphids on it....

I fall into category #2 - mainly focused on the special offers that are occasionally made available. The intro Ag/Au offer and the Gep w/Pins were both good and I'd happily buy them again. Also picked up some of the weapons that have come up for sale.
I very much enjoy the game, despite its frustrations (though the 2.4 patch performance problems are testing my patience and goodwill), and I see spending money on it as a way of demonstrating my support and encouraging Pix to further develop the product.

I hadn't heard this but not surprised. Some friends tried to get me into GoW and I dabbled for a few weeks, then one of those cross world battles happened and people were teleporting all over the place to attack with a ridiculous sized armies. It was easy to see that GoW was gonna be a money pit so I quickly bailed on that thing.

Should be, you'll need to link it to the account that you use for the game I think.

Maybe I try this. If I can find that stupid Card... It's somewhere in my library, but that looks more like the labratory of an insane alchemist, these days...

Som'-biyatch...
"I believe it is time to send a message to game designers and publishers. As a game player I will not play or promote games that I believe are subsidizing free or inexpensive play with exploitation of addictive players. As a game designer I will no longer work with publishers that are trying to make my designs into skinnerware."
Dammit... I think this just put the final nail into the coffin of my willingness to play another freemium game on Android, "Magic Rush: Heroes". It's not as bad as most freemium-ware, I made it to "meta" levels before I finally caved and bought into "VIP3", to speed up grinding... Crap, they got me there. But what's really pissing me off about it is the rampant bullying by whales via the 'overworld' multi-player "kingdoms" map. And not just a few whales, the game has this huge alliance from China that can wipe out all the other alliances in the game. Certainly due to a core of whales. I'm tired of it.

Yeah, but I ate that kinda pill a very long time ago. I'm blessed with an addiction resistant brain chemistry, and have walked away from the usage of several illicit and addictive substances without too much long term harm done. I have *NEVER* "spent the rent money" on anything but rent. Using up valuable, critical resources on a non-productive activity is a sign that you might be addicted to that activity. These kinda games will never truly 'get' me, not like those whales, but this thread... I'm going to be a lot pickier from now on. So should anybody reading this.

Compared to game of war, this costs pretty much nothing. In GOW, people would drop several hundred dollars to buy packs (costs $100 each) just before a kill event to prep. And then again afterwards to replenish lost troops/power. That was insane to me and why I quit that one. I couldn't afford to compete. But, I have no qualms about spending money on games. When I played DAoC back in college, I was paying for 5 accounts at once so I could run my own groups. That seems cheap now-a-days compared to all the in-game-purchases that exist now and the pay-to-win/compete games there are today.
This game is great because it doesn't force you to pay anything. I bought the $5 Gepard deal and $1 worth of snowflakes to see how that went. Only 2 weeks into the game though. Only thing that sucks is when I get put in a game and there are lvl 30s with 5 Gepards maxed with Mags and aphids that just tear through everyone. But, at least matchmaking is going to get an overhaul soon. I can see myself buying some Au to maybe get some things down the road, but at least I don't feel like I'm forced to just to compete in this game.
In general, I justify my spending on a game so long as it is still spending less money than I would have otherwise spent by going out (I used to have really expensive bar tabs).

I have no problem spending money if the game makes it worthwhile. However, imo this game does an extremely poor job at doing that. I would like a 5th slot and a lancelot but the game doesn't give me a good value for it. Now I'd pay maybe between $10-$20 for it. I'm not paying $40 for it. So I'll grind the game out.
